City of Auburn will host a Start in Auburn event “Financial Foundations for Business Success” and will be taught by Josh Sahib, Managing Director of the Lowder Center for Family Business and Entrepreneurship. In this workshop you will learn key financial terms, tools, and techniques to manage your business finances effectively and gain insights into essential topics like breakeven analysis, cash flow management, and financial projections.

Auburn University’s McCrary Institute for Cyber and Critical Infrastructure Security was awarded a $10 million Department of Energy grant in partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to create a pilot regional cybersecurity research and operations center to protect the electric power grid against cyber attacks.

Auburn University has been ranked among the top 100 U.S. universities granted utility patents in 2023, according to a report published recently by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). With 16 new patents issued in 2023, Auburn was ranked 87th on the list, 10 places higher than last year. The list was created to highlight and celebrate American innovation and to recognize those universities that play a large role in advancing the innovation ecosystem within the U.S. and beyond.

Join us for a panel discussion on steps to get your business going, including the process for obtaining a business license, permits, how to file and pay taxes and remitting personal property taxes. The Panel will include Latrice Mose, revenue manager for the City of Auburn, Lillie Finley, purchasing director for the City of Opelika and Oline Price, Lee County revenue commissioner.

The City of Auburn was recently named one of the Best-Performing Small Cities in the U.S. by the Milken Institute and one of the Top Metros by Site Selection Magazine.
The Milken Institute ranked the Auburn-Opelika area No. 14 on its list, which tracks the economic performance of about 400 U.S. metro areas. Auburn was the second-highest of three Alabama cities that made the top 50.
Site Selection Magazine ranked the Auburn-Opelika area No. 3 on its list, which ranked communities with populations over 50,000 but under 200,000 basked on the number of industrial projects announced in 2023.

10th Anniversary Tiger Cage Pitch Competition Semi-Finals happening this Week
12 outstanding student teams who have advanced to the semi-final round of Auburn’s student pitch competition, Tiger Cage, will present their innovative business ideas while competing for a share of an $80,000 prize pool on Friday, February 23 in Horton Hardgrave Hall. Teams who make it through the semi-finals will be eligible to compete in the final round on March, 29, 2024.

Auburn Startup, VivoSphere, Nominated for Prestigious Ignite Award
This New Venture Accelerator startup was nominated for the Ignite Award at the Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS) International Conference and Exhibition SLAS2024 to be held on February 3-6 in Boston, Massachusetts. VivoSphere co-founders Elizabeth Lipke and Yuan Tian (pictured), will be present to meet with potential customers, partners and investors from around the world who are expected to be in attendance.
“We are honored to be nominated for the prestigious Ignite Award and thankful for the extraordinary opportunity it offers us to exhibit on the Innovation AveNEW showcase at SLAS next month,” said Tian. “The visibility and industry exposure our young company will get as a result of this featured position will go a long way in support of our efforts to progress our patented technology into market trials.”

Patrick Reed named executive director of the IP Exchange at Auburn University
Reed, formerly assistant vice chancellor for innovation and partnerships at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, has been named the new executive director of the IP Exchange (IPX) at Auburn University. He officially assumed the role on Jan. 2.
“My focus will be to grow innovation in every corner of the university, not just the traditional areas,” Reed said. “There are lots of opportunities to go in new areas and new directions that may not have seen IPX before. I’m very excited to explore the possibilities.”
