Second Manassas 08/29/2024

On this day, August 29, in 1862, Union General John Pope launched a series of assaults against Confederate General Andrew Jackson's position along an unfinished railroad grade near Manassas, Virginia. The attacks were repulsed with heavy losses on both sides. Around midday, Confederate General James Longstreet arrived at the battle and took position on Jackson's right flank. On August 30, General Pope renewed his assaults and Longstreet's counterattacked with his 25,000 men in the largest simultaneous mass assault of the war. The Union left flank was destroyed and the army was driven back to Bull Run. Only a well executed Union rear guard action prevented a replay of the First Manassas defeat. This Confederate victory at the battle of Second Bull Run emboldened General Lee to start making plans to move into Maryland. To learn more about this battle and all the battles of the Civil War, we invite you to visit our world class Civil War Museum in Bardstown, KY! We hope to see you soon.
