📸 Here, a nurse is escorted out of her hospital by a white police officer during the 1969 Charleston Hospital Workers Strike. If you look closely, you’ll see she’s wearing a hat—it’s the paper hat of Local 1199B of the National Organizing Committee of Hospital and Nursing Home Employees. Swipe to get another look!
Her union was on strike for better pay and working conditions for its majority-Black nurses and exam room technicians. The strike lasted for months until the Charleston County and Medical College Hospitals agreed to raise the workers’ wages.

Thousands of pictures of community civil rights activists like this are being digitized as part of our “Advancing Workers’ Rights in the American South” project, which is supported by a grant from CLIR. For the first time, scholars across the country can access our labor archives and uncover stories like his.

Throughout the 70s, community activists demonstrated against the widespread exploitation of America’s working class.
📸 This protestor’s sign shows how the concerns of the Civil Rights Movement and organized labor were often the same. Until the needs of the American worker were met, civil rights activists knew that African Americans’ rights to employment and dignity would never be fully protected.

In April 1971, Local Union 110, of the Bakery and Confectionery Workers International Union, went on strike after Derst Baking Company refused to increase their wages. By nearly Christmas that same year, the strike was still ongoing.
📸 This photograph shows the program for a rally in support of the striking workers at the P***n United Methodist Church in Savannah. Labor organizers knew that community support was crucial for a strike’s success, and Black ministers often advocated for them to their congregations.

Coretta Scott King took up the mantle of civil rights leader after her husband’s murder, and she used her huge influence to support civil rights demonstrations and labor strikes.
📸 During the contentious 1969 Charleston Hospital Workers Strike, she took out this ad in the New York Times. You can see how she uses her own image to link the power of civil rights and labor activism.

The literary contenders are "Mama Day" by Gloria Naylor, "Beloved" by Toni Morrison, "Invisible Man" by Ralph Ellison, "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston, and "The Souls of Black Folk" by W.E.B. Du Bois and "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou.
A three-judge panel of Georgia State University librarians will vote to select two finalists; the scholars will all participate in the final vote to select the winner.

October 23-29, 2023, is International Open Access week.
"Open Data" is becoming a critical part of scientific research. Open Knowledge Foundation defines open data as data that “anyone can freely access, use, modify, and share for any purpose (subject, at most, to requirements that preserve provenance and openness).” While sharing data can be a crucial part of the scientific process, it is also complicated by data privacy and data storage issues.
Did you know Georgia State University Librarians have assembled resources to help you navigate, understand, and use Open Data? Explore them here: https://blog.library.gsu.edu/2023/10/22/international-open-access-week-at-georgia-state-university-library/
