While pain is common, fractures in children can sometimes show NO symptoms. Look for swelling, bruising, or trouble using the limb.

May is National Bicycle Safety Month, and at CTPO, we want to help little riders get rolling with confidence!

Here are some kid-approved safety tips for your tiny cyclist:

Helmet Hero: Pick a cool helmet together that they'll love to wear! It's the #1 way to stay safe.
Bike Check-Up: Make sure their bike is in tip-top shape with brakes, tires, and reflectors ready to go.
Join Them: Don’t let them go alone, ensure their safety by joining their rides.
Bright Like a Butterfly: Gear up in bright colors and reflective stickers to be seen easily.

Bonus Tip: Start on sidewalks or bike paths for younger riders. Let them build confidence before hitting the streets.

Let's keep the ride safe and fun this May! We want to see all those happy smiles.

Kaye Wilkins is considered one of the godfathers of pediatric orthopaedic care, and he truly wrote the book on the management of pediatric fractures. Eight years ago, the Kaye Wilkins Pediatric Fracture Conference was started and it was named after Dr. Wilkins to promote best practices in the care of pediatric fractures and as a way to continue to espouse the lessons that Dr. Wilkins taught so many of those in the field. We were fortunate enough to have Dr. Wilkins attend the first 7 of these conferences. Dr. Wilkins unfortunately passed away last November and this year’s conference was the first held without him in attendance. To honor Dr. Wilkin's legacy and his lifelong contribution to the care and management of children with orthopedic conditions, Dr. Matthew Schmitz from San Antonio memorialized Dr. Wilkins during the conference and the conference faculty were able to share their memories of Kaye and gratitude for his lessons with Dr. Wilkins's wife and children who attended the conference.

This past weekend the 8th annual Kaye Wilkins Pediatric Fracture Conference was held, with attendees from over 10 institutions (including CTPO) and the greater community including practicing physicians, fellows, and residents. The conference featured a number of lectures on the proper management of pediatric fractures, discussion of complex and interesting cases, and a hands-on workshop with experts in pediatric fracture management on the basics of fracture care. The keynote speaker was Dr. Suken Shah from the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware, who is regarded as a well-respected thought leader in the field of pediatric spinal deformities and scoliosis. He was also CTPO’s Dr. Kaufman and Dr. Heydemann's fellowship director during their last year of training.

Members of CTPO leadership recently attended the annual PRiSM (Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine) meeting at Disneyland. CTPO’s Dr. Matthew Ellington and Physical Therapist Kevin McHorse are members of PRiSM and are heavily involved in multiple of their Research Interest Groups, including research on knee ligaments, patellofemoral instability, shoulder instability, and ‘spondy’.
