A pub for the heart and mind

Tuesdays. “The Inflation Exhaustion Special”. One burger (“the plain cheese!”). One small pour draft (or soda if you’d rather). Seven dollars.

When the market sank in 2008, we ran a depression era special of $1 dollar diner burgers. It was just a public service. Now I know what you’re thinking, and we didn’t make as many millions off that deal as you’d think! Those Monday nights, people ordered 10 at a time (gluttons!), but it was worth doing to keep folks going. It was fun in a weird way. Full of folks stuffing happy faces with piles of diner burgers in the middle of a financial crises. Silly but worth while.

And now, these many years later, folks are feeling it again. All the hoping that prices will shrink to the vicinity of manageable just hasn’t been working. So we are making this small special to suggest that just like y’all are feeling it, restaurants are feeling it. Bars are feeling it. And we are exhausted by it. It’s just a burger and a beer. It’s not going to change the world or your place in it. But maybe it’ll just let you have a meal at a 2013 price or so?

Tuesdays only, unless you make it so damn popular that it’s all we can afford to offer. Plain cheese burger. Small draft (or doctor pepper for crying out loud!). Seven dollars.

Ahhhhhhhh

It’s been an eternity since this street was anywhere close to this tidy. Foot traffic?! Unbelievable. I know it will start all over on Monday, but we are going to enjoy this brief break from the endless beeping and pounding and dusting and grinding and hollering and the rest of it. Time for a patio sit on our wonderful corner!

The sound of hammers and perfume of saw dust. 1989. Some things you can’t put in words. This room. Snapshot. Flashes of life. Small kids collecting bottle caps, corks and quarters. Phone call. Walk to peppinos. Wander the streets of downtown. Different time. After game, globe. After school, globe. Meet friend, globe. Daytime, no crowd, quiet, nap time, rocking chair, easy. Parents working. Putting you to work. Paint this, dust that, figure out a way to cover this. Move away. Come home. Things that need doing. Now you’re able. Little older. Constant change to make it seem like it’s all still the same. It’s the same to you. You can still feel the sting of the splinter in your leg from the beam near the bar (it was a foot if it was an inch! It wasn’t an inch). Can still smell the ci******es that clouded the ceiling (no smoking inside folks!). Can still recall the taste of oranjeboom when you were too young to appreciate just how delightful it really was (call the cops!). We met here. We smiled and laughed and stormed out in a huff and drank deeply and made up and never danced and won’t and poured glasses of whiskey and ate meals of all sorts and learned enough chess to teach each other and read poems but only in funny voices and played music and told secrets and couldn’t keep our damn mouths shut and fought a bit but they were mild disputes and for the best and we had each others backs when the brutes were out and we never grew old but it was so nice to see you hadn’t fallen victim to the trends of the day and that one wrinkle makes you all the more charming and we talked about this room and what it was and is and where it’s headed and we couldnt find the right words to say but we said goodbye knowing hello wasn’t far away. Wednesday. Globe. 1989-2024+.

Open today. Streets are quiet. A few folks with a day off wandering. Weathers fine. Half off wine doesn’t sound too bad. Take a bottle for that mid day party you’re throwing yourself. Hot curry fried chicken sandwich never hurt anyone. Take one with fries cause who the hell says you can’t? Labor Day. Sunlit porch. Relaxed Athens. There’re worse things in life.

The end of summer. A couple months ago you were 22. You felt grown up. You discovered the lunch counter at add drug. You told your friends. Very impressed. You hunted for the flavors that you tasted on your trip to Budapest (click here for goulash recipe. Don’t actually click. Nothing to click). You drank Athens dry of spritzes on patios and beers in shadowy rooms. You were determined to try scotch and damn it you were gonna like it. You went to waston mill in the highest of heat. You swam in the broad river though you questioned its name. You found a cali n Tito’s bike in the bushes. You returned it. You started a band. You got a job. You stumbled into a situation that gave you the opportunity to learn that the fellow you and your friends were sure was a demented killer was actually a pretty nice person (drat!). You began getting morning pastries. You started getting a morning belly. You got fewer morning pastries. You become a regular at the globe (why didn’t you go there before? Shameless, wretched, cheap promotion). You met someone new. You fell a pretty great distance. Yall had big ideas. It was a special moment. They moved away. You grew a bit more. And you couldn’t realize it then, but you’d begin to think of them each summer when the heat hit you just so. The summer began to end. And as you looked back at it, you see the years that it gave to you. The years are written on your face now. In your gray hairs. But you’re just the same to us. Always will be. One summer, twenty years or so. What a pleasant season in Athens. Here’s to the coming fall!

Justin Timberlake and Amy Adams filming here years ago. The Globe has always loved cinema. “What’s your favorite film?” is one of our most frequently asked interview questions because the answer can extract so much of a person’s hidden character. August 15-17 we are getting to host a couple of slots for and it’s going to be fun as can be. Look them up. Pal around with the organizers. Make your own flicks for them for next year. They are putting a ton of effort into making this happen, and, as we’ve known several of them for years, we are proud of their efforts and sacrifices. Why shouldn’t Athens have an annual film festival? Doesn’t everyone love sitting in a darkened, cool room in the middle of summers heat to forget the day, forget the news, forget where you are, take in a story, erupt with a laugh, laugh at those weeping, weep yourself, eat some popcorn, get popcorn stuck in your back tooth, become ridiculously annoyed at stupid popcorn, ask for a tooth pick but all they give you is a straw and then you have to bend the straw just so, and still no relief, and then it’s tomorrow and all of a sudden the kernel shell releases it’s cement grasp from your molar, and you can comfortably go back to the movies and do it again. Here’s to

Sundays!

