More affordable housing is on the way! Earlier this week, Mayor Coffman and city staff joined community partners at the groundbreaking of the Fitzsimons Gateway Affordable Housing Community—a 210-unit project for families and individuals earning 30% to 70% of the area's median income.
Located at Colfax Avenue and Peoria Street, this exciting project is expected to be completed by late 2026. We’re proud to support it through our Community Investment Financing Program, helping bring more affordable housing options to Aurora.

There has been a lot of misleading information shared about what is happening in our city. Aurora is a safe community. Media have conflated and considerably exaggerated incidents that are isolated to a handful of problem properties alone.
Yes, we are concerned that there is a small Tren de Aragua (TdA) presence in Aurora and we have been taking it seriously. We have responded. We have made arrests. We will continue to make arrests. We will continue to address the problems that the absentee, out-of-state owners of these properties have allowed to fester unchecked. Aurora will aggressively pursue all actions available under city code and criminal statute.
As Aurora Police Department shared, we have received questions about Jhonardy Jose Pacheco-Chirinos also known as “Cookie” or “Galleta.” We previously announced his arrest in connection to a July 28 shooting. We are able to confirm Pacheco-Chirinos, 22, pictured here, is a documented member of Tren de Aragua (TdA). The department is not aware of his status within the gang. He is currently in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Local, regional and national media are leading the nation to believe that Aurora is wholly unsafe. That is simply not true. While these isolated situations are rightfully of great concern and warrant increased action and scrutiny, violent crime in the city is down in nearly all crime categories.
Going to grocery stores, parks, schools, banks, shopping centers, visiting with neighbors and other everyday activities remain unchanged.
The city and the Aurora Police Department (APD) will not make any conclusory statements about specific incidents or provide details about law enforcement strategy and operations. Doing so would be counterproductive to our public safety efforts.
Furthermore, as we have stated previously, the city and APD established a special task force in collaboration with other local, state and federal partners to specifically address concerns about TdA and other criminal activity affecting the metro community. We are grateful that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), a valuable federal partner, has acknowledged its ongoing work into TdA across the metro and appreciate the additional resources it provides to combat this issue.
We will continue to urge all community members to report crimes to local law enforcement.
Again, Aurora is a safe place to live, work and visit. It is tragic that select individuals and entities have mischaracterized our city based on isolated incidents. We encourage you to build up our community and not allow the hysteria of others to tear it down.
Are you looking to participate in a unique volunteer project that will leave a lasting impact on future generations? Then, join the Prairie Restoration Project at the Plains Conservation Center to restore relationships between people and nature.
Volunteers will have a chance to embrace the great outdoors and get their hands dirty by doing tasks like removing non-native invasive plant species, planting native prairie plants, monitoring wildlife and collecting data as part of a research experiment.
No experience is required, but all volunteers must be 12 or older. Shifts take place in the mornings every Thursday and one Saturday and Sunday per month. There are no restrictions on how little or often you can volunteer. Learn more at AuroraGov.org/Restore.

UPDATE: The city and Aurora Police Department, as previously stated, established a special task force in collaboration with other local, state and federal partners to specifically address concerns about Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TdA) and other criminal activity affecting migrant communities. We are grateful that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), a valuable federal partner, has acknowledged its ongoing work into TdA across the metro and appreciate the additional resources it provides to combat this issue.
We are aware that components of TdA are operating in Aurora. APD has been increasingly collecting evidence to show the gang is connected to crimes in the area. However, as we have said previously and as the DEA similarly stated, it would be improper at this time for the city and APD to make any conclusory statements about specific incidents or provide details about law enforcement strategy and operations.
Based on our initial investigative work, we believe reports of TdA influence in Aurora are isolated. We urge all community members, including members of our migrant communities, to please report crimes committed against them to their local law enforcement agencies and not remain silent victims. Crime victims can report crimes anonymously by calling Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720.913.STOP (7867).
As always, information could change as the investigations continue at the local, state and federal levels.
