My boy turns 18 this week. What a gift God gave me September 27th 2004 when this remarkable human came into the world. He’s smart, kind, wise, diplomatic, relaxed, strong, confident, independent, and a natural born leader. Wyatt, thanks for being the best example of God’s ability to perform miracles in my life. You have blessed me with your courage, inclusiveness and curiosity for all cultures. You have shown me that life is best spent in the moment and even though I’ve not always rallied behind all of your ideas, the times I have jumped in have been some of the greatest experiences of my life❤️ I’m so proud of WHO you are.

We hiked Crested Butte to Aspen this week. Took us 9 hours start to finish. Scrappy-Doo could have done it in 3.🐶 The most beautiful wildflowers I’ve ever seen.

This is my mom. She retires tomorrow. She is the middle of seven children. Her father died in a car accident when she was seven years old and she and her siblings went to live with her oldest sister when my mom was nine because my grandmother was not fit to take care of them. My mother has the work ethic of a pack mule. I've never seen anyone who can stretch a dollar further and she is the true definition of grit. She never let me feel sorry for myself and believed that pulling yourself up by your bootstraps is the way through anything. I remember not being able to count to 100 (or refusing to) and she figured out that I would count pennies if I got to keep them. She taught me how to master my ADHD by making associations, she literally tricked me into learning. She is the world's greatest teacher and taught me to never take no for an answer. She taught me that you don't get the things you don't ask for. She is the female version of Macgyver. My mother doesn't have a college degree but she could have been the CEO of any fortune 500 company. To say I'm proud of her is an understatement. She has made a very lucrative career for herself in the oil/gas pipeline business by honing her detective skills and her work ethic . Her company begged her not to leave. She could have named her salary if she stayed. I'm most proud of the way she has never stayed at a job that she didn't love. She believed life is too short to be miserable and that you should always be rewarded for hard work. She taught me to value my gifts and that what I have inside me is invaluable. I learned to believe in myself because she never gave up on any of us. She was not easy but she made the world easy for me. Thank you for giving me the gift of grit and for always going the extra mile for our family. I'm so proud to be your daughter. xo

We arrived in Italy on Monday morning after missing 3 of the four trains it took to get to our destination. No a/c on the train in 100 degree heat and no water. Wyatt kept telling me it was all about the journey, not the destination. He’s right. These summer trips with the boys are my favorite and I’m still in awe that two young men 26 and 28 years younger than me guide me around foreign countries in search of adventure. It’s the time when we are all on equal footing, none of us experts and each one of us discovering new terrain at the same time. Here we have little cell phone coverage and today the boys are taking the train to La Spezia to have an adventure of their own. I am sitting on my balcony praying that somehow seeing the world will give them the confidence to know that no situation in life is so difficult that it can’t be resolved by understanding the world is bigger than our limited experience (or the tip of our nose, as my mom always put it). Staring at the sea this morning I had the thought that I’m really just an insignificant speck in the vastness of the universe but it was countered by my next thought that I am an important part of God’s great creation. What we put out into the world comes back to us. How refreshing to know we aren’t as important in the ways we ‘think’ we are but hugely important given our individuality in the great painting. I’m grateful for my kids, my friends, my family and my life. I’m grateful when I’m reminded that I don’t have control over what life brings and I can’t receive the gifts when I’m fighting to be the captain. Being small compared to the world reminds me to let go and enjoy the moment and allow others freedom to be who they are. I hope my kids remember that when the journey becomes difficult it’s ALL part of the great adventure❤️
