Magic Happens Rabbit Rescue

Make a difference in somebunny's life - adopt a rescued rabbit! MHRR is a group of volunteers and foster homes in and around the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area.

Rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small critters come from animal control agencies, are strays, dumps at pet stores or vet clinics, or are surrendered by individuals/families who can no longer care for their pets. We also visit classrooms and scout meetings to teach little ones about rabbit care when we are able. We strive to be of service to our community by offering boarding, nail trims, and answe

We put in a couple more hours in the Bungalow this Sunday! We found more termite damage in a stud behind the main wall where the habitats were, that we would have never found if not for tearing it down. 😞 Thankfully not as extensive as the other areas so far. Over half the interior walls came down (it took a lot to pry them off after removing all the screws) and 7 contractor bags of insulation went to the curb. We unfortunately had another hiccup in the debris removal process - half of a nearby pecan tree fell on the utility trailer! It was already loaded with the previous weekend's debris and is now inaccessible until the tree can be cleared. As always, we will keep chugging along with whatever manpower (and power tools) we can get and we will get there eventually!

We brought some of our fuzzy bunnies (and more!) to our friends at the BREC Bluebonnet Swamp today for their girls week daycamp. We talked about how bunnies communicate, how their bodies try to stay cool when it's warm, how they need to keep moving and not sit in a cage all day, as well as some of the differences between wild & domestic bunnies. Then they got to pet 6 different buns that Wendy & Ashley brought plus see some of the show-and-tell items.

Bungalow Demolition: Day 2 is complete (and hopefully all volunteers are now back home in the a/c and showered!). 🥵
Today we removed all habitat frames, lining, back wall mylar sheeting, plus a couple more wall panels and insulation. In 2 weeks we will have another work day to finish up removing the interior wall panels, ceiling panels, insulation, and maybe more! 💪🐰

Have a safe & hoppy 4th!

A few of the volunteers gathered this wknd to take out all of the supplies, habitats, appliances, cabinets, etc. We also started taking down a few of the wall and ceiling panels and sure enough, more termite damage was found (as suspected). A HUGE thank you to all those who worked so hard in the heat and to those who brought us some sweet watermelon to cool off with!! We will have another work day in 2 weeks to start demolishing the rest of the interior. 🍉 🥵 💪 🐰

Ninja has left the building! He just got picked up by a wonderful new foster ❤️ Which means we are ready to start demo! We have raised about 16k out of 25k needed to get a bit of a bigger building, and to make sure we have enough funds to get a new building *and* continue caring for our current fosters. HUGE thank you to everyone who has donated, fostered, and shared our fundraisers to help get us to this point!!!

Now that the bungalow is empty of bunnies, we can begin demolition! After demo, next will be tree cutting and slab pouring and then comes the new and improved bungalow. 🤞 We are about 2/3 of the way with our fundraising goals. If we can get enough, we will expand the bungalow so that we can house more bunnies, and also have a canopy attached for shade and weather protection where we normally do grooming and litter box cleaning outside (we've had event canopies in the past but they were ruined by various storms and were a BIG pain to take down for hurricanes).

Our estimated goal right now is $25k for everything, and we are at $16k right now with a little more in the way.

If you haven't seen our previous posts: The Bungalow (our main foster 'home') is needing to be demo'd and rebuilt due to termite damage. Without the bungalow, it dramatically decreases the number of bunnies we can take in and house, and right now intakes are not possible as we are working on accommodating those in our care (with summer approaching and people going on vacation, adoptions often decrease and foster bunnies need to go to other fosters when their fosters are on vacation).

See comments below for ways you can donate, and look for future fundraisers like another online auction!

Hoppy Tail update!
Harlow is doing wonderful in her adoptive home. Her mom sent this update: She has been doing amazing, and she's so comfortable here. She flops over near me. She even slept with me. Snow is her best friend they cuddle, eat, and sleep together. They love being under my bed. Which is the rabbit den. She's crazy for treats and pellet food.

We love hearing updates from our adopted pets!

A big CONGRATS to Crush on her adoption today!!! Crush was originally dumped in a box at a pet store in Lafayette, then went to animal control, then to MHRR. While we tried to save her crush-ed leg, she ultimately had to have it amputated recently. Even with a little hiccup in healing, she got her all-clear from Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital today and is going HOME - not just to her foster home, as her foster mom decided she needed to stay forever! Congrats Crush - you've landed in the best spot possible!

Congratulations to our amazing volunteer Shadayah on her graduation from LSU! You may have seen her at Care Days and events like Boba & Bunnies or LSU SVM Open House. She just graduated with a Bachelor of Science in animal science (with a science & technology concentration) and a minor in agriculture. Help us congratulate her on this achievement!

Here are some photos of Capt. Teach, formerly known at MHRR as The Captain! He looks so much better than when he first arrived skinny and stained, and he is living a bunny's dream life! 😍
