Katie Bunch was born and raised in Asheboro, NC. She grew up with strong family values and always knew her voice. She eventually became a high school history teacher after graduating from Elon University in 2010; modeling after her Grandmother, Claudine and cousins that are educators, she knew she fit in with teaching.
She began her career in Pamlico County, NC, and eventually made her way back to her alma mater of Asheboro High School. She had a way about her to connect with the students, which led to her students loving her as a result. She taught them not only about history, but life lessons as well.
In August of 2016, Katie was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer. The diagnosis did not stop her. During the beginning of this new phase, after surgery and treatment, she was determined to get back into the classroom that she loved, and be surrounded by her students that she loved. Cancer may have stolen many moments from her, but never stole the love of teaching young minds about the history of our country and world, and about life in general.
December 2017, the battle that Katie fought so hard and strong ended. One of her wishes was that everyone “just be kind.”
The Katie Bunch Servant Leader Scholarship was created by family and friends as a way to keep Katie’s legacy alive. This scholarship awards two outstanding senior students of AHS each year that have shown exceptional leadership throughout the walls of AHS as well as the community of Asheboro.
Katie is my sister. Megan Lawson, who has known Katie from when they were babies, came to me with the idea of an event to celebrate Katie’s life and legacy while raising proceeds to go toward her scholarship. The Katie Bunch Memorial 5k Run/Walk was created in 2019 to do just that.
We welcome you to join us in participating in the 4th annual The Katie Bunch Memorial 5k Run/Walk to celebrate Katie’s life and continue to raise money toward her scholarship.
If you feel led to donate or sponsor our 2022 event, please reach out by email: [email protected] for more information. We are listed as a 501 c(3) and will provide a receipt.
