“’Once upon a time’ is the familiar phrase that begins all English folktales. In Arabic, this magical phrase is, ‘Kan ya ma kan, fi adeem ez zaman’ which literally means, ‘There was when there was, in an olden time.’” —Muna Imady
In Kan Ya Ma Kan, late author Muna Imady calls readers into the nearly-lost world of her tete who, like many Syrian grandmothers, used to spin long tales for Muna as a child. In this one-of-a-kind collection of sometimes funny, sometimes dark, always compelling and universal folktales, Muna gives voice to the “patchwork quilt” of Syria. This book is a deeply moving for readers young and old alike.

✨Have you watched the special feature, Weaving Sisterhood, sharing the story of one of the beautiful souls that makes Rabata Cultural Center the thriving community it is?✨
🪡As tapestries are woven by unique individual threads, strengthened and beautified through their overlapping and overlay in design, so too is the human experience through community.
We follow the story of Deeqa, one of the many Somali migrants who found her way to Minnesota with her family and now calls the state home. She shares how she found transformative sisterhood at Rabata Cultural Center that uplifted her, that carried her through challenging times, that prayed beside her, that celebrated her joys, and that honored her heritage.
The Rabata Cultural Center (RCC) offered a space that embraced all the parts and pieces of Deeqa and her family; from her Somali tea to her mother's Kabad weaving, so they too can feel certain they are part and parcel of the very fabric and tapestry of the Minnesotan community.
✨A special thanks to Blue Cross and Blue Shield Minnesota Foundation in helping share this intimate look at the beauty of joyful sisterhood found at Rabata.
