The Beaucatcher Tunnel in Asheville, North Carolina, is a significant landmark that reflects the city's growth and development over the past century. This tunnel, which cuts 750 feet through Beaucatcher Mountain, has an intriguing history marked by ambitious engineering, urban expansion, and a bit of local folklore.

The idea for a tunnel through Beaucatcher Mountain dates back to the early 20th century. As Asheville began to grow, the city's leaders recognized the need for better transportation routes to accommodate the increasing population and the booming tourist industry. Beaucatcher Mountain presented a geographical barrier between the downtown area and the eastern parts of the city, necessitating an innovative solution.

The construction of the Beaucatcher Tunnel began in 1927. It was an ambitious project for its time, involving extensive planning and significant labor. The tunnel was designed to facilitate easier and faster travel, promoting connectivity within the city and boosting local commerce.

However, the construction process was fraught with challenges. The workers had to contend with the difficult terrain of Beaucatcher Mountain, which required careful excavation and reinforcement to ensure the tunnel's stability. The tunnel suffered a partial collapse in 1928 and soon became politically unpopular due to time and expense. It became a point of contention for the elections of 1928. Despite these challenges, the project pressed forward, driven by the city's need for improved infrastructure.

The Beaucatcher Tunnel was officially opened on September 1, 1929. It is estimated that a little over 7,000 vehicles passed through that first day. Its completion marked a significant milestone in Asheville's development, providing a vital link between different parts of the city. The tunnel allowed for smoother and more efficient transportation, contributing to the economic growth of the region. Less than two months after the tunnel opened, Black Tuesday hit the stock market on October 24th, ushering in the Great Depression.

The tunnel quickly became an integral part of Asheville's road network, easing traffic congestion and facilitating the movement of goods and people. It also enhanced the accessibility of the city’s attractions, making Asheville a more attractive destination for tourists.

Over the years, the Beaucatcher Tunnel has undergone several renovations to maintain its safety and functionality. These improvements have included structural reinforcements, modern lighting, and ventilation systems to ensure the tunnel meets contemporary safety standards.

Today, the Beaucatcher Tunnel remains a crucial part of Asheville's transportation infrastructure. It continues to serve as a testament to the city’s ability to overcome natural barriers and adapt to the needs of its growing population.

The Beaucatcher Tunnel also holds a place in local folklore. There are various stories and legends associated with the tunnel, adding a layer of mystique to its history. Some locals believe the tunnel is haunted, with tales of ghostly apparitions and unexplained noises adding to its allure.

Arguably the best part about staying at a B&B… the 2nd B!! Each stay includes a homemade 2-course breakfast to start your day right. 🧇🍳

This starter features our cake with strawberries and house cream. The second image shows scrambled eggs with roasted potatoes and a side salad. We love a perfect balance of sweet and savory. 😋😋

The Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina was the brainchild of Edwin Wiley Grove. Grove made his fortune in pharmaceuticals, primarily selling a product called Grove's Chill Tonic (a syrup elixir that outsold Coca-Cola at one time). Construction on the inn began in 1912 and took almost exactly a year to complete. Built of granite stones, the inn has a one-of-a-kind appearance and atmosphere. The history runs deep with famous visitors including 10 Presidents. F. Scott Fitzgerald stayed there for two years while his wife was in an insane asylum. There are displays celebrating Fitzgerald and other famous guests - one dedicated to Harry Houdini caught my eye.

I had a personally embarrassing incident there that I’d like to forget. I ate at the restaurant and forgot (I know some of you are thinking “forgot” with quotations) to pay my bill. It was about $175 and I just strolled off into the hotel lobby. I was walking around and all of a sudden I saw my server sprinting past in a dead run. It dawned on me that she was looking for me. I chased her down and settled the bill. Her hands were shaking in worry, I’m not sure what they would have done to her but I’m glad I backed up and did the right thing. Those were some expensive quail eggs.

How about those fireplaces? This place is an amazing stop in Asheville.

One the most Appalachian meals ever! I know it’s common around the South, but salmon cakes (patties), soup beans, and cornbread has a special place in our Appalachian hearts! This was a regular when I was growing up, showing up at least once a month. The government subsidized salmon during the depression because a diet deficient in meat, eggs and milk and high in corn meal led to niacin deficiency, causing the disease pellegra, which swept the poor people of the south living off cornbread and beans. A single can of salmon and a single egg mixed with flour or cornmeal made enough salmon cakes to feed a family and enough protein to unlock the niacin in the cornmeal, halting the disease. This meal, in particular, I consider a part of my food heritage and is one of my all-time favorites!
