Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Only fools despise wisdom and discipline. (Proverbs 1:7)

The Consequences of Po*******hy and Overcoming it's Hazards.

There are some rather unsettling statistics that have recently been made available to mental health providers concerning po*******hy. At the end of this article I will give some of this data and the sources. It is recommended that some internet software protection be on every computer. A few of the aforementioned statistics that are intended to get your attention also can encourage anyone experiencing this devastating temptation to seek help and to offer them an exit path. Covenant Eyes Internet Software Protection reports that 40 million Americans visit Internet p**n sites at least once a month. It is a substantial part of our economy with $13 billion in the US and $100 billion worldwide. One-third of all downloads each month and a quarter of all searches each day are po*******hy. A 2008 Nielson online survey showed that 25% of employees are accessing po*******hy.These are disturbing statistics when you understand that these percentages are also reflected in the Christian Community. It is one of the most common marital problems presented in a counseling environment. It is a sin that mimics marriage but not to a person. It often manifests addictive behavior. What is po*******hy?Po*******hy is defined as sexually explicit material - films, magazines, writings, photographs, art, or other materials that are intended to cause sexual arousal. It has spawned an industry that includes the production or sale of sexually explicit films, magazines, or other material which is delivered to the public by various means which has been exacerbated by the Internet. Many years of desensitization has moved sexually explicit language and visuals from the "dark places" to "primetime". There are other uncommon sources referred to in Scripture. Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. "Such sins have no place among God’s people. Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God." (Ephesians 5:3,4)NLT The Bible says we should avoid even a hint of these things. Paul identifies the hints and gives us the exit. "The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure" (1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT).Why is po*******hy so deadly? Just think with me for a moment. Po*******hy is readily accessible, it is perceived to be anonymous, and is affordable, (as in free). This is a big "hook".Patrick Carnes, In the Shadows of the Net, has identified 10 criteria used to determine if one has a sexual addiction:Loss of control - Clear behavior in which you do more than you intend or wantCompulsive - A pattern of out of control behavior over timeEfforts to stop - Repeated specific attempts to stop the behavior which fail Loss of time - Significant amounts of time lost doing/or recovering from behaviorPreoccupation - Obsessing about or because of the behaviorInability to fulfill obligations (life) - The behavior interferes with work, school, church, family and friendsContinuation despite consequences - Failure to stop behavior even though you have problems because of it (social, legal, financial, physical, relational)Escalation - need to make behavior even more intense, more frequent, or more riskyLosses - losing, limiting, or sacrificing valued parts of life such as hobbies, family, relationships, workWithdrawal - Stopping behavior causes considerable distress, anxiety, restlessness, irritability, or physical discomfortCarnes says that a minimum of three of these indicators are required for a diagnosis of sexual addiction. When someone presents this type of behavior they often manifest the core beliefs necessary for addictions. They believe they are a bad, unworthy person (shame); they believe, "no one would love me as I am" (rejection); "I can't get my needs met depending on others", (counterfeit solutions); "An intense relationship is my most important need" (control). This is referred to as an addictive cycle and needs to be broken. It is important to note that Jesus asked those struggling for purity, "Do you want to change?" (John 4:1-6)Are you willing to fight? You do have value. You are loved! Help is available. Don't give up, Look for help in the right place.God Bless you,Larry Walker, MED, LPC, CSAT, CRS, CARTBoard certified by American Psychotheraphy Association and American Association of Integrative Medicine.
