I always knew that our first year of opening would be hard, and I thought I was ready, but no amount of foresight would have prepared me for this bittersweet moment.

Last December, after Fei was diagnosed, we had to swallow the very real possibility of permanently closing even though we had barely opened in October. The cancer was so late-stage that without treatment, Fei only had 1-2 months left; with treatment but only a 10% success rate, he had 5-6 months at most. We were at a crossroads: How can we ensure Fei receives the best treatment both in and out of the hospital? How can we operate with our already small team cut in half? Should we close to spend time with him? If we close, how badly would the business suffer?

After much deliberation, we made the decision to reopen: Three nights per week, Fri-Sun. Would people come during such a limited window? Is this too inconvenient, or would people understand? We weren’t sure, but we hoped for the best.

I remember it vividly. The night we reopened (1/5/24), there was a windstorm and it was 48°F outside. To our surprise, people came and waited in the cold. In the next coming weeks, people kept coming despite the weather, despite the lines, despite the wait, despite the strange hours.

Here we are, one year later, still standing, but only because of the community who rallied behind us and the teammates who never gave up on us. I find myself wanting to cry often because Fei isn‘t here anymore. However, when I think of everything we’ve accomplished in just one year, I know Fei would be proud. We are humbled and grateful, we just wish we were happy and together.

To every single person we‘ve had to opportunity to serve, please know that you are a reason why we are able to continue this dream. Thank you for leaving room in your hearts for us, for being so patient, so kind, so understanding, so encouraging during one of the darkest times in our lives. We hope that this is the first of many celebrations we get to have together.

Finally, summer has come to an end, and fall is here. What comes to mind when you think of fall? Pumpkins, of course. But since we’re 626, we’re not going to sell a regular pumpkin soft serve. I’m excited to introduce our Pumpkin Sikhye flavor that our team has worked hard to create.

For starters, some people might not be familiar with sikhye. Sikhye is a traditional Korean drink made from malt and rice. It’s actually one of my favorite drinks. When I was a kid living in Korea, I used to visit my grandmother’s house once a month, and she would always make sikhye just for me because she knew how much I loved it. I can never forget the sweet malt aroma and the slightly tangy ginger smell as she would stir it in a large jar and serve me a big bowl.

Our Pumpkin Sikhye soft serve starts with the earthy sweetness of pumpkin, peaks with the toasty, caramel notes from the malt, and finishes with a hint of cinnamon followed by the tanginess of ginger.

This flavor was crafted with a lot of care and love from our team just in time for fall.

Ube flavor as we know it in modern dessert format has ineffable qualities. Earthy like the namesake tuber, but with a floral aroma reminiscent of vanilla. It felt only appropriate to bolster those notes with the layered complexity of whole vanilla bean, exclusively sourced from . In our collective team experience, we have never met a vanilla supplier with the level of expertise, direct involvement, and genuine passion as the folks at Tahitian Gold. We feel incredibly lucky to be utilizing such beautiful vanilla.

Ube forward, subtle vanilla. Earthy undertones, floral overtones. Familiar, yet new. We hope we pay proper respect in honoring a flavor that holds special memories to so many. In loving celebration of Filipino American History Month, we submit our humble contribution to an iconic flavor: ube vanilla.

We are here for you.

Many people don‘t know this, but we started as ice cream makers in 2020, and we still make ice cream. You may ask, then why are we currently doing soft serve at the shop?

Last year, we first visited Ace Yogurt as customers, where we met the sweetest couple, Jay and Soo. After running their shop for 20+ years, they were looking to retire, invest in their health, and spend more time together. Jay and Soo wanted to sell Ace Yogurt, but they were afraid that the machines they worked so diligently to maintain would be tossed or their shop that had fed several generations would lose its identity.

We decided to buy Ace Yogurt from Jay and Soo, so they could retire sooner and so we could start our ice cream journey. To honor their legacy, our team decided to pivot away from ice cream and learn how to make soft serve. That is how our house-made soft serve came to be. But what about our ice cream?

Over the past few years, we’ve been able to share our ice cream in the form of pints, through special events, and restaurant collaborations. However, we‘re excited to announce that you can now get scoops of our ice cream at BB Superette for a limited time: Sundays from 12pm-closing (or until sold out).

Our menu will be limited in the beginning, however, we plan on expanding our menu and availability of our scooped ice cream once we settle into the space. Thank you to for allowing us to be a part of your beautiful shop!

Albert Chiang x 626: Vinyl & Soft Serve

Join us this Sunday (9/8) for a night of music and dessert, featuring our friend .

Albert Chiang grew up in London and LA during the 1980s, heavily influenced by the early punk rock and hip-hop culture of that era. In the 1990s, he delved deeper into the world of deep house, techno, and acid, thanks to the LA Underground Rave parties.

”There’s a lot of vinyl collectors but not many vinyl places so I just thought it be cool for vinyl people to listen to records and eat ice cream.“

With a vision like that, Albert is truly enriching our community, one vinyl at a time. If you like our shop’s regular tunes, you‘ll be in for a treat this Sunday. Come for the vibes, stay for the people.
