Vermont’s adult learning centers provide critical skills for all As part of national Adult Education and Literacy Week, local advocates are spotlighting the work of 17 learning centers across the state that provide help to around 1,800 adults each year.
September 18 – 22 marks Adult Education and Literacy Week. Adult learners come from all walks of life, seeking the assets that will better their lives and open doors in the family, community, careers, and further education.
Our student body at CVABE is 39% BIPOC and over 51% have at least one disability. Statistically, these two demographics are at the highest risk of dropping out of school and poverty. Over 100 of our students are English Language Learners.
“For so long my mentality had been that because I had learning disabilities, I couldn’t learn…At CVABE I learned how to learn.” Student after student of our gains perhaps the most important asset: hope!
Adult education is for almost anyone out of school, age 16+ who wants to improve skills and get ahead. We also have a new Workforce Development program that yields specific certifications in high demand areas, from customer service skills to technology to paraprofessionals.
On this Adult Education and Literacy Week we thank and honor our students for allowing us the opportunity to provide those assets. We thank our 74 volunteers for their over 3,000 of service. We thank our donors for supporting our students’ efforts.

We'd like to share with you this amazing oil painting a former student created as a symbol of their journey at CVABE. In their words:
“This [oil] painting symbolizes my journey in school. At first there was a lot of trial and error. There were many mistakes and redos, but I still pushed onwards. I had anxiety and self-doubt, and I didn't know if I would finish. I didn't give up when it got hard, and tutorials were a great teacher that guided me along the way. In the end I was able to finish it, and it is a work of art. It's something I can be proud of.”
We are proud of each and every one of our amazing students!
Thank you to Mascoma Bank for your continued support of our students and mission. We couldn't do it without you!
All CVABE learning centers will be closed 12/23, 12/26, and 1/2. We wish our entire learning community a safe and happy Holiday season.
