The holiday began at the 1925 World Conference for the Well-Being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland. After the conference, governments around the world established the Children’s Day celebration to highlight children’s issues and promote children’s rights around the globe.

This year we are honoring our children at the Our Lady of Armenia Centers in Gyumri and Tashir. The Centers support the most vulnerable children between the ages of 6 and 18 and are operated by the Armenian Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, a religious order of nuns established in 1847.

We remain steadfast in providing optimal care, love, and support to the most vulnerable Armenian populations around the world.

SOAR has responded IMMEDIATELY, bringing dry food packages, hot meals, hygiene supplies, diapers, first aid supplies, and folding beds to displaced families from Artsakh!

*** EVACUATION OF ARTSAKH ***
The evacuation of Artsakh has begun, with more than 100,000 Armenians forced to relocate within the past 48 hours. Of these refugees, many are children. SOAR is steadfastly committed to perpetuating our work in child protection through three primary mechanisms:

1. Assisting with the relocation of children from the Artsakh Boarding School. When the Azeri attack into Artsakh began, the School found shelter on a Russian military base. They are now on their way to Armenia and will be housed at a partnering residential childcare institution. Our intent is to support these children with food, clothing, personal necessities, and educational expenses.

2. SOAR established the Artsakh Family Restoration Fund (AFRF) in November 2021 to assure that no children in Artsakh would ever have to be institutionalized because of the casualties of war. To those Artsakh families forced to relocate to Armenia, SOAR provides emotional and financial support to assure cultural preservation and economic self-sufficiency.

3. SOAR established the Families of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund (FFSRF) in 2020 to assist the families of fallen and severely disabled Armenian service personnel by providing emotional, educational, and financial support and children’s enrichment assistance. The Fund aims to build strong, caring, and loving bonds with each family and to follow the widows and children through the years to assure that no children of fallen Armenian soldiers are ever institutionalized. To date, SOAR has supported more than 300 fallen soldier families with food support, housing assistance, educational expenses, psychological/grief counseling, and vocational training.

Update on Six-year-old Angelina Petrosian from Russia - Surgery Scheduled for November!

Angelina suffered brain hypoxia during childbirth and cannot walk on her own. She has been learning to walk through rehabilitation, but the spasticity in her legs has not resolved.

The ONLY intervention that will allow Angelina to walk independently is selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) surgery at St. Louis Children's Hospital in the United States.

In August, SOAR launched an emergency appeal with a goal of $28,000 to help her family afford the surgery. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our supporters, we exceeded our goal in less than 48 hours!

Angelina's surgery is now scheduled for November 2nd at St. Louis Children's Hospital. All accommodations for the family have been arranged. We will keep you updated on Angelina's progress.

SOAR is dedicating the month of September to our fallen and severely wounded soldiers and POWs. We believe that the service and sacrifices made by our Armenian service personnel should never be taken for granted.

Just as they have become our heroes, we help their families get past their obstacles and guide them through their darkest times. Our goal is to ensure that no children of fallen Armenian soldiers are ever institutionalized.
