Policy Advocacy Reentry Nonprofit For Justice-Impacted Women Of Color In The South & Beyond.

07/10/2024

l’m honored to be appointed to the Women’s Justice Commission, a national, nonpartisan panel led by former U.S. Atty. Gen. Loretta Lynch and featuring 15 other leaders plus Senior Adviser Sarah Stitt. Overcoming the lived experience of being justice impacted, l’ve dedicated my pain to the purpose of providing dignity, safety, and equity to women involved with the criminal legal system. As stated by Lynch: “We can and must do better to reduce the flow of women into the justice system, help them maintain relationships with children and families during incarceration, and provide the support they need to thrive after release.”

Criminal justice policy and practice often fail to sufficiently address women’s needs or account for the different ways women experience justice system involvement. RestoreHER is proud to have Founder, Pamela Winn appointed to the Women’s Justice
Commission, which will recommend improvements 🧩🧩🧩

The Women’s CARE Act defers a woman’s sentence until a minimum of 12 weeks postpartum allowing the mother an opportunity for perinatal care, resources, proper nutrition, and education before serving her sentence. Also for the baby to receive imperative bonding, breastfeeding, and proper placement which are all essential to its development. The United States is experiencing a maternal-infant mortality crisis that excludes this population of women due to a lack of data. There are 41 States that have passed laws that ban abortion. We are a nation that “says” we care for mothers and babies, let’s show it in our actions to pass the Women’s CARE Act. ALL Mothers and Babies Lives Matter!🧩 Happy Mother’s Day💐

🗣️DEMANDS that incarcerated women that have experienced sexual abuse be RELEASED IMMEDIATELY!!!!! Not allowing them to continuously be harmed by transferring them to another prison. These women were not sentenced to be harmed physically, mentally, and/or emotionally. While they are being accountable, they are now also “victims” of criminal behavior from officers that have taken an oath to protect them as they serve their time and these women should be given FREEDOM & JUSTICE!

The Federal Correctional Institution stands in Dublin, Calif., Dec. 5, 2022. The federal Bureau of Prisons says it is planning to close a women’s prison in California known as the “rape club” despite attempts to reform the troubled facility after an Associated Press investigation exposed rampant staff-on-inmate sexual abuse.

“”The announcement of Dublin’s closure represents an extraordinary acknowledgement by the Bureau of Prisons that its much-promised efforts to improve the culture and environment there have not worked. Many attempts to stem the problems at Dublin have come after the AP investigation revealed a pattern of abuse and mismanagement that crossed years, even decades.””

CATALYST GRANT PROGRAM INSIGHTS:
Researching the Criminalization of Pregnancy: Data Barriers and Accountability

With support from the Catalyst Grant Program, RestoreHER, a Georgia-based policy advocacy reentry organization, initially planned to assess the criminalization of behavior during pregnancy in one county in Georgia, with the idea that these data might be indicative of national trends and might have implications for constitutionally protected pregnancy outcomes across the United States. RestoreHER researchers planned to evaluate the rates of prosecution of pregnant people and the prosecution of people for pregnancy-related charges. Pregnancy-related charges were defined as charges that are brought forth because a person is pregnant that would not have been filed otherwise, such as the charge of child abuse for using drugs while pregnant. RestoreHER researchers also planned to compare the cases prosecutors pursued with the corresponding charges from law enforcement within a specified time frame, stratifying by race. Through this project, RestoreHER researchers planned to regularly track data to identify trends over time and across policy change and assess the needs of this marginalized population in sentencing and policy reform.

This report provides a detailed view of the 190,600 women and girls incarcerated in the United States and how they fit into the even broader picture of correctional control.

With growing public attention to the problem of mass incarceration, people want to know about women’s experiences with incarceration. How many women are held in prisons, jails, and other correctional facilities in the United States? Why are they there? How are their experiences different from men’s? These are important questions, but finding the answers requires not only disentangling the country’s decentralized and overlapping criminal legal systems, but also unearthing the frustratingly limited data that’s broken down by gender.
