**IT’S TIME TO RETHINK THE MÂCONNAIS**

If, like me, you’ve always associated great white Burgundy with the Côte de Beaune, I’ve found a delightful surprise from the southern end of Burgundy that will challenge your expectations and leave you wanting more.

In Pouilly-Vinzelles, the Bret brothers work with a high level of rigor and ambition. Since the passing of their brother Marc-Antoine, Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret have dedicated themselves to their estate, purchased in 1947 by their grandfather.

Though they grew up in the Paris region, their roots are in Burgundy. Their mission: to reveal the uniqueness of Vinzelles terroirs, overshadowed by the neighboring Pouilly-Fuissé. They produce full-bodied, saline wines from biodynamically farmed terroirs.

Starting with the 2000 vintage, the brothers converted to biodynamics, achieving Demeter certification in 2006. They continuously experiment in the vineyard and cellar to enhance their terroirs, bottling wines with little to no added sulfur.

🍷✨ **Do you love Chablis? Do you love great deals? Then you must love great deals on Chablis!** ✨🍷

This week, I have a fantastic Chablis Premier Cru from the esteemed climat « Montée de Tonnerre. » The name references the old Roman road that climbs up the hill towards my hometown of Tonnerre. While I might be biased towards this area, Montée de Tonnerre is widely regarded as one of the best Premier Crusites within Chablis! Situated just southeast of the climats of Chablis Grand Cru, it stares directly at Blanchot.

The wines from Montée de Tonnerre are mineral-driven and show great finesse and elegance - embodying everything I want in a classic Chablis!

🍏 **My Impression:**
- **Color:** Medium straw with slight green tinges.
- **Nose:** Fresh jasmine, green and yellow apple, lemon peel, oyster shell, and a hint of white button mushroom.
- **Palate:** Tart green apple, fresh citrus, and intense chalky mineral notes. High, mouthwatering acidity balanced by a creamy, almost fluffy texture from aging on fine lees. Finishes clean with fresh salinity, bright white stone, small white flowers, and subtle spice from the oak.

This wine is outstanding and a steal at this price point! Pleasantly balanced and approachable in its youth, it also shows incredible aging potential.

🍇 **Winemaking:** Vinification and aging on fine lees in oak for 12 months. Blending in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks followed by 4-5 months of additional aging. Bottled after very light filtration.

In the Southwest of France, the appellation of Cahors is one of the most well-known.
However, in the grand scheme of things, this appellation remains virtually unknown to most wine-lovers. They are known for wines based on the Malbec grape, which may lead you to ask, « Malbec? Isn’t that an Argentinian grape? » While Argentina has become famous for their Malbec, the grape originated in France! The ‘Black Wine of Cahors,’ as it was affectionately called by the ancient Romans, is a much different expression of this classic variety.
There are two sides to the appellation of Cahors: the alluvial valley of the Lot river and the plateaux, Causses as they are called locally. The latter is where you will find Cahors’ most captivating wines. There, the bedrock is Kimmeridgian with a top soil of clay, and there is another type of terroir, siderolithic, which is very iron-rich. With top-notch viticulture, much lighter extraction, and lower to no sulfur, the hard tannins that once made this appellation infamous are gone. A fog has lifted; behind it is an entirely different edge, this one magnificent: the minerality, acidity, and majestically punk rock energy of Kimmeridgian bedrock (famous for its presence in Chablis).
These new Cahors, especially Maya’s and Nicolas’ at Calmette, are softly and beautifully infused reds with the spine of powerfully mineral white wines. They are contemporary, energetic, saline, stony, and vibrant. They are VERY exciting - these are Grands Vins.

SPOTLIGHT PRODUCER:
Pascal Clément-Burgundy
Pascal Clément was born in the village of Savigny-les-Beaune to a family of growers, where his grandfather founded the Maison. Being the younger son with a significant age gap (20 years) from his older brother and not aligning on the philosophy of his family’s Domaine, Pascal decided to go on his own. He spent about two decades as a grower and winemaker in the region for various Domaines - including his time at legendary Domaine Coche-Dury in Meursault and Domaine Chanson. In 2011 he launched his own micro-négoçiant project. - « garage wine » as he told me over our conversation, and in 2012 produced his first wine.
The wines live in a stunning building built in 1850 with a splendid arched cellar, housing 300 barrels (456 L barrels, unique to this region). Pascal works very closely with fifteen farmers/vineyard owners with vineyard holdings across Burgundy, personally selecting and tending the plots he chooses to work with. This relationship allows him to focus on making extraordinary and expressive wines.

Winemaker Highlight!
François Villard - Northern Rhone

A decade ago, I was introduced to François Villard’s wines - my immediate impression was FRESHNESS AND BALANCE!  I brought all I could to our shelves and it was an immediate hit, everyone who tasted his wines (at all levels) was immediately hooked!  Then COVID hit and his wines were not as readily available as they once were, leaving a void in our shelves for his uniqueness and elegance and of course value.  Last year, on a personal trip through France, I was able to discover yet again his winemaking magic on a very short visit to his winery - I tasted through new vintages (not bottles yet as you can see below) and became again enamored with his wines.  Fast forward to last week and I had a chance to finally meet this outstanding winemaker at a trade lunch.  His wines really speak his intention and soul - to farm in the most respectful way, to pick the best grapes at every level and to produce wines with freshness, elegance and ready to be enjoyed!
 
Please enjoy these wines as much I have and do, they are a true Gem in the Northern Rhone Valley - of course, as with many of my favorites, quantities are limited!

Virginie (Mimi) Moreau is proving more than equal to the task of taking over from her husband Stéphane. Stéphane, who was influenced by Vincent Dauvissat (who recommended him to us many years ago, and who remains an influence here) was a vigneron whose star burned very brightly, and the domaine continues along the lines he set, working organically, hand-picking, aiming for optimum maturity while avoiding any botrytis influence.

A LUCIAN WINE DINNER WITH GRAHAM TATOMER

On Wednesday, April 24th, please join us at LUCIAN BOOKS AND WINE  as we host Graham Tatomer of Tatomer Wines in the Central Coast of California. Directly influenced by the powerful and dynamic wines of Wachau, Austria, Graham focuses on producing equally inspired wines in Santa Barbara County.

Seeking total immersion, Graham spent 4 years in Wachau, learning from the iconic Austrian winemaker, Emmerich Knoll. With this invaluable experience and a deep understanding of Riesling and Gruner Veltliner, he returned to the States to launch his eponymous winery in 2008. In addition to his white wines, Graham has expanded his production to include several wonderful red wines made from Pinot Noir. 

We have worked with Tatomer wines since they initially arrived in the Georgia market in 2019 and are excited to welcome Graham on his first trip to Atlanta.
