Although we may not see baby critters in our game camera snapshots, we would like to dedicate this week’s post to what to do if you see baby animals in Chewacla State Park or elsewhere.
1. Observe from a distance: Avoid approaching or touching baby animals.
2. Monitor for signs of distress: keep an eye on their condition. If they appear injured, sick, or in distress, you may need to intervene.
3. Contact local wildlife authorities including animal control or wildlife rehabilitation centers
4. If it is an injured raptor, contact the Auburn University Raptor Center at (334) 844-6347.
For immediate questions, you may ask our park naturalist for help with an animal in the park.
Either leave the animals and area undisturbed until professional help is available or follow the directions provided by professionals.

Yesterday, we hosted Vicky Beckham Smith with A-Z ANIMALS for our first “Bats, Bugs & Biodiversity” program. This program would not have been possible without the generous support from the Big Cedar Education Foundation, and we were honored to have the Foundation’s very own Joyce Turnipseed join us!
Joyce joined our guests to meet some of A-Z ANIMALS’ bats up close. It was a great educational time for all!
The next stop for this team will be at Frank Jackson State Park on April 7, 2024. To save a spot at the program, get a free

A year ago, Wild Birds Unlimited graciously donated a bluebird house to the park. Although it remained unoccupied last year, we have a pair who have built their nest! The nest box is near the playground, next to our nature center.
The next time you come to visit, take a moment to observe the bluebird pair hard at work. Eastern bluebirds meticulously construct their nests using grasses, feathers, pine needles, and twigs. They often select cavities in trees or man-made nest boxes as their nesting sites. Both parents participate in nest-building and care for their young throughout the breeding season which starts now and extends into the summer months.
You can help bluebirds by installing boxes in your own yard and even participate in citizen science efforts including NestWatch! At Chewacla, we will be keeping a close eye on our bluebird pair as they start laying eggs and raising their young. When visiting the park, please be mindful of the nest box and try not to disturb these hard-working parents. 🐦
We had some happy hikers over the weekend and saw some beautiful natural finds. Thank you to everyone who came out for one of our guided hikes. If you would like to join us on future hikes, reserve your spot today at https://reserve.alapark.com/register/
Come hike with us this weekend! We still have spots available for our hike tomorrow at 2:00 pm to the Hidden Falls and on Sunday at 10:00 am on the Sweet Shrub Trail. If you are interested in joining the adventure, email our naturalist today at [email protected]
