OCTOBER 3RD AT 6:30 PM: Join us for a captivating performance featuring soprano Mandy Brown & pianist Tatiana Loisha as they delve into the history of witch stereotypes and the persecution of women labeled as witches. This program will draw connections to the library’s extensive collections on witchcraft & herbalism, tracing the evolution of witch stereotypes and reconciling these inaccuracies with the true stories of these women—unique individuals who were often healers and sages.
For one night only, rare books and manuscripts from the library’s collections on witchcraft and herbalism will be on display. Enjoy an evening of music, history, and literature in one of the world's most beautiful libraries!
This event is free and advance registration is strongly encouraged.
Seats for registered attendees will be held until 6:20pm and then will be released for open seating. A standby line will begin at 5pm and let additional guests into the library if seats are available after 6:20pm. We encourage patrons without advance registration to join the standby line. Most standby patrons can be accommodated.

SEPTEMBER 13TH AT 12 PM: Join Joseph Plaster, archivist Tonika Berkley, and 2023 Tabb Center Fellow Nicoletta Darita de la Brown for Lunch with the Libraries to discuss the exhibition "Be(longing): Unveiling the Imprint of Black Women Hidden in Plain Sight".
Inspired by her explorations with archival materials related to Ethel Ennis, Billie Holiday, African American real photo postcards, and other special collections at the Johns Hopkins Sheridan Libraries, de la Brown's exhibition contained video, photographic self-portraits, and site-specific performances which addressed culturally significant and deeply introspective questions: How many Black women are living in archives? Last week, the Open Source Programs Office (OSPO) led a focus group on JHU’s SciServer, the IDIES-based, collaborative, data-driven science platform. The session gathered valuable user insights on data-driven research practices at JHU and the specific applications of SciServer.
The focus group marks an important step in SciServer’s evolution towards becoming an open-source, community-led platform. By involving researchers and users directly, we’re ensuring that SciServer’s future development aligns closely with the needs of the scientific community.
The OSPO is happy to support open source projects across campus, offering assistance with sustainability planning, strategic development, value proposition creation, and more. If you’re working on an open source projects at JHU, we’re here to help you advance and sustain those initiatives.
We’re grateful to all the focus group participants for their input, and look forward to continuing our great work together.
