❓Do you have chronic headaches?❓

If you have a headache that will not go away and you can’t seem to figure out why, it might be related to your neck! 😵

1. Sternocleidomastoid (SCM)
2. Suboccipitals
3. Upper trapezius

🤕June is National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month 😱

🔷Through the month of June, we will discuss different types of headaches, why they occur, and some management strategies.🔷

🚨Not all headaches are the same and there is not a one size fits all treatment for headaches. Every individual’s situation is different and should be managed accordingly!❗️

❓Have you been working at home since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic?🏠

👩‍💻Has this forced you to use a makeshift workspace that is actually just lounging on your couch? 🛋

🤕Spending extended periods of time working from a low table or leaning backward on a couch can lead to neck pain, headaches, and TMJ pain.😱

💪Try using chin tucks and scapular retractions to break up those irritating postures!

🚨
By performing 1-2 of either exercise each time you check your email or social media, you can help get those pesky pains to go away.😃

‼️Remember that these exercises should never hurt. Keep them comfortable!!!

📬Share with a friend that you know has been having trouble with working at their computer due to pain.

❓Did you rest your chin on your hands while you were sitting at your desk in school? Are you still resting your chin on your hand while you are reading this? ❓

😱This position might be comfortable at the moment, but unfortunately it can cause microtrauma and irritation to your TMJ. 🚨

Resting your chin on your hand every once in a while is not going to bother anything. What can become very problematic is when it becomes a habit that you are doing day in and day out. 😵

👍Be mindful of this position in order to avoid irritating your TMJ!🎉

👀Does TMJ disc displacement really matter in the long term? 🤔

Many of those managing TMJ dysfunction have been told that they have an issue with the “disc.” They are told that the disc is the cause for all of their pain, clicking, popping, locking, and inability to chew. ☹️

In the short term, maybe the disc can be blamed for these issues. What about in the long term? ❓❓❓

Probably not. 😳

🔷 Research shows that:

* Retrodiscal tissue may become scar tissue or a “pseudo disc” and may act as the disc typically would

* An ideal position of the disc, as in X-Rays and MRIs showed, is not important for the function of the TMJ

* No correlation between degeneration and symptoms

* No correlation between disc position and pain

🚨At this time it does not appear that long term issues result from TMJ disc displacement. 🚨

❓Do you have a toothache?❓

😱If you have a toothache that cannot be explained by dental issues, it may be because of your jaw! 🤔

😮A few of the muscles of your jaw can refer pain and aching into your teeth. The image shown is of your masseter muscle referring pain into your back teeth.

👀To learn more about your jaw may cause a toothache, read this week’s blog!

🍽Do you avoid chewing on both sides of your mouth?❓

😱The problem with chewing only on one side of your mouth is that it increases stress to your TMJ and the surrounding jaw muscles. We are meant to chew in a grinding motion using both sides of the jaw.

🤨When you chew on only one side of your mouth, you are having to constantly shift your jaw to that one side. This forces your jaw muscles to work repetitively in a single motion, which will result in them becoming overworked. This can lead to increasing muscle tension and pain!

🚨Try chewing on both sides of your mouth for a healthier TMJ!👍

👂If you have an ear ache that is not an infection and you can’t seem to figure out why, it might be related to your neck and jaw! 😵

❓❓Do you find yourself constantly clenching your jaw?❓❓

😬If you are one of the millions of people that hold their tension and stress in their jaw, then try out this simple technique:

👅Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth, just behind your front teeth. Not against your teeth but on the ridge just behind.

😳If you catch yourself clenching your teeth, placing your tongue there will force your teeth to separate and start to relax your jaw muscles. 🤩

❗️Don’t bother trying to hold this all day because it will be hard and tiring! Just try it when you notice clenching.

🚨Feel free to share with anyone you know that clenches their teeth!🚨

⭐️Lateral Excursion Isometric Exercise⭐️

👍This is a great exercise to start improving the strength and stability of your TMJ!

❓Why does stability matter? Well, more stability will likely mean less popping, clicking, and locking of your jaw. Less popping, clicking, and locking will make it easier to eat and chew!🎉

🍔So if you are noticing any trouble eating, talking, or yawning because of your TMJ, then try out the lateral excursion isometric exercise.

🚙It’s easy enough that you can do it while you are driving! Try doing 5 or 6 at a time. Hold each one for about 5 seconds.

📬Share with a friend that you know has been having trouble with their TMJ.

‼️Remember that this exercise should never hurt. Keep it comfortable!!!

⭐️Scapular Retraction Exercise⭐️

❓Are you able to squeeze your shoulder blades back together? Many people have trouble with this movement and instead shrug their shoulders when trying to pinch their shoulder blades back. 🤷‍♀️

🤕Without good control of the muscles around your shoulder blades, excessive stress is placed through your neck and jaw.

👍This exercise is a very manageable way to start reducing this stress!

🚨You should feel this working between your shoulder blades in your mid back, not the top of your shoulders.

❗️Try to make a habit of doing this exercise throughout the day. Do 1-2 every time you hit a red light or each time you check your Instagram.

📬Share with a friend that you know has been having neck pain, headaches, or jaw pain.

‼️Remember that this exercise should never hurt. Keep it comfortable!!!
