As derms, we hear it all the time: "I have dark skin, I don't need sunscreen!" 🌞 But here's the scoop: No one is immune to the sun's harmful UV rays, not even those with darker skin tones. While darker skin tones have more melanin, which offers some natural sun protection, it’s not enough. The darkest skin tones only have a natural SPF of 14, far less than the recommended 30. Without proper protection, sun damage is still a risk.

A recent study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy was associated with high patient satisfaction, improved hair density, and a low-risk safety profile Among men with male pattern baldness.

The deets:

291 male patients with AGA were treated with either PRP or placebo.
- statistically significant positive effect in hair density among patients receiving PRP
-statistically significant positive effect on hair count.
-70% treatment satisfaction rate among patients receiving PRP.

The highest patient satisfaction rates were seen among those treated with PRP plus minoxidil, followed by PRP only, minoxidil only, then placebo.

🌞✨ Did you know? A recent study by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) found that outdoor workers—like those in construction, landscaping, emergency medical services, and postal delivery—experience severe sunburns at double the rate of the general population.

In 2023, half of outdoor workers reported a sunburn compared to just a third of the general public. Plus, nearly 80% of outdoor workers got a tan or darker skin from sun exposure, compared to 67% of Americans overall. 🌞✨

If you or someone you love works outdoors, follow these tips to stay safe and protect your skin:

1) 🌳 Seek Shade: Whenever possible, find shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the sun's rays are strongest.

2) 👕 Wear Sun-Protective Clothing: Opt for lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses with UV protection. For extra safety, choose clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 50 or higher.

3) 🧴 Apply Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on all exposed skin. Reapply every two hours, especially after sweating.

4) 👩‍⚕️ See your dermatologist for regular skin checks if you notice any concerning lesions or changes in your skin. 🔍

Did you know squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are the second most common skin cancers and their numbers are on the rise?

These cancers are caused by the sun’s UV radiation, although some forms are caused by other things like viruses. SCCs tend to have a more ‘ warty’ appearance and are often tender or painful. They most commonly present on sun exposed skin, but the more virally-mediated lesions can be seen on the digits/hands and ge****ls.

SCCs tend to be immune responsive, more so than BCCs. In patients who are immunosuppressed from a transplant or medications, SCCs can behave more aggressively and at times spread (metastasize) to lymph nodes and beyond.

While most patients with SCCs will do well and be ‘cured’ of their cancer, some patients with more aggressive SCCs will need additional work ups and treatment.

If you have a spot on the skin that’s worrisome, be sure to see your dermatologist for an evaluation. As dermatologists, we love to be able to reassure our patients if it is benign, and if it’s not, we are glad that you sought care!

Did you know that melanomas on the hands and feet are more common in individuals with darker skin? 🤔

While this lesion on the toe did not quite classify as a melanoma, it was abnormal enough clinically and under the microscope to warrant complete removal with a staged excision.

So what is an acral melanoma?

- An irregular, dark, flat lesion on the palms, soles of feet, or nails.
- More common in people with darker skin and African, Asian, and Hispanic backgrounds.
- Less sun-derived than other melanomas, more often genetic.
- When detected early, surgical removal is effective.
- Most common form of melanoma in individuals with skin of color.
- Death from acral melanoma occurs most often because of a delay in diagnosis.
- Bob Marley died from an acral melanoma on his toe. He was only 36 years old.

Anyone and everyone can get a sunburn! 🌞 No matter what skin tone you have or where you’re from, with enough sun exposure, you can get a sunburn! This means sun protection and daily sunscreen use are imperative for EVERYONE…yes, YOU TOO! ☀️

This lovely lady got a sunburn on spring break while sitting outside on a cloudy day. ☁️ The slightly cooler temps and cloud coverage gave her a false sense of security that she didn’t actually need sunscreen. The result—a sunburn with peeling now a week out! 😟
