It's the last day for WAIVED FEES for all available spayed/neutered dogs, and that includes our August! August is a 3 year old, female, terrier mix who could spend all day rolling in the grass and relaxing on her back just watching the clouds pass if she could. This sweet girl is very friendly, does very well on leash and appears to be house trained. She took treats very gently and seemed to know a few basic commands but was much more interested in asking for belly rubs and enjoying the sun for a stretch. Maybe you could join her? She's got a nice spot of grass next to her... just lay down for a bit, slow your day. It's Sunday, take a breather. That's nice isn't it?

Did you know we have several puppies ready to be adopted? Say hello to Coconut! Coconut is a 2 month old, female, Labrador Retriever mix who has already had her spay surgery so she is available for waived adoption fees though Sunday! Coconut is very sweet and like most puppies her age she will need help learning potty training and leash manners so she can grow up to be the best dog she can be! Just look at he sweet face!

We're still waiving fees for all available spayed/neutered dogs all weekend long, so every will be an adoptable candidate! Starting off today with Captain Crunch! Captain Crunch came to us as stray with a bad case of demodex (skin parasites) and severely malnourished. Under our care and with the help of a foster he's been treated for the demodex and is skin is slowly starting the healing process, he's also been able to put on some weight! He could still stand to gain a few more pounds but he's through the hardest part of his treatment and is looking for his forever home where he can keep getting healthy and work on growing his fur back. We estimate Captain Crunch is approximately a year old. He's done well getting used to walking on a leash, stays close to you and has a sweet little bounce in his step. Captain Crunch has a very sweet personality and loves affection and pets often leaning in for a little reassurance and love.

We have 85 dogs in unacceptable housing at our facility. We have been operating above our capacity for care for far too long and we cannot keep animals that we cannot properly care for. We are calling for a minimum of 90 dogs to leave our shelter by Sunday and are waiving adoption fees for ALL available spayed/neutered dogs at the shelter to assist in that goal.

Time for your afternoon dose of happiness, say hello to our Rhino! Rhino is a 1-2 year old Cane Corso mix who was brought in by a member of the community who found him as a stray so we don't know his exact age. Rhino has a very sweet personality and is incredibly friendly. His finder has cats that Rhino got along well with, he's friendly with kids wanting affection and eager to please. Rhino has gotten along well with other dogs here as well, though he's not a fan of thunderstorms but we can't blame him for that. Thunderstorms can be scary even for humans! Rhino is a certified good boy and overall well mannered pup. He's about 64 lbs currently, and we're not sure he's done growing just yet so a home comfortable for a big dog is recommended.

Say hello to our morning Jack! Jack is a 1.5 year old mixed breed of all things cute. He's about 28 lbs and won't be getting much bigger but has a heart of a giant. You might have seen him on BR Proud this week, Jack was highly entertaining with his spurts of puppy energy and loves to play tug, adores pets and snuggles and is down adventuring anywhere with you! He's easy to leash and stays near you for the most part, he does need to work on potty training and basic commands but is very treat motivated! Once he gets consistent training in your home, we think he'll be a quick study.

Whisker Wednesday continues with Miss Charlotte! Charlotte is a beautiful 3 year old with grey and white fur, almost like a brindle pattern! Charlotte took a minute to get adjusted to being in the shelter but now she loves getting pets and snuggles. She keeps her kennel clean, has no problems using the litter box and can often be found just chilling and watching the world pass by from her kennel window.

Happy Whisker Wednesday! Say hello to Ares! Ares is a handsome 4 month old black and white cat who's curious playful nature is highly entertaining! He's a sweet boy who loves to pose for a photo and would love to bring his playful energy to your life! Say hello to Maxine and Ruby! $10 Tuesday continues with these 5 month old terrier mixes and absolutely beauties. Maxine and Ruby (green towel in her photos) are relatively shy ladies but love treats and become quite friendly when treats are shared. Being 5 months old, both are working on their leash manners and potty training and would benefit from finding their forever homes so they can be the awesome loving dogs we know they'll grow up to be! Maxine and Ruby can be adopted separately or together.

