Tour Home Sneak Peek: This home is referred to as a Free Classic Queen Anne with Craftsman Influence, meaning, it was built during the period when Atlanta was slow to the full Craftsman style and Queen Anne-Victorian homes were still being built. Tour goers won’t want to miss the “Big Table” in the dining room. Dating back to the early 1900s, the hand carved piece was bought at an antique shop in Albany, Ga., and the couple actually spoke with someone from the family who first owned it. The stained glass window in the family room was originally on the outside of the house, and it along with the fireplaces, one mantle, and a few moldings and doors in the upstairs bathrooms are the only original features to the house.

Tour Home Sneak Peek: Transplants all the way from Midtown Atlanta, Michael and Maggie were blown away with this 1907 Victorian Cottage – the first and only Grant Park home they toured – particularly by the deceptive scale and all the fun nooks and crannies. Their favorite thing about the home – in addition to their neighbors – is the front porch that faces West. “Watching sunsets never gets old,” said Maggie. They also love the vast foyer: “It’s a breath of fresh air, and memories of our children racing from door to door will stick with us forever,” she added. This home also shares a characteristic unique to this and other historic neighborhoods, and that’s the alley behind the house. The land on the other side of the alley housed stables for this block’s horses back in the day. Original to the home are the five fireplaces – all but the one in the living room have their original tile; glass-pane doors in front of the living room and dining room; lead glass windows in the front of the house; hardwood floors; all the bedroom doors with keyholes; molding on the first floor; and the clawfoot tub in the main bathroom.

Tour Home Sneak Peek: Celebrating more than 150 years as Grant Park’s signature home, the Burns Mansion once again opens its doors to welcome friends and guests to celebrate the holiday season. Built in 1868, the home was the vision of Captain James Austin Burns, a Union officer who settled in Atlanta after the Civil War to oversee the re-establishment of the railroads to the city. His headstone, along with two of his fellow Union soldiers, can be found in the side yard (although they are not buried here). After his death in 1902, the home was purchased by his close friend Colonel Scott, also of the Union Army. When Scott died in 1928, the home became a boarding house and began a multi-decade decline until 1976, when the first of many attempts to restore the home began. On display in the elegant, but also quite comfortable, family-friendly home are photos of the house through the different decades of repair and paint colors. Each owner since 1976 has taken the time and effort to lovingly help restore the Burns Mansion to its former grandeur. The house currently stands as a nearly restored Queen Anne-Victorian with 33 rooms that include six bedrooms and six bathrooms, along with three stairwells, a home gym, a library, 63 windows, 11 fireplaces, seven porches and a well in the middle of the kitchen.

Tour Home Sneak Peek: Having both grown up in Atlanta, Jennifer and David always admired Grant Park for its charm and history. David first moved to the neighborhood in 2015 and quickly realized he never wanted to leave. In 2020 he began following the “Baker House” renovation on Instagram. “Seeing” some of the house in its original state and watching it transform is something special for homeowners to witness, so the Tims were already in love when they moved in. The two black and white photos framed on the dry bar were gifted by the granddaughter of J. H. and Georgia Baker, who built the house in 1906 and whose family lived in the home until the late 1950s. The modern transition of the house happened only just a few years ago by a local Grant Park couple. It was during that renovation that the stained glass windows on the front of the home that were thought to be lost were found in the attic.

Artists Market Spotlight: Mama Makes Thingz
We are excited to welcome Mama Makes Thingz to this year's Artists Market! Lori is the mama behind Mama Makes Thingz, a gal born to create more than just humans. She previously pointed her passions towards sewing garments and building furniture, and her creative curiosity has led her in recent years to small batch soapmaking. Once Lori discovered the science of soap by utilizing natural and unique ingredients, she wants nothing more than to share this luxury with the world because everyone deserves to be cared for and pampered, just as a mother would intend.

Tour Home Sneak Peek: This Victorian bungalow built in 1906 has transitioned back and forth between a single- and multi-family home. The Weibel family decided to embrace the current multi-family layout and move in as-is. In fact, they’ve made only a few updates, and some of their favorite things about the home are due to the house once being split up. They love having two kitchens, for instance, and having the option to rent out half the home. Tour goers immediately should notice the beautiful stained glass in the front windows; the one on the front door has the home’s original house number. Other original features are the fireplaces, door and window molding, picture hanging molding, and (likely) the floors.

