Chispa somos un programa parte de Maryland League of Conservation Voters. Somos los Latinos y las voces de nuestras familias y comunidades que luchan para proteger el medio ambiente, la salud y nuestro futuro. At the UMD Center for Community Engagement, Environmental Justice, and Health (CEEJH) Conference, the panel titled Immigration, Human Rights, and Environmental Justice brought together experts to discuss critical intersections between these pressing issues. The session, which our Executive Director, Dr. Gabriela Lemus, co-facilitated with Walkiria Pool from Centro de Apoyo Familiar, featured influential speakers such as Olufunmilayo Chinezeki from the National Academy of Medicine, Anika Forrest from the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL), Cemelli de Aztland and Hilda Villegas from La Mujer Obrera, and Andrea Gallegos Montilla from SAMU First Response.
The panel delivered a powerful message on the impact of climate change on migration, stressing the need to integrate environmental justice into immigration policies to protect vulnerable populations. The discussion examined the human rights implications of both general and climate-induced migration, particularly the need for access to basic necessities like food, water, and shelter, while addressing exploitation and abuse risks. Moreover, it highlighted the importance of equitable resource allocation in U.S. communities facing environmental challenges, ensuring that displaced populations and local communities have access to healthcare, education, and housing. This conversation underscored the urgent need for policies that not only respond to immediate crises but also build sustainable, inclusive futures for all.
