We're six months into the construction and rehabilitation project at the Korean War Veterans Memorial and a lot has already been accomplished. The 19 stainless steel statues were refinished and the Field of Service around them is awaiting the installation of new lighting and landscaping. Behind the construction fence, the foundation for the new circular plaza is nearing completion. In the following phases, construction of the new Wall of Remembrance will proceed on the plaza and include the names of 36,574 American servicemen and more than 7,200 members of the Korean Augmentation to the United States Army who gave their lives defending the people of South Korea. We're looking forward to completing the project next year.

Preservation And Archaeology In Maryland's Backyards We hear how Preservation Maryland’s is restoring a tiny log cabin in a historic African-American neighborhood in Hagerstown. Plus, a local relic hunter tells us about the treasure found in century-old trash.
Porch Restoration at Historic London Town.
Just because London Town is closed for the holidays doesn't mean that there isn't work going on behind the scenes. Worcester-Eisenbrandt has been wrapping up work repairing the riverside porch of the historic William Brown House, c.1760. Thank you to everyone who contributed to last year's Repair the Porch fund to make this possible!

Vestibule Restoration Project Senior Preservationist Jeff Larry walks the viewer through the ongoing restoration of the Cottage vestibule and highlights some exciting recent discoveries.
Congratulations to Pavel Kudelich, Amy Hollis, Stephen Hollis, and Juan Sanchez-Bonilla for their work on replicating the garlands on the cupola of the Historic Post Office in Annapolis. They are the recipients of a 2019 Craftsmanship Award from the Baltimore Building Congress and Exchange.
After WEI restored the woodwork on the cupola, Pavel sculpted a new model using the existing remnants of the damaged garlands. Stephen cast the replicas, and joined Amy and Juan in gilding the four final pieces.
Congratulations to our mill shop carpenters, Tim Eastman and Tim Schwind, Jr., as well as the field team for their work at the Maryland School for the Blind. They are the recipients of a 2019 Craftsmanship Award from the Baltimore Building Congress & Exchange.
They painstakingly replicated 170 wood windows, using custom molding profiles and various window sizes and layouts. You can see how large an average window is from the model standing right behind them!
Congratulations to Naser Husadzinovic, John Minihane, and the entire team who worked on dismantling and restoring this fountain at Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues in Washington, D.C. This project won a 2019 Craftsmanship Award from the Baltimore Building Congress & Exchange.
All the bronze segments and every stone had to be removed to replace the concrete and waterproofing beneath. New lighting and plumbing was installed while the fountain was in a warehouse in Landover, but all the pipes had to line up and each spotlight had to point exactly at the zodiac signs when the fountain was reassembled. And anyone who's tried to repackage something in its original box knows how difficult that can be!
The final task was installing the exposed-aggregate surface to look like the original. A team of 10 installers and 5 mixers worked for a week, mixing small batches of concrete and hand placing small stones at the bottom of a 1000-sf basin.
Here's a before-and-after detail of our work in the Pennsylvania Foyer of the D.A.R. Museum in Washington, DC. We're returning the room to its historic color scheme.
