How Does an IUD Work?

Both the copper and hormonal types of IUDs work by making it difficult for s***m to reach your egg.

ParaGard causes an inflammatory response in the lining of your uterus. This inflammation is toxic to s***m. It also makes your uterus hostile to implantation, if fertilization occurs.
But recent studies have failed to find evidence that fertilization ever occurs. ParaGard works for up to 10 years after insertion.

Mirena works to thin the lining of your uterus to prevent the transport of s***m into your fallopian tubes where fertilization must occur. The progestin it releases also thickens your cervical mucus and can prevent ovulation.
Mirena can last for up to five years after insertion. Skyla and Liletta are smaller and contain a lower dose of progestin. They both thin your uterus lining and can last up to three years.

Why Does My Period Hurt So Badly?

While some women experience mild or moderate discomfort during menstruation, others suffer from severe debilitating pain that hinders them from doing their day-to-day activities. No one knows what another woman's pain is like, so it is important to understand what periods should feel like, and then decide if all is normal. Some women also experience nausea, vomiting, paleness, pain in the pelvic area, lower back pain, or even leg pain.

What Are the Symptoms of Endometriosis?

Endometriosis symptoms can be different in each individual; however, some of the most common symptoms for endometriosis may include:
- Pain can be quite relevant when you are having menstrual cramps and can be felt more so in the abdomen or the back.
- Pain during in*******se.

Fertility issues.

How Often Should I Have a Well-Woman Exam?

The frequency of well-woman exams can vary depending on your age, health history, and individual risk factors. Generally, most women should start scheduling yearly exams in their early twenties. These annual visits allow for preventive care, early detection of potential health issues, and open communication with your doctor about any concerns you might have.

However, this yearly schedule might not be the same for everyone. Women with certain risk factors like a family history of breast cancer or a personal history of irregular periods might require more frequent checkups. Additionally, as women enter their forties, recommendations for screenings like mammograms become more important. Discussing your needs and risk factors with your doctor will help determine the most appropriate well-woman exam schedule.

What Is Meant by Menstrual Irregularity?

Menstrual irregularity is when the length of the cycle is more than 35 days, or if the duration varies. A period, or menstruation, is the part of the menstrual cycle in which the endometrium, which is the lining of the uterus, is shed.

Sometimes, irregular periods can be caused by some medicines, exercising too much, having a very low or high body weight, or not eating enough calories. Hormone imbalances can also cause irregular periods.

What are the Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?

Menopause brings hormonal changes, sometimes causing uncomfortable symptoms. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be a helpful option. Here's why:

Taming the Flames: Hot flashes and night sweats are common menopause woes. HRT can significantly reduce these bothersome symptoms, offering much-needed relief and improving your sleep quality.

Intimacy Matters: Vaginal dryness can impact s*xual health. HRT can help restore moisture and lubrication, promoting a more comfortable and enjoyable s*x life.

Bone Basics: HRT helps prevent bone loss, a risk factor for osteoporosis, especially important for long-term bone health.

Beyond Relief: Some studies suggest HRT might offer benefits for brain health and even reduce the risk of heart disease in some women.

Remember: HRT isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits to see if it's right for you. There are different types of HRT, and finding the right fit can significantly improve your quality of life during menopause.

What Is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is an X-ray image of the breast that doctors use to look for and detect early signs of breast disease in women who either have breast problems, such as a lump, pain, or ni**le discharge, or for women who have no breast issues. A mammogram can't prove that an abnormal area in the breast is cancerous, but if it raises a significant concern, tissue will be removed and analyzed in a biopsy.

Why Would I Need a Hysterectomy?

You may need a hysterectomy if you have one of the following:

- Uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths in the wall of the uterus. In some women, they cause pain or heavy bleeding.

- Heavy or unusual va**nal bleeding. Changes in hormone levels, infection, cancer, or fibroids can cause heavy, prolonged bleeding.

- Uterine prolapse. This is when the uterus slips from its usual place down into the va**na. This is more common in women who had several va**nal births, but it can also happen after menopause or because of obesity. Prolapse can lead to urinary and bowel problems and pelvic pressure.

