One of our very own. We’re proud of the work Sadie does with The City of Auburn and with SWFD.
This week, we’ll be recognizing some of our rockstar telecommunicators, and first up is Sadie Stevens! As a communications officer for two and a half years, she’s built incredible relationships with her team members. 🤝
Sadie says she loves knowing her job is a direct link to the safety and wellbeing of Auburn residents, visitors and first responders.
During her time with the City, she’s adopted two pets 🐱🐶 and married her husband! 💒 Congratulations!
Please join us in thanking Sadie for her service to our community 👏👏👏
On 4/7/24 at approximately 2:14 pm, SWFD units were dispatched to a working structure fire in the 500 block of Lee Road 1. First-due trucks were en route within two minutes of the first alarm.
On scene, first units set up command with a fully-involved mobile home structure. A 360 by command noted a vehicle and an adjacent shed structure in danger. A defensive attack was established, and remained for the duration of the call. The fire was declared under control within an hour and units were on scene for just over three hours.
While the structure was a total loss, fortunately the residents were not home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported to civilians or first responders.
SWFD was assisted via automatic and mutual aid by units from Farmville Fire, Beauregard Fire, Notasulga Fire, East Alabama EMS, Lee County EMA, Lee County Sheriff’s Office and Red Cross.
Our risk of severe weather overnight, and into Wednesday morning, has increased. Be weather aware and have your weather emergency plans in place. With the storm arriving in nighttime hours, make sure to have a weather radio with audible alerts, or your phone set to audibly alert to dangerous conditions.
Be weather aware in the coming days. Have your weather emergency plans in place before the storm system arrives.
Southwest Lee County Fire is thankful for the support from Mid-South RC&D and local legislators! With the help of grant funds from Mid-South RC&D our department was able to purchase two multi-gas monitors and a new set of firefighter protective equipment. The gas monitors will identify concentrations of harmful gases to help us protect our volunteers and citizens. Thank you for your support and for helping us improve the services we provide.

All of us at SWFD that raced to Beauregard will never forget that day. Tragedy and community strength, all on full display.
The Beauregard Volunteer Fire Department would like to take a moment to remember the 23 lives lost, the 100 + injured and the countless others that were left homeless across our county on this day five years ago. We also want to remember, and thank the 200 + men and women from the 20 fire departments both volunteer and career, the 300 + law enforcement officers, and many EMS providers who dropped what they were doing to come and assist us in the recovery and care of the victims that afternoon and in the following days. We will never be able to thank you enough.
Our members had a great time learning about helicopter and landing zone operations at our department training.
A special thanks to Life Saver 3 East Alabama and West Georgia for coming out to help teach.

Lee County has been moved into Fire Alert status from No Burn. However, this only allows permits for prescribed burns. Individuals are still banned from burning at this time.

AFC Makes Changes to ‘No Burn’ Order
With rainfall amounts varying across the state this week, the Alabama Forestry Commission is lifting the No Burn order in 33 counties in the southern half of the state. Effective at 5:00 p.m. on November 17, these counties will drop back to a Fire Alert. In those counties, burn permits will be issued to certified prescribed burn managers only. This new lesser restriction includes all counties south of and including Sumter, Greene, Hale, Perry, Dallas Autauga, Elmore, Macon, and Lee. The 34 counties in the northern half of the state remain under the No Burn order issued by Governor Ivey on November 9.
According to State Forester Rick Oates, agency personnel have been assessing rain accumulation and fuel moisture content in all counties to re-evaluate the No Burn order. “The recent rainfall should temporarily help us with the wildfire situation in some counties and hopefully more rain is on the way,” stated Oates. “Unfortunately, the northern counties did not receive enough precipitation to lift the No Burn order. Predicted rain for early next week may allow the situation to be re-assessed.”
Since October 1, AFC wildland firefighters, with the assistance of volunteer fire departments, have battled 727 wildfires consuming more than 7,770 acres across the state. With the No Burn order in place over the last nine days, 53 wildfires have burned approximately 200 acres of land in Alabama.
Still no outdoor burning in our area.
While Lee County has received some rainfall, a state-wide burn ban remains in effect which prohibits ALL outdoor burning. Until it is rescinded by the State Forester, no residential or commercial outdoor burning is allowed. This ban also prohibits the use of outdoor fire pits and burn barrels.
To report a fire, always call 911.

The Alabama Forestry Commission issued a statewide Fire Alert which took effect Friday, Sept. 22. Until further notice no private property burning will be allowed. Those caught burning during this time could potentially face punishment through their individual law enforcement agency.
Congrats to one of our own, Jesse Phelps
We would like to announce and welcome our new crew member to the Life Saver family. Jesse Phelps (middle photo) has transferred from Pensacola, FL base to ours. Jesse actually lives in Opelika and has worked in the Auburn/Opelika area in the past. Jesse is a RN/Medic with many years of experience in both roles. Jesse and his wife just recently had their first child a baby boy! We are excited Jesse is part of our team! Give him a big HELLO when you see him on flights.
We will always remember those we lost that day, especially those first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice.
