The Carver Museum, Cultural & Genealogy Center is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and exhibition of African American history & family research.

The Carver Museum & Cultural Center is a free museum, dedicated to the collection, preservation, and exhibition of African American history and culture. The Genealogy Center is an extension of the Carver Museum and Cultural Center and acts as a public resource for learning about family history. The Carver Museum and Geneology Center are currently open to the public. Entrance is free and walk-ins are available. Masks are required for entry.

Join residency artist Corey De’Juan Sherrard Jr. for a jazz concert on July 25, 2024 from 7-9pm! With the intent of showcasing the spirit of jazz and creating a living example of the importance of jazz for the agency of Black life, Corey De’Juan Sherrard Jr. will be performing in a quartet alongside local musicians representing the East Austin Creative Coalition. Join us at the George Washington Carver Museum on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 from 2:30 -4:30 P.M. for a remembrance ceremony as we honor our ancestors and come together in solidarity. On Juneteenth proper, we gather in unity to honor victims of police violence in Texas, and create a safe space for communal mourning and grieving as it relates to the ongoing fight for Black liberation. We invite the community to gather in the museum lobby to help elevate the spirit of our fallen sisters, brothers, and non-binary community members, with a special portion of our program dedicated to the the victims involved in the Round Rock Juneteenth shooting. Join us in song, prayer, and meditation as we honor our Black ancestors and gather our strength to continue doing the work to liberate our communities.

Miss Juneteenth is a 2020 American drama film written and directed by Channing Godfrey Peoples and starring Nicole Beharie, Kendrick Sampson, and Alexis Chikaeze. The plot follows a single mom and former teen beauty queen who enters her daughter into the local Miss Juneteenth pageant. The film premiered at Sundance in January 2020, and was released via video on demand on June 19, 2020, coinciding with the 155th anniversary of the historically Black holiday which originated in the south eastern United States.

Introducing our closing speaker, Zimbabwean-American writer and activist, Dr. Zoé Samudzi! Join us on Wednesday, June 19th, at 12:00 PM for a conversation with Dr. Samudzi, about the war in Gaza, genocide, and geopolitics, facilitated by Lauren LLuveras, Doctoral Candidate in the Black Studies Department at UT Austin.

Dr. Zoé Samudzi is a writer and critic whose work has appeared in Art in America, Artforum, Bookforum, The New Inquiry, The Architectural Review, The New Republic, the Funambulist, and other outlets. She is an associate editor with Parapraxis Magazine, a contributing writer at Jewish Currents, and co-author of As Black as Resistance: Finding the Conditions for Liberation (AK Press).

The George Washington Carver Free Your Mind Symposium is pulling out all the stops this year! Join us in the Boyd Vance Theatre on Tuesday, June 18 from 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM for a conversation with public scholar, Dr. Marlon M. Bailey. Hear Dr. Marlon Bailey's thoughts on Sexual Politics and Ballroom facilitated by Dr. Lyndon K. Gill, Black studies professor at UT Austin.

Dr. Bailey is a Black q***r theorist and critical/performance ethnographer who studies black LGBTQ cultural formations, sexual health, and HIV/AIDS prevention. In 2014, Dr. Bailey's book, "Bitch a Queens Up in Pumps: Gender, Performance, and Ballroom Culture in Detroit won the Alan Bray Memorial Book Prize, and was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Book Award in LGBT studies. He holds a PhD in African Diaspora Studies with a Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from the Department of African American Studies and Gender and Women's Studies respectively from the University of California, Berkeley.

The Carver is proud to announce a new edition to our educational programming at this year's Stay Black & Live Juneteenth Celebration! Introduction the Joyous Juneteenth Chess Classic hosted by ! This tournament is open to player ages 7-99 years old, but participation is limited to 32 players, so get to the Carver at 11:30 A.M. sharp to register in person!

Sponsored by the ATX Carver foundation and hosted by Coach Gabe with joyous tutoring. This vibrant and celebratory event combines the rich traditions of Juneteenth and the strategic game of chess for all generations to enjoy. This new edition to the educational portion of the Carver's Juneteen celebration strives not only to promote the game of chess, but also highlight the importance of freedom, equality and literacy. With its joyful atmosphere and competitive Spirit spirit! Prizes and trophies for first, second and third place winners.

But wait, there's more! We are also honored to announce that community partners and the Austin Buffalo Soldiers will be returning with interactive fun and learning, along with storytime, and hands-on arts and crafts with the Carver Education Team!

Our Vol. 3 cohort, taylor barnes, Nitashia Johnson, and Corey De’Juan Sherrard, Jr., will be discussing their experience during the residency, their inspiration for their body of work, and the collaborations that created the Carver’s most cohesive and ambitious residency group show to date.

We are so proud of our Small Black Museum Vol. 3 cohort! Endless thank yous to everyone who contributed to our most ambitious year yet: our residency mentors, professional development consultants, contributing writers, photo and video production team, opening reception attendees, residency alumni, and of course, our in-house Carver team 🖤

To be able to, as one of our curatorial mentors Betelhem Makonnen put it, "create, offer, and administer an arts residency program that truly benefits artists" in pursuit of our mission is one of the Carver's deepest honors. We are so blessed and grateful to do this work with and for our community.

And we're not done yet! SBMV3 is open until October 5, 2024. Our next public program is the artist talk facilitated by residency project manager, Regine Malibiran, on June 8 from 1-3pm. We'll also be opening up our garden from 3-6:30pm for an afternoon afterparty. See y'all there!