- Endometriosis. Endometriosis happens when the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside of the uterus on the ovaries where it doesn't belong. This can cause severe pain and bleeding between periods.

- Adenomyosis. In this condition, the tissue that lines the uterus grows inside the walls of the uterus where it doesn't belong. The uterine walls thicken and cause severe pain and heavy bleeding.

- Cancer (or precancer) of the uterus, o***y, cervix, or endometrium (the lining of the uterus). A hysterectomy may be the best option if you have cancer in one of these areas. Other treatment options may include chemotherapy and radiation. Your doctor will talk with you about the type of cancer you have and how advanced it is.

What Happens during a Mammogram?

After un******ng from the waist up and taking off any necklaces, a technician will give you a smock or gown that ties in the front. Depending on the testing facility, you may either stand or sit while the images are taken.

Each breast fits onto a flat X-ray plate. A compressor will then push the breast down to flatten the tissue. This provides a clearer picture of the breast. You might have to hold your breath for each picture. You may feel a small amount of pressure or discomfort, but it's usually very brief.

During the process, your doctor will review the images as they are made. They may order additional images that show different views if something's unclear or needs further attention. This happens quite frequently and is considered routine.

Digital mammograms are sometimes used if they're available. These are especially helpful if you're younger than 50 years old. People in this age group typically have denser breasts compared with older adults.

A digital mammogram transforms the X-ray into an electronic picture of the breast that saves onto a computer. Images are immediately visible, so your radiologist doesn't have to wait for the images.

The computer can also help your doctor see images that might not have been very visible on a regular mammogram.

What Are the Main Causes of UTI's?

Urinary tract infections, or UTIs for short, are common infections caused by the presence of bacteria in the urinary tract and bladder. The urinary system is built to prevent bacteria from entering through the urethra, but sometimes the defense mechanisms fail and the bacteria can enter. Urinary tract infections are more common in women than in men and can be caused by:

An infection in the bladder, known as cystitis. Common causes are E. coli, which can be found in the gastrointestinal tract. It can also be caused by s*xual in*******se or simply due to how a woman's anatomy is, specifically the close proximity of the urethra and a**s, as well as between the urethral opening and the bladder.

An infection in the urethra, commonly known as urethritis. This happens when the GI bacteria spread from the a**s, forward to the va**na, often due to a back-to-front wiping technique. Sexually transmitted infections can also cause urethritis, such as herpes, gonorrhea, mycoplasma, and chlamydia.

If you suspect that you might have a urinary tract infection, know that treatment is available.

What Are the Causes of PMS?

The exact causes of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) are not entirely understood, but several factors seem to contribute. Hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle appear to play a significant role. What Is an Ovarian Cystectomy?

An ovarian cystectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove cysts that develop on the ovaries. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form due to various factors, such as hormonal imbalances and ovulation-related issues. While some cysts can be harmless, others will grow larger and cause significant discomfort, prompting medical intervention.

In an ovarian cystectomy, a skilled surgeon carefully removes the cyst while preserving the healthy ovarian tissue. This procedure can be performed using minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopy, which involves small incisions and specialized tools. In other cases, an open surgery approach will be required.

This surgery aims to relieve symptoms, prevent complications, and preserve ovarian function. Recovery time varies depending on the type and size of the cyst, as well as the chosen surgical approach. If you're experiencing symptoms related to ovarian cysts, it's recommended to consult a medical professional to determine the best course of action for your situation.

What Are Uterine Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are abnormal growths that develop in or on a woman's uterus. Sometimes these tumors become quite large and cause severe abdominal pain and heavy periods. In other cases, they cause no signs or symptoms at all. The growths are typically benign, or non-cancerous, and their cause is unknown. Uterine fibroids can range from harmless and unnoticeable to problematic and difficult to manage. Large fibroids can cause a variety of symptoms, and if left untreated, they can continue to grow in both size and number, causing worsening symptoms and pain. In addition to worsening symptoms, untreated fibroids can also cause bladder incontinence and increase one's risk of infertility. As such, if you have uterine fibroids that are causing you significant pain or adverse symptoms, you should have them treated to avoid further complications.
