On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor in O'ahu, Hawaii was bombed by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service. During the attack, 19 US Navy ships were damaged or sunk, eight of which were battleships. Total American deaths were 2,403 with an additional 1,178 injured. Of the 2,403 killed, 2,008 were Navy, 218 were army, 109 were Marines and 68 were civilians. Around half of those who died during the Pearl Harbor Attack were aboard the sunken battleship, the USS Arizona, which remains the only battleship from the attack that has never been raised. The day following the attack, the US officially declared war on Japan and entered into WWII.

Today, we remember the thousands of lives lost in the attack and the suffering of all involved in the hope that our commemoration and recognition of this tragedy helps to prevent future attacks of this nature.

Thank you to everyone who has been attending Sunday Supper! We will now be hosting Sunday Supper the second Sunday of every month. At Sunday Supper we will provide local veterans, police officers, and firefighters with a FREE meal and community gathering space. Meals are made featuring the cooking talents of Lockhart BBQ Catering by our very own Nicolas Lockhart and his sister Sarah! This Sunday gathering of music, games, and refreshments starts at 5 PM.
Veterans, police officers, and firefighters may be asked to show valid proof of status to receive a meal.
This is a casual event with meals served while supplies last.
Meals for civilians are offered on a donation basis. Donations are greatly appreciated and help us fund future suppers so we may continue offering this service to our community.

As part of the Art In Service programming series, Cal Poly Humboldt & College of the Redwoods invite you to attend FREE artist talks and demonstrations with visiting Veteran Artists! This series will take place over 3 days during Veterans Day weekend.

Ehren Tool (USMC) will present at Cal Poly Humboldt Ceramics Building on Thursday, November 9th from 11am - 1pm & 2pm- 4pm. Ehren Tool is a ceramic artist and Senior Laboratory Mechanician at the Ceramic Department at University of California, Berkeley, and Marine Veteran of the 1991 Gulf War. Of his work, Tool states, "I would like my work to vindicate the principles of peace and justice in the world. That is a lot to ask of a cup. I hope that some of the cups can be starting points for conversations about unspeakable things."

Jessica Putnam-Phillips will present at College of the Redwoods Creative Arts Complex Rm. 106 on Monday, November 13th from 5:30-8:30pm & Tuesday, November 14th from 8:15am - 2:45pm. Jessica is a ceramic artist, US Air Force Veteran, and educator. She is the founder of ClayShare.com. Of her work, Jessica states, "Using the notion of 'serving' I create objects associated with serving a meal depicting military women serving their country, combining military iconography with traditional elements of transfer-ware patterns."

This event takes place alongside additional events where you can hear more from the artists AND even make your own cups! Those events are: What's Art Got to Do with It: Dinner & Discussion (November 9th from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m at Arcata Veterans Hall), and Veterans Day at McKay Community Connections Fair: Art, BQQ, & Music (November 11th from 11:00-2:00 at Humboldt Cider Garden in Eureka).

I want to thank everyone who showed up to eat, and especially those who volunteered their time, from the Legion, Auxiliary, and Arcata High School's National Honor Society.
