The evolution of these pictures don’t quite capture the amount of work, emotion and stress we (especially Sarah) went through to demo and build out this space. and I set a goal to do it in a month which we were told would be basically impossible. I’m happy to say we did…and we’re still married! However, it wasn’t without significant help from family and friends.

This new space provides us with a much needed revitalization of our business, our mentality, and our passion for strength & fitness! Thank you to all of you who have supported us over the years, and especially those of you who helped make this move possible!

One of the best ways to get the most biased, inaccurate, cherry-picked data and agenda driven information on nutrition/diets is through just about any Netflix documentary on the subject. Their design is set to spark an emotional reaction, often guilt, without providing context. Most people won’t bother validating the information their shown because they’re “experts” or medical doctors (who’s education in nutrition is typically severely lacking). Don’t be fooled.

Any exercise done improperly, regardless of the load or intensity, can adversely affect the lower back while it is already the subject of discomfort, or pain for a relatively high percentage of the population.

Conversely, the opposite would also be true in which (most) exercises done properly will favorably affect the lower back. This is not because they are specific lower back exercises, but because they build core strength which aides in stabilizing the lower back.

People often think they need more “core work” whether it’s to “tone” their middle, or to help their back. However, core work as a standalone lacks versatility and value when compared to what you could be practicing.

Use “core work” (most people understand to be things like planks, crunches, sit-ups, etc.) as an accessory. This means, if there’s time AFTER the higher value stuff is done.

*Side-note* —-If you want to “tone” your middle, or see an ab for summmer… put a little more effort into the more important stuff (see pic above for example) and focus less on the planks, sit-ups, and crunches.

We brought our good friend in yesterday to host a gymnastics seminar that took a deep dive into two highly sought after movements in the fitness world; the handstand push-up, and the muscle up. While this deep dive was really only scratching the surface of some basic gymnastics skills, there was one really prominent takeaway. We saw some of our members do things that they’ve never been able to do in the past. While it may not have been the actual HSPU or MU itself, it was part of the foundation that is a prerequisite for overall skill, safety and sustainability. More times than not, people have tried some of these more complex movements and failed mostly because they’ve never taken the time to build the foundation. Unfortunately, much of these things need far more attention than just 10 or 15 minutes in a class setting, or when you’re in the middle of a workout trying to catch your breath as your heart is beating out of your chest. This is like not knowing how to swim, and thinking you will be successful if you try surfing. Most don’t perceive “fitness” as a multitude of various skills that require attention, but this is what keeps the pursuit of it interesting and fresh. Most don’t realize that those that CAN execute these more complex movements with some degree of proficiency only can because of the hundreds to thousands of hours of prerequisite skill building that was done OUTSIDE of showing up to class 3-5 times a week. It is what you don’t (or can’t) see that has, or will make the biggest difference.

One of the most important factors of any successful fitness program is not the style of training, or workout itself. It’s usually never that it’s this new, revolutionary form of training. Consistency is always the most important factor, and what has the most profound influence on consistency is an individual’s system of support. The strength of the community is perhaps the most important, and greatest quality of our program!

Joining a gym is one thing. Knowing what to do, and how to do it is another. Our job as coaches is to create programs that we can then modify to the individual needs, and goals of our members based on their experience, and limitations. Then, most importantly, instruct on how to properly approach those programs.

Many people join commercial gyms because they are fairly cheap. As a result of not knowing what to do (or how to do it) they stop going. BUT…they keep paying because one day, they might go back! Gyms like this have a low monthly rate because they want your monthly payment that you will likely never cancel because they make it such a process, and the price is low enough that it’s not worth the hassle. Some brands even bank on the fact that you DON’T go!

Our passion is helping our members become better versions of themselves. They become stronger, healthier, and more fit! We want them here putting in the work because that is what validates our process and keeps our fire burning.

It’s that time of year again. That time when you look back on the past year and figure out what you can do better. Whatever your goal may be, without drive, and more importantly; accountability, it won’t stick. If your goal happens to be fitness related, our coaching provides individualized direction, and accountability. Unlike Planet Fitness, we are a community that we want our members to be a part of, routinely. That’s how they get positive, life-changing results! This is what gives us purpose and makes us happy.

Why do we do this?

For one, the feeling of accomplishment and the rush of endorphins you get from completing the daily physical challenges of training is unmatched.

Secondly, and most importantly—this is the ONE thing we have complete, and total control over; our fitness. You make a choice… Either to exercise purposefully which will have a dramatic, statistically positive affect on the risk of sickness & disease, and quality of life.
This is the only proven way that aging, and frailty can be delayed.

Or, you choose not to.

What choice are you going to make?

Getting in shape is fairly simple.
- Pick a few movements you can do fairly well, and START DOING THEM!
- Match or improve (by a relatively small amount) either the volume, or intensity over the previous week.
- Do this consistently for 2-4 months, then add some variation to those initial movements, and do it again.

There is no big secret. If it’s this simple, what’s holding you back?

Photos from Fulcrum Athletics's post 11/25/2022

This is what consistency looks like, one year apart. Teenagers NEED strength training not only for their physical health, but also for their mental health. Understanding the value of being strong and fit can influence the quality and direction of the rest of their life.

Our teens classes run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30PM. Just fill out the form on our website (fulcrumathletics.net) for more details on how to get started!

You can absolutely do this type of training on your own. You can buy all of the equipment you’d see in the gym. But, you just cannot replicate or replace the innate accountability that is created by the community, programming, and coaching. Most simply cannot push themselves on their own to the extent they could in this environment, and that’s what makes the biggest difference.

Most people avoid doing hard things because, well, it’s just easier to find an excuse not to.

Don’t be ‘most people.’

Strength training is the primary driver of our programming. However, “lifting heavy” often is misunderstood as being dangerous, or that it will build too much muscle creating a ‘bulky’ appearance.

Neither of these misconceptions are true! Lifting “heavy” is relative to each individual, and their experience and ability. What is heavy for one person, may be “light” for another, and impossible for someone else. As coaches, we’re here to help you find what is sustainable for you within your capability.

As far as the “bulky” effect…strength training tends to make your muscles “more visible”. While muscle will grow slightly, the general misconception is that they will end up looking like a professional bodybuilder which is simply not true! Muscles will become more visible because of slight muscle growth, but to a greater extent because of loss of body fat over time.

Our youth fitness program includes classes for both teenagers (12 y/o and up) as well as kids (8-11 y/o). The primary goal of this program is to introduce kids and teens to progressive, general, strength & conditioning. We teach them how to move, how to lift properly, how to approach and overcome challenges and ultimately get them excited about health & fitness!

These coached classes run weekly throughout the school year, so if you’d like more details, or would like for your child/ teen to try a class, just fill out the form on our website (fulcrumathletics.net) and one of our coaches will get in touch with you!

08/31/2022

While our members participate in a class setting, it is to follow the template of a general training program that has been designed for continuous periods of 8-12 week blocks.

The role of coaching is to take this general template and modify it appropriately for each individual where, and when necessary based on their experience, and assessed ability, allowing them to work around their limitations.

We emphasize strength training probably more so than most other places, but that’s not to say we don’t do aerobic work as well.

If you’d like to try a class, just fill out the form on our website (fulcrumathletics.net) and one of our coaches will reach out to schedule a trial!
