Helix Community Schools is pleased to welcome Erica P. Jackson as the founding elementary school principal of Helix Aviation Academy. Jackson will oversee the addition of the first class of kindergartners and first graders starting in August at its new location, 7701 Plank Road, in Baton Rouge. She will also be responsible for overseeing the expansion of the elementary school program, recruitment and retention and academic success. She brings a wealth of expertise as a leader in education with more than 24 years of experience. Jackson joined Helix last year as the assistant principal at Helix Business Park which is part of Helix Mentorship Academy. Before that, she served as the principal of St. Isidore Catholic School and Redemptorist St. Gerard. She also previously served as the assistant principal of Franciscan High School. She also previously served as the assistant principal of Franciscan High School. She earned a bachelor's and master’s degree in educational leadership from Southern University. She also received an educational specialist degree in K-12 leadership from Grand Canyon University.

Helix Community Schools is proud to welcome Karen Hamilton as the founding high school principal of Helix Aviation Academy. Hamilton will oversee the new high school division, which includes the first class of ninth graders who start in August at the new campus. In her new role, Hamilton will also be responsible for the expansion of the high school program, recruitment and retention and academic success. With seventeen years of experience in education, she is a renowned advocate for student growth, classroom culture, and student data analysis. She most recently served as the high school instructional coach and 11th grade level lead at Collegiate Academies in Baton Rouge. Hamilton has a bachelor's degree from the University of Memphis and a master's degree from Cumberland University. Welcome to our team!

SWIM LESSONS - Helix Legal Academy and other Helix Community Schools students and friends are enjoying swimming lessons at the Exxonmobil YMCA. Helix Community Schools announces acquisition of IDEA University Prep’s Plank Road campus facilities

BATON ROUGE, La. (June 24, 2024) – Helix Community Schools is excited to announce the acquisition of IDEA University Prep’s (UP) Plank Road campus facilities. Located at 7701 Plank Road, the campus will become part of Helix Aviation Academy which is the only public school in the state located on an airport (Baton Rouge Metro Airport) and features a curriculum focused on careers in aviation, space exploration, and cyber technology.

Additionally, Helix Aviation will be expanding this fall to launch its new high school and elementary school division. Helix Aviation will now offer kindergarten and first grade and sixth through ninth grade. It will open in August just in time for the start of the school year.

Helix will continue to utilize its airport campus to launch its much-anticipated high school flight program. This program will allow students from Helix Mentorship STEAM Academy and Helix Aviation to engage in ground school classes and actual flight training led by its new certified flight instructor, Mr. Ezzie Smith. The airport campus will remain a critical part of Helix’s unique educational offerings, linking classroom learning with real-world aviation experience.

“We are committed to providing an innovative educational experience for all students to help prepare them for success in and out of the classroom and this is a great opportunity to serve even more families in the Baton Rouge community,” said Preston Castille, president and CEO of Helix Community Schools. “We already have a strong presence in North Baton Rouge so this will allow us to continue to make a positive impact on our youth, our families and our community as a whole.”

The new campus features a state-of-the-art, two-story building complete with a gymnasium and cafeteria along with a soccer field and playground.

Helix Mentorship also acquired Franciscan High School’s (Cristo Rey) facilities, students and faculty last summer. As part of the acquisition, Helix Mentorship added Franciscan’s Corporate Work Study Program to its curriculum. Helix Mentorship is located in downtown Baton Rouge.

LIVING LEGEND: Helix Legal Academy Gladiators (from left to right) - Football Coach Lee Slan and football players Joshua Brown and Chance Johnson - recently participated in NFL Hall of Famer Doug Williams' annual Elite Football Camp at Memorial Stadium in Baton Rouge. The students learned various skills and competed against other students. Coach Slan served as a volunteer, working with the participants in first through sixth grades. Williams, a Zachary native, was the first Black quarterback to start in a Super Bowl.
