From the book Eternal Sobriety

God’s Simple Truth

In sobriety, many of us believe that God is going to reveal His Will to us through the experiences and events of our daily walk. This has some partial truth, but it is a passive approach, and does not provide us with much of an opportunity for growth in understanding God and His Will. This passive approach expresses itself as only doing what is in front of us to do, without effort and seeking on our part. This approach is half-hearted and falls short of doing God’s Will. If we rely only on experience, we will likely remain susceptible to making wrong choices. The human will is the seat of all choice. Turning our will over to God does not mean we stop using our own will. In fact, we cannot. We are always involved in choosing the direction we are to go and the behavior we will exhibit. God created us as free, moral agents. The problem is not that we have a will but that we make bad choices. We need to be enlightened to use our will correctly; we need to be set free from selfish and self-centered motives and choices. We in fact are under the control of our emotions and bad beliefs.
In every situation and event, from waking up to going to sleep, we are making choices. These choices are made by the use of our will, and we are accountable for the results of those decisions. We are not always conscious of these choices, but the thinking process and the beliefs behind it, are always at work. Our tendency, which may often be driven by habit, is to do those things that fix our feelings, a deep-seated pattern representative of our drinking years. Our experience has been one of making selfish choices to feel good. That’s the natural, human way. Good feelings can certainly be the result of doing God’s Will, but they can also be a result of self-seeking. Feelings are deceptive and should not be the basis for making critical, life altering choices. Therefore, we should not judge these critical choices with our emotions. Feelings are only temporary, but selfish decisions can go on for long periods producing regrets.
Our own will’s source of choices develops from what is in our belief system. Error moves us toward self and away from God’s path. In our belief system, the only reliable and authoritative source should be truth. We are likely to need a major transplant in our belief system. Ultimately, truth must come from some source more stable than our flawed belief system and the precarious feelings those beliefs produce. That source is the truth of God! We find it in many forms in A.A. Much of the material in the book Alcoholics Anonymous, the slogans, the Serenity Prayer, the Daily Reflections, and the Twelve Steps are good examples. The truths we find in these sources are biblically based. Over time our experience begins to reflect our better choices based on the truths we learn in active recovery. We learn to put aside our selfish aims and begin practicing spiritual principles. It all works together to give us better results. We should be quick to see that what God really wants us to do is to practice living by application of spiritual principles. This is the essence of God’s Will.

The Eternal Sobriety Ministry has added a new Testimony to its testimony page. The testimony is given by Cody S. Testimonies on this page are from individuals in Alcoholics Anonymous who found that after successful time in recovery they needed the power of the biblical God rather than just a self-made idea of a higher power.

Alcoholics Anonymous started in 1935 when two struggling alcoholics met and found that by sharing their own experiences and studying God's Word, they had found a spiritual solution to their common problem. In the beginning there was no manual so for four years until after 1939 their meetings and practices were dedicated to turning their life over to the biblical God. The AA book was printed in 1939 which outlined the 12-Step program that is followed today 84 years later. Unfortunately, it minimized the need for the biblical God. As a secular program, it has deteriorated over time and has lost much of its original spiritual meaning, resulting in lower long term success rates. No longer is God seen as essential to the recovery process as it once was. The words about the necessity of God becoming the central fact of their life are there in the book, but the beliefs and actions are not. Instead, the practice of conceptualizing your own higher power out of your imagination seems to dominate the meetings. If one brings up God in many of today's AA meetings, the expressions of "Don't talk about God, you will scare away the newcomer" and "This is a spiritual program and not a religious one" tend to discourage real God believers. It seems like the society within AA have lost their first love. It has become a meeting dedicated to beginners. It is primarily only a kindergarten and individuals who manage to stay sober for a few years are not being fed the necessary truths to help them grow past that level. And eventually many are slipping. However, now that Zoom has emerged as a major communication tool for online meetings there is a growing set of online meetings that are bringing back the original program to understanding the need for God. This article introduces an on-line workshop conducted by Russell Spatz from Miami. People who attend this workshop are now beginning to carry the original message back into the in-person meetings. If you are sober and wish to know more about this workshop along with links to online God-Friendly meetings that can help move you out of kindergarten, send an email to Russel Spatz at [email protected]. I have included a brief share from the Sat workshop. A must listen.

Eternal Sobriety is working on a forthcoming article about the Christian process of Sanctification.

How can that help you, the recovering alcoholic? Here is how.

If you are in a 12-Step program, the 4th, 5th, and 6th steps prepare us to become cognizant of our own personal shortcomings, a prerequisite to character change.

Many members of A.A. misunderstand Step 7 which states: Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. There is a tendency to say “Let go and let God; just kick back, relax, rest on our laurels, and don’t worry about anything. Bad idea. The result of that attitude will yield little accomplishment of removing character defects. Nothing could be further from the truth, and we need to see clearly that it requires some action on our part.

The full truth is that Step 7 is only an asking of God to assist us in removing defects. It also takes personal effort. In A.A., we must practice principles for change to occur. In Christianity, we must practice obedience to God's commandants.

It's difficult to practice spiritual principles, which aid in removing character defects, without having synergistic spiritual power within you to apply spiritual principles. That power is only available when a person has been regenerated or saved. The upcoming article will help you understand what God says about the biblical process of character change (sanctification) and the 12-Step process of character defect removal, which, is patterned after the Bible.

Help your friends in 12-Step programs by sharing this post. Liking this page will enable Eternal Sobriety to send a notification when this article and others are released.
