Today, we announced our new Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI), an effort that aims to separate hype from reality in . We’re teaming with federal and state partners to leverage world-class quantum research expertise and testing facilities to provide rigorous scientific and technical evaluation of quantum computing companies’ claims. The goal of QBI is to better predict if quantum computing will grow from a primarily scientific endeavor into a critical industrial tool.
QBI partnerships include new collaborations with the Department of Energy’s Office of Science — a national leader in quantum computing research and high-performance computing — as well as with the State of Illinois, which is investing heavily to create a new quantum computing corridor in the greater Chicago area. To support these collaborations, DARPA will be leveraging Department of Defense experts, in particular, quantum scientists and engineers at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, New York.
A special announcement anticipating a QBI solicitation was released on SAM.gov today. We encourage all companies working on quantum computing – small and large – who think they can prove they are on the path to industrial quantum computing to compete for QBI funding. The Defense Department currently relies on chemical products obtained from petroleum, or petrochemicals, as the source of carbon-containing molecules required for virtually every aspect of DoD operations including food, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and more. Petrochemical manufacturing increasingly depends on vulnerable foreign , and current manufacturing practices cannot readily pivot to make different products, limiting the ability to adapt to market changes or DoD needs.
To address these challenges, DARPA’s Switch program aims to develop reprogrammable systems with unprecedented stability that will provide supply chain resilience and a pathway to continuous . https://ow.ly/yjAr50SyiFC
Using traditional techniques, assessing all critical minerals as directed by the Energy Act of 2020 would proceed too slowly to address present-day supply chain needs.
With the support of ARPA-E and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), we’re making progress on developing AI-enabled methods to accelerate key, time-consuming parts of USGS’ critical mineral assessment workflow.
Critical Mineral Assessments with AI Support (CriticalMAAS) aims to transform the workflow from a serial, predominantly manual, intermittently updated approach, to a highly parallel, continuous AI-assisted capability that is comprehensive in scope, efficient in scale, and generalizable across an array of applications.
