An interesting new read from The Washington Post takes a deeper dive, 'Is it Alzheimer’s? Families want to know, and blood tests may offer answers.'

'Simple blood tests for Alzheimer’s disease, long coveted by doctors and researchers, have hit the market, representing a potentially powerful tool to help diagnose the devastating memory-robbing illness, which afflicts 6.5 million Americans. The tests detect tiny amounts of abnormal proteins in the blood, including a sticky version called amyloid beta, to determine whether the pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer’s are present in the brain.'

The experimental drug lecanemab shows “potential” as an Alzheimer’s disease treatment and works by binding to amyloid beta, a hallmark of the degenerative brain disorder.

Positive preliminary results of lecanemab show it slowed cognitive and functional decline by 27 percent in Biogen and Eisai’s Phase 3 trial.

Says Dr. Richard Isaacson, adjunct associate professor of neurology at Weill Cornell Medicine, “This trial proves that Alzheimer’s disease can be treated,” he said. “I hope we will start to see a reversal in the chronic underfunding of dementia research. I look forward to a future where we treat this and other neurodegenerative diseases with a battery of medications adapted to the individual needs of our patients.” CNN Health, November 30, 2022.

The NIA recently released a new video on biomarkers, explaining how they help to diagnose dementia.

What's a biomarker? Biomarkers are measurable indicators of what’s happening in your body. They can be found in blood, other body fluids, organs and tissues and can be used to track healthy processes, disease progression or even responses to a medication.

Blood-based biomarker tests are becoming more broadly available to aid in screening people for Alzheimer's and related dementias years before symptoms begin. Early diagnosis is important for early treatment!

These incredible leaders formed the non-profit, Daughters Against Alzheimer’s, and launched their signature event, Battle for the Brain – a lip sync competition, in the fall of 2017.

With a goal of raising $10 Million for research toward AD by the year 2025, we are on track to succeed all while creating an opportunity to have some fun, help remove the stigma often associated with AD, and create an unprecedented awareness of the reality our society faces in the years to come.

We are confident that this awareness will help bring the funds necessary to find prevention and effective treatment for millions of people. Together, we will all make a difference.
