Friday is our Shhhhh, We’re Reading Book Club. Starts at 7, bring your own seating and bring or buy a book.
Saturday is our Boozy Book Fair . From 5-8, at their SLO location, we’ll have fabulous books, beer, music, and pizza.
Drop a comment if you’re planning on coming to either event! And spread the word!
We had some people in browsing and were heading out the door when the above book caught their eye. They looked through it, purchased it, and thanked me for carrying that particular book in our store.
That right there, that moment is why I love books, and what guides my decisions in bringing books into the store.
Stories that need to be told.
People finding themselves or loved ones represented in those stories.
Connecting with people.
Connecting people with books.
We get to play a small part in reflecting back the beauty of our diverse world through our bookshelves.
It’s been quite a week for us: personally, locally, as a country, and globally. Hearing the news, seeing posts, it can get a bit overwhelming. While I advocate for always being an informed individual, when I saw this graphic this morning, I thought that’s exactly why I love books, so sometimes I can take a break and just bury myself in a good story.
So, stop by the shop or load up at the library, take some deep breaths, tune out the noise and turn the pages, this is the perfect weekend for it. What do you all think?
This is a phenomenal New Release Day!! Get ‘em before they’re gone!
Don’t forget, if you know your favorite author has a new book coming out, you can preorder with us to guarantee you have it waiting for you on release day!

Hey everyone, Trick or Treat in the village is a go this year! This event is such a wonderful part of what makes our community so great. But, I wanted to let you all know that the cost to put it on, which is several thousand dollars, falls on the businesses in the village. This year I want to give a huge thank you to Laura Beth and Mindy who are donating proceeds from October Fest to help pay for the majority of it. Please, buy your tickets for Beer and Wine Fest and give them a huge thank you for making this happen.
Also, please consider donating a bag of candy to a business in the village to help with the costs. Or drop some off at the bookstore and we’ll be happy to spread them out to our fellow businesses.
Yesterday someone told me “talking to you just makes me want to burrow into a good book” and I thought that was the best compliment I’ve ever received.
Today, I come into the store and another dear customer turned friend has left me the most precious gifts: a beautifully crocheted EarPod case, and another beautifully crafted keychain that says “reader” with a butterfly!
Sometimes, I stink at the retail side of business, sometimes I fret over payroll, sometimes I get my feelings hurt by reviews, but never in a million years would I have thought opening a bookstore would bring into my life some of the most wonderful friendships, enriching conversations, and all over the shared love of words.
I pride myself on our carefully curated selection of books, puzzles, and sidelines, but I’m humbled by the shared stories created within this community.
Happy Friday!
New Release Tuesday!!!
It’s supposed to be another warm one today. Stop by and grab a book and puzzle, to keep you busy while you stay cool inside. Our shelves are full!
September Newsletter
Here are the children’s new releases!

August was read a book set in your home state. Please share in the comments what you read.
I haven’t finished, but I’m reading General Vallejo. His life spanned California being under Spanish, Mexican, and American control. Interestingly enough, as I was reading it turns out his grandfather is my 7th great-grandfather!
Coming up this month is our Boozy Book Fair , on the 28th!!
And finally, our month ended on a high note, as we are up 25% from last year!
Wyatt is now officially licensed🎉
Aaron and I would like to extend our thanks for supporting Monarch Books as every book you buy now goes to insuring 3 male drivers under the age of 21!
Hi everyone!
We have some temporary hour changes over the next week. Thank you for shopping with us!
We’ve brought in a collection of children’s books about voting. This season is the perfect time to introduce the privilege and importance of voting to your children.
New Release Tuesday!
Last week’s audiobook winner is !
This week’s book/ village business comparison is and Charlottes Web.
Why? Because Krista and her adorable children’s resale shop is like the glue in the village. She’s spun a magical web that has connected us as a community back to this beautiful little piece of Arroyo Grande, with her shop, her balloons, Big Ditch, Halloween, and so much more. Please stop in and visit her if you haven’t been in for a while. It’s “radiant” and “terrific”, so t you agree?
Drop a star in the comments if you’ve been to Hello Village or read Charlotte’s Web for a chance to win a free audiobook from .

I wasn’t paying attention to the calendar, thank you C for reminding me, tomorrow is the 4th Friday of the month, so tomorrow is Shhhhhh, We’re Reading Bookclub.
Doors open at 7:00, silent time starts at 7:15. Bring your own seating, bring or buy a book. Let’s read, silently to our ourselves, together!
Just dropped my second off at college. So proud and excited for his new journey.
It’s been brought to my attention that there should be a separation between our business page and my personal thoughts, but here’s the thing, I’m not the Godfather or Joe Fox, “It’s not personal, it’s business.” I’m Kathleen Kelly “It’s personal to me.”
I share my life with you all because you share your lives with me. Small business, mom and pop shops, are so deeply personal. We opened Monarch Books not just because I love books, but because we knew our community needed a bookstore. A place to find entertainment, distraction, knowledge, wisdom, joy, and each other.
Just in the last week, you all have told me that your husband was ill, that your new niece was born, that your granddaughter who I’ve been mailing books to you for the last few years has come to visit for the first time ever.
I’m here to help you find your next read, but I’m also just here for you. And you all have been here for us. Thank you for doing life in this beautiful community together.
