“The truth is, none of us are free until everybody is free.” This quote from Maya Angelou simply scratches the surface of the meaning behind Juneteenth. Juneteenth National Independence Day, is celebrated to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States.

This holiday has especially strong ties here in Texas, as the freedom of some 250,000 slaves on June 19, 1865 is what instigated what is now known as Juneteenth. We thank trailblazers such as Opal Lee for continuing to spread the truth on this holiday’s origins until it became recognized as a federal holiday.
