Hello 👋! This is our last week of group orders for the first half of 2022! Big thank you all who have supported us this year so far. Our chef/owner Virginia will be returning from Taiwan in approximately 7 weeks or so. Hopefully we will resume group orders again then. During her absence, her younger son Hugo and husband Jack will be in charge of the restaurant. Her elder son Edward will be continuing his career elsewhere.
Funny story for those who care (from Edward's perspective):
Initially we started this group order as an experiment for fun. When the pandemic started, I was just finishing my AA degree from Pasadena CC. My weekly routine included taking a history or theory class sometime during lunch time, then going off to delivering food to the 99 Ranch in Chino Hills. That was our first location. I wasn't getting paid to do May's Cafe work back then (it's a family business afterall). Literally, I just went off to drive and explore different regions in SoCal. After deliveries, I'd go off to different regions and take fun photographs, or fly my little drone around. There were the cows of Chino Hills that I'd pass by every time I go off to our last customer's home. A couple months later, there was the beautiful cliffs, walkways, and beach of the Crystal Cove after Irvine's delivery. Cerritos had lots of ducks for whatever reason, and I swear 210 to Rancho Cucamonga just has the worst traffic ever, the mountains are fun I guess.
There were times when we were still learning that we'd make mistakes and upset a lot of customers. One time, our deliveries turned out to be a whole hour late and I'd spend the next 4 hours delivering to different families. Our freshly made food was probably bad by then, and I'd feel guilty delivering them.
Looking back, I've done a lot of my initial goal of exploring our little SoCal region. Not just the land, but the people as well. Today, our deliveries are almost never late, in fact, they're early for the most parts. My phone automatically knows where I'm off to, and I can recognize the roads and railways of different cities relatively well. I make and post these weekly menus after I finish my Dragonboat practice on Sundays or my morning class on Mondays. It's all very fun and rewarding afterall. Thank you again for making my time enjoyable after all these years.