A quiet menu adjustment is actually an incredibly loud and chaotic affair. Our kitchen stretches itself to the point of ripping to pieces, and then manages to make that discomfort feel normal and relaxed. It’s superhuman. It’s scary to watch. Beauty in motion. Proud of our coworkers for moving mountains. Here we are. New things. Such is life.

Meatloaf day is everyday. Mashed potatoes and a rotating southern casserole as accompaniment.
Red beans and rice is the comfort meal of my dreams. I’ll have a plate once or twice a day thank you.
Shepherds pie with lamb? Well we had to because it’s just good. Really good. And we want you to taste how good.
Dessert. It might seem heavy, but it’s light as can be. A little nod to the soon to be forgotten frosted orange? Maybe.

Come try something new or old. Hopefully it can make your day. We want to make your day. Strange. We might not even know you, but seeing you smile with a beer in your hand or a plate set before you is immensely satisfying. Addiction. We are addicted. To you. Sick? Perhaps. And it might not always show. But it’s true. Anyway, come along, folks. Let’s get going.

From this point to our front door is the world record long jump. The tape measure on the floor shows 29 feet 4 1/4 inches. Twenty nine feet. Twenty nine. Well the Olympics start next Wednesday with several events before the opening ceremonies. We will try to show as much of the track and field, women’s soccer, gymnastics, and swimming events as we are able. If you happen to come in with a group of 60 archery fanatics, we can surely make your viewing dreams a reality. However, track and field will live at the top of our sporting priorities list while the games are ongoing. We will try to show events live, and most of those will take place during lunch and afternoon hours. Thank you all for making this a fun summer! Let’s keep it going…TWENTY NINE DAMN FEET!!!!!!!

07/15/2024

Our early bird special starts today. Each day it’ll run until 12:30 pm. Two pressed cinnamon rolls (fried), fried chicken tossed in curry ghee, bacon, swiss cheese, and orange zest frosting. Much too good for children. Should be eaten ferociously. With gusto in a dark corner, alone, and probably with a gym towel around your neck. Dangerous cuisine.

Goal.

07/14/2024

Before. So, today we have lots to do…
3pm: Spain vs England in the Euro 2024 Final.
5-7pm: the Irish session players.
8pm: Argentina vs Colombia in the Copa America Final. 10:15pm: “Off the Clock” stand up comedy night.

Just enough to exhaust you by closing time at midnight!

07/11/2024

Those classic days. Happy hour starts at 3 now and runs til 6. What a thing.

07/10/2024

Today:
3pm: England vs Netherlands.
8pm: Uruguay vs Colombia.
Plethora of enjoyable foods, drinks, and matches. What is a plethora? I just would like to know if you know what a plethora is. I would not like to think that a person would tell someone he has a plethora, and then find out that that person has no idea what it means to have a plethora.

I dont know why i like this weather. It should be miserable. It brings the perfume of high heat. Gasoline and asphalt. Hot leather and tar. Bbq on the summer wind. It’s not a breeze. There’s no relief. The wind makes it hotter. You think you can smell the ocean, but you’re just experiencing heat stroke. Pink elephants galore. Steering wheel burns your hands. The sidewalks cook your feet. The shade is for bugs. And the bugs figured out that you’re the best tasting. Hop in the river. Jump in the pool. Dry off. Go to globe. It’s either Monday or Saturday. Quick beer quick bite quick football match. The Colombians get it. Great crowd. Good fun. New friend. Different language. Similar interests. Back on the streets. Downtown busier than you thought she’d be. Cigarette smoke. Shalimar. Youd kill for a 25 cent ice cream from hodgsons. But itd melt in 25 seconds. Things are happening though. There’s a show. Music. Puppetry. Stand up horror routine. Late night Athens talk show (with your host…). There’s a boutique with that one thing you’ve wanted but never had. There’s cocktail contests. Theres Olympics to cheer. There’s beer week (wha?!). There’s pop ups. There’s summer storms for watching through screen doors. There’s book clubs. There’s a film festival (go Chuck, Sam and crew!). Onwards. Cross the street. Merry way. Athens. Summer. In heat.

07/03/2024

4th of July. We will open at 4. Summer holiday type deal. Hot dog menu sorta thing. Potato salad, slaw, chili sort of affair. Draft beer on a hot night situation. Copa quarterfinals. Yep. Bring a friend. Be friendly. Eat well. Drink mightily. Sleep heavenly. Alls well.

(Pleeeeease! Bring fireworks back downtown on the 4th of July. Not the closest Saturday. Not to a park to try to manage traffic. Don’t overthink it. Just be normal. If the rest of the country can do it, surely…surely….we can manage.)

07/01/2024

We are open this week. Like it or not.

06/16/2024

Happy Father’s Day! Celebrate and be merry. Laugh and be funny. Tell the stories we’ve heard and haven’t. Overdo it. Let us in on the fib that you told us when we were small that sorted it all out. Explain to us again why ice cream is actually pretty good for us and why it’s the one requirement on the nightly menu. Recount the sacrifices. The long drives. The early hours before the sun has started to think about coming up. Those life defining split seconds. Chance encounters and curious introductions. Odd premonitions. The things that changed your world. The world beyond yours. All that. Just make it a good day ok? Come here. Take a load off. Have a beer and a diner burger. Watch England at 3. See comedy after dinner. All good.