It's $10 Tuesday! All spayed/neutered pets are available for adoption today for only $10 and that includes our first of the day, Sheena! Sheena is a lovely 2 year old Shar-Pei who looks like she's just wrapped in velvet. This sweet girl was easy to leash and did pretty well on leash, though she did pull a bit until outside. Sheena is very treat motivated and appears to know a few basic commands and be eager to learn more. She also loved getting pets and scritches all over which is great because you can't help but want to pet her velvety fur! (especially on her head and ears!)

Do you love big dogs? Say hello to Dunkle! Dunkle is a 2 year old male Giant Schnauzer and is about as teddy bear cuddly as they come! At 55 lbs, this sweet boy walks very well on leash, didn't pull at all when getting walked outside for photos. When you kneel and he'll come sit next to you and lean in for hugs, which is easy to do as he's almost shoulder height in that position and he LOVES hugs! Dunkel does well with humans of all sizes, including kids, and is documented as doing well with cats and other dogs! He appears to be house trained and is the definition of a gentle giant.

In an effort to recycle old computer equipment, raise money for the Companion Animal Alliance, and help you relieve some stress, we’re holding the 1st Annual Sparkhound Smash-a-thon!

It's a cloudy Monday morning in Baton Rouge so let's start the week off right and add a little sunshine with a ! Today's Happy Tail comes from Haylie who adopted her cat Mabel from us in October of 2023. Haylie shares, "Mabel has changed my life in so many ways it’s hard to narrow it down. She has taught me the meaning of unconditional love, and has made me a better person. On days when it’s hard to get up, I will always get out of bed to play. I often wake up with her snuggling me and snoring like an engine. My windows are open far more often, and our balcony time together is precious. She’s a pain in my butt, and my soul cat at the same time. Mabel can’t really meow, so she has a raspy little broken voice and it’s the cutest thing ever. She also puts like a Jet about to take off. She loves playing with spring toys, but her favorite thing to play with is the strings from the blinds. She also likes biting toes. When someone sneezes, she always meows to say bless you."

Sassafras is a 9 year old female Siamese mix with beautiful blue eyes and a very sweet personality. She's a bit shy at first when in a new place, likes to hide in cat boxes or cubbies until she gets comfortable but she has no problem interacting while in her smaller spaces. She loves getting scratches and pets, is often rubbing against the brush toy in our Catio and just being the adorable little queen she is.

Say hello to our Saturday Jim! Jim is a 2 year old terrier mix and full on CUDDLE BUG. If you sit on the floor he will lean against you and give you what we can only describe as one of the best hugs we have ever received from human or animal. Coming from us, and we'd like to think of our selves as gold medalists in hugging animals... that's high praise! Sweet Jim may be all love but he does need to work on his leash manners, he gets excited about going outside and he can be a bit of a puller. He wants all the pets and loves to sniff around the grass enjoying the sunshine, and appears to be house trained.

It's National Black Cat Appreciation Day and we just HAVE to share a few of our adoptable black cats with you! Did you know black is the most dominant fur color for cats? We won't get into the whole biology of it but something that awesome can hardly be considered unlucky. Often associated with Halloween and all things spooky season, black cats are often seen as protectors and guides in folklore and many different cultures. How cool is that? We love our black cats from their adorable faces to their floofy tails! Come see them for yourself, we're open until 6pm today!

💟FOSTER FRIDAY💟 continues with R***r! R***r is a 3 year old Australian Cattle Dog who loves to play outside chasing birds and bugs until he’s worn out and wants to nap inside the rest of the day. He’s spunky and playful, full of personality. He loves to cuddle and be the center of attention. We think R***r would do best in any home where he will get lots of attention and cuddles. He needs lots of outdoor space, definitely fenced in. He has not spent a lot of time around children, but we could see him enjoying kids to play with outside.

Happy 💟FOSTER FRIDAY💟, all day we'll be sharing some of our foster animals who are not currently in the shelter but available for adoption! First up we have PATCHES! This active boy is bursting with love and is ready to find his forever home! At about three years old, Patches is a staff favorite at CAA and a familiar face at The Dog Stop, where he enjoys playful romps with other dogs who can match his lively spirit. In his foster home, Patches has been getting along great with his four-legged siblings! He loves running around the yard, chewing on nylabones, and staying close to his people. Patches is housetrained, kennel trained, and walks beautifully on a leash. If you're looking for a friendly, active companion, Patches might be the perfect fit for you!