Tour Home Sneak Peek: This Folk Victorian was likely built around 1889 by W.L. Jones, with an original address of 110 Gullat. According to the 1900 Census, W.L. Jones Jr., his family and in-laws, and two boarders lived in the house. Historical researcher Cary Walker found that Jones, Jr. was a member of Atlanta’s first detective department, as well as being a well-known private detective. He was known as “Swamp Fox,” perhaps due to the then swampy land behind the house. Under the creative hands of the current owners, the house has undergone a major transition. Just this year, the Harmans renovated the kitchen and added the rear bedroom, laundry, screened porch on the main floor, and an office/gym.

See you next weekend - December 9 & 10!
Tour Home Sneak Peek: Like many neighborhood homes, this Victorian bungalow has no official records of when it was built. There was a fire in the Fulton County courthouse in 1920, so though historians guess many of the homes in Grant Park were built closer to the turn of the century, 1920 is as far back as records go. Evidence of the turn of the century are found in the home’s stained-glass windows, original fireplaces, and built-in shelves. Previous homeowners preserved and passed down an original clawfoot tub now painted yellow to match the monkey accented wallpaper the couple installed in the kid’s bathroom off the kitchen, which was completely renovated along with the main bathroom.

Beginning today though Tour Weekend (December 9 & 10) we will be giving you a sneak peek of all the homes on the Tour!
Tour Home Sneak Peek: The Langes have been working hard on renovating this 1908 corner gem since they bought the house in 2021. Excited for more space after living in a small Grant Park bungalow during the pandemic, “we actually had the entire renovation designed and drawn before we were even under contract!” said Jessica. They rebuilt the back 12 feet of the house down to the dirt, opening the kitchen to the living room and expanding it by removing a full bathroom (but left the quirky window box that must’ve once been above a bathtub). They converted the back porch to a mud room and powder room, and upstairs – a covered porch to the primary bathroom, a small kitchenette to a fourth bedroom, and an upstairs utility closet to a laundry room.

ARTISTS' MARKET SPOTLIGHT: Big and Little Cookie
Nancy Solie and her daughter Clara Logue have long been creating things together through sewing, woodworking, crocheting, painting, and even needle felting. It wasn’t until they started thinking about upcycling, however, that they came up with some products that were unique and viable enough to turn into a business!
The name Big and Little Cookie came from the childhood nickname Nancy gave Clara of “little cookie”, which persists even though Clara is now a (mostly) adult! They are starting to gain a following on Etsy, Instagram, and through show circuits in GA, AL, and WA, and they are so excited to see where the business takes them in the next few years!

On this we wanted to highlight our partner organizations for the Candlelight Tour of Homes. Funds raised during the Tour go back into our neighborhood community and are split to benefit St Paul United Methodist Church, Grant Park Cooperative Preschool - GPCP , and Grant Park Parents Network (GPPN) . If you are looking for a place to spread your generosity, a donation to any and all of these organizations would be a worthy cause.
We hope to see you on the Tour December 9 & 10.

Our Story
For nearly 40 years. St. Paul United Methodist Church has hosted the Grant Park Candlelight Tour of Homes, two evenings of holiday splendor, art, music and family fun, all in the historic Atlanta neighborhood of Grant Park. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 event will look different, but still reminiscent of this favorite holiday tradition which has drawn more than 1000 visitors each year. On Dec. 12, 2020 St. Paul is hosting the Candlelight Tour of Joy, complete with a house decorating contest, virtual artists’ market, (socially distanced) traveling band of holiday music and a virtual Christmas concert.
So, neighbors, string up some lights, inflate some Santas, and deck the halls! There’s room for every decorator in our house decorating contest with awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, plus honorable mentions that may include classic decorations, the Griswold award, best use of lights, and if you haven’t gotten over Halloween, The Nightmare before Christmas! Information to register will appear here soon.
For artists and shoppers everywhere, St. Paul UMC is also hosting a Tour of Joy Virtual Artists’ Market. Because the market is virtual, we are excited to feature at least twice as many artists as in typical years, and extend it beyond the weekend. It will still offer all the various items you have come to love and count on for your holiday shopping – from jewelry and soaps to handmade toys and pottery.
Finally, what is a holiday event without music? To really get you in the holiday spirit, the Candlelight Tour of Joy brings you a traveling band of holiday merrymakers the evening of Dec. 12. Starting at 6pm at St. Paul UMC (601 Grant St.), a small band of musicians and singers in a parade-style vehicle will head south down to Atlanta Ave. and back. Also, the St. Paul choir will hold its annual Candlelight Christmas Concert virtually on Sunday at 5pm.
