I went down the rabbit hole this morning searching for Happy Traum footage, wanting to remember everything I could because his impact on us was too big to describe. I found this gem, and the first thing I thought of was what heaven must be like when all of the musicians meet up and remember how good the music was and is wherever they are. We lost Rick back in '99, and often, we laugh and smile, remembering our friendship and his music. This made Jorma and I weep but left our hearts full, believing that two old friends were playing on the other side.

Margareta Kaukonen was born in 1943 in Lund, Sweden. At 16, she was a layout editor for a young adult magazine called Fick Journal. She met Jorma Kaukonen on a ship traveling from Helsinki to St Petersburg (then Leningrad).

She came to Santa Clara to be with Jorma. They married in 1964. They divorced in 1987. She was a self-taught stand-alone artist in a pre-psychedelic era when art and music were poised to explode. Margareta lived most of her life as an active substance abuser and died of renal failure in a hotel room in San Francisco, California...alone. Before she died, she gifted Vanessa Kaukonen with her entire collection of primarily unseen art and poetry. Vanessa has shown her work in several gallery spaces since the 2000s, donating proceeds to facilities that deal with alcohol and substance treatment in teens.

We have chosen several pieces for this exhibit. However, there are hundreds of unframed paintings, Rapidograph pen and ink drawings, and poetry that can be viewed privately by contacting the gallery. This exhibit can be viewed in person at the gallery during open hours. Pieces can be purchased directly from the Gallery page at The River of Time Boutique. All pieces will be professionally shipped and insured.

It is never easy to lose a friend. Uncle W***y was everyone's friend. He owned Uncle W***y's Bar in Kingston, NY (among several haunts), and he promoted Jorma probably 100 times. The best were the Jorma and Rick Danko shows. His bar was intimate, the musicians always played their best there, and more often than not, those nights lasted until sunrise. Uncle W***y's Bar remains legendary. But he wasn't just a local promoter; he was a neighbor, a brother, and an official member of our road crew. He loved his Tuna tour jacket that we made for him back in the 90s and wore it until the last time Jorma saw him in September on the last electric run.

He helped us move to Ohio in 1990. That was quite the trip—all of us and a caravan of moving trucks—kind of like the Beverly Hillbillies.

Uncle W***y was most notably a diehard baseball fan and was always in his crown and cape as the unofficial mascot of the New York Yankees. W***y was as old school as you can get. His spirit will live on in the crazy memories we all share, having been in his life. Fair Winds brother.....

Hello, everyone...most of you have seen our announcement on our website, but I will post it again here so you can read it straight from the owner's mouth.

Announcement: The Fur Peace Ranch

In 1989, we envisioned creating a place where students could come to learn guitar from Jorma. Little did we know how this idea would evolve. What started as a physical place has become a state of being—a mindset and a sense of belonging for everyone involved, including us.

In the early days of Fur Peace, we often referenced the movie “Field of Dreams.” Much like in the film, we have had one constant throughout the years: music. Despite the world’s changes, music has always been there, marking the passage of time. It’s the feelings that touch you and the memories you recall as you immerse yourself in this music camp in the hills of southeast Ohio. Our students and guests, both young and old, found themselves grinning from ear to ear as they stepped onto this magical land in Darwin, Ohio. That’s the essence of Fur Peace Ranch.

Over the years, we have welcomed thousands of onsite and offsite students in locations like Maui, Desert Hot Springs, and Upstate New York. We have hosted and promoted hundreds of shows, celebrated local artists with annual art festivals, and provided a unique location for countless organizations’ functions. None of this would have been possible without the key staff members who have been with us from the beginning and our current employees, whom we call the Fur Peace family.

Post-COVID, we adjusted our programming boundaries. Our classes transitioned to a permanent virtual format, opening opportunities to venture out to other locations nationwide. San Diego, Martha’s Vineyard, and Sanibel are just a few new places where we’ve hosted guitar workshops. The future of Fur Peace Ranch workshops will carry the same magic created at our original flagship location.

Looking ahead, the Fur Peace organization will become Fur Peace Productions, based in Athens County, Ohio. We will continue our “On The Road Workshops” and promote music events. Fur Peace Management will continue to represent Jorma and Hot Tuna, with the possibility of expanding our roster of artists.

On a personal note, we are excited to announce that the property’s new owner, is launching a new venture called the Lavender Ranch. Lavender Ranch’s mission is to enrich lives through personalized retreats, educational workshops, and community-focused events, all rooted in sustainability and the arts. Passing the property to the new owner, who will continue with their vision, and seeing our daughter embark on her college journey marks a significant paradigm shift in our lives. We are ready for it. The universe has guided us to where we stand now, and we embrace the exciting prospects ahead.