Patches is currently in foster care outside of the shelter. If you are interested in learning more or meeting Patches, please complete a Foster Program Adoption Survey through the link in our bio!

Sometimes Foster Friday means helping find emergency foster care as well!

We are putting the call out for short term (minimum 2 weeks) foster care for puppies currently in our care that are 6 months and under. Please note: These are NOT puppies that are currently available for adoption as they have not had their spay/neuter surgeries but they would benefit from foster placement due to our limited capacity for care here at the shelter until they are available for adoption. We also have 2 litters of puppies still with their momma who could use a foster home where momma does most of the work, they just need a place to care for them.

We will provide kennels, food, supplies, etc. all you need to do is either reach out to [email protected] or just come by the shelter with a valid ID. We are open today until 6pm, or you can come by for emergency foster pick up through the weekend.

We've got one more for your Thursday afternoon, say hello to Cider! Cider is a 3 year old, male, hound mix who believes with his whole heart that he can use his ears to fly and that there isn't a being on earth he doesn't want to be friends with. This sweet boy gets excited to meet new people but still does very well on leash not letting his wiggles get the best of him. He loves treats and toys, is eager for affection and took time to say a friendly gentle hello to each human of all sizes he passed along the way. Cider doesn't seem to know many commands but he's eager to learn and he appears to have some potty training.

As the open intake shelter for the parish we get strays of all kinds, including pigs! We have several farm pigs that came as strays and we are having trouble finding a rescue for. So, do you have a farm/pasture/barn/appropriate living area for a pig? They are available for adoption, fees would be $50. We aren't pig specialists so unfortunately we can't tell you breed or anything more specific than gender at this time - we have both males and females available, some are pictured here.

If you are interested in adopting any of our pigs, come to the shelter and our amazing front desk staff will be able to take you back to our pasture area and barn where they are currently being held.

Good Morning and Happy Thursday! Let's get right to the cuteness shall we? Our first today is Kira! Kira is a female, year old retriever mix who LOVES being outside. We think she was an outdoor dog in her former living situation as she is quite timid in her kennel but becomes a goofy spirited sweetheart when she's outside. She does pretty well on leash but could use some polish. Got very excited when she realized she was headed outside and had some zoomies pulling on the leash. Miss Kira appears to be house trained and is a very sweet girl. She loves treats and toys, anything that has to do with playtime and would be best joining an active household. She has some grasp of basic commands, and interestingly enough understands more commands in Spanish! Kira does well with other dogs similar in size, but absolutely does NOT like cats.

Can't make it to the shelter? We'll be at the PetSmart on Millerville road every Saturday from 2-5pm with a few CAA pets looking for their forever homes! Plus until Sept 10th, all our off-site adoptions (including PetSmart) will have pets that are available for adoption with WAIVED FEES only during the event!

We have one more for your Whisker Wednesday entertainment - say hello to Ivy! Ivy is a year old female tuxedo cat who has a phenomenal purr and loves to be the center of attention. She's been known to be a bit territorial of her person when other animals are around so we recommend a home where she is the only pet and can get all the attention she desires. As you can see Miss Ivy can be quite playful and adorable but like most cats equally mischievous and she'll let you know when she's had enough attention and when she'd like more. She'd likely be better with older kids than younger for this same reason, but has done well with kids in general.

Whisker Wednesday continues with Anchovy! Anchovy is a 3 month old male who loves to snuggle like the sweet baby he is. When he's not trying to be held he's playing with wand toys or exploring his surroundings with adorable curiosity. Anchovy is great with other cats and has the softest fluffy fur you just can't help but want to pick him up and listen to him purr in happiness.

Happy Whisker Wednesday and say hello to the gloriously affectionate Moo! Moo is a lovely 3 year old female Siamese mix who wants nothing more than to rub up against you and soak up all the love she can get. She adores pets of all kind, and even likes getting affection while she's eating. She's a multi-tasker! It was difficult to take photos of her because all she wanted to do was snuggle and rub up against the camera so we of course had to take the time to give her all the scritches and rubs she wanted. She's a very sweet girl!
