I’m not sure what women talk about in the locker rooms, but the gym I go to has a wealth of knowledge in it! When I was a firefighter & worked at the bambalance companies, my favorite patients were the elderly, & the kids.
The elderly had some experience, life lessons & wisdom to share with you, & they actually want to share it with you! Listen to them, when you get a chance!
The children have truth, an eagerness to learn & a purity about them. You can learn from both spectrums, but the people older than me, I’ve always admired. Especially our Veterans!
While I was working out, I stopped & bent down to make eye contact, with my hand out & said thank you for your service sir. He smiled back with a sense of pride, stood up a lil bit more straight, shook my hand & said you’re welcome.
I went back to continue my workout, & as I picked back up where I left off, I noticed this gentleman’s smile that he had towards his wife.
I noticed how his wife walked ahead of him to open up the door, & hold it open for him while he scooted along the way.
When I saw that I wanted to pay my respect again & see if we can take this picture together.
When I approached them I politely asked, & I reckon he couldn’t hear me. His wife spoke up & said you’ll have to ask him. He smiled & agreed, but as his wife took my phone to snap the pic, & she said wait a minute, this ain’t going to be used in any kind of negative way is it? I said no ma’am, I come from a long line of Veterans, my Pops was Navy & I respect our Veterans. She said ok, I hope you understand, I have to protect my husband! I said I understand, & definitely would t want to fight you! She smiled & took this picture. I thanked them both, & we went our separate ways.
That made me think for a minute. This guy fought during World War 2 he served in the Army & worked with our artillery, & our infantry. To me I consider this guy a badass, he fought for not just what’s right, he fought for our country, he fought for our freedoms & he fought for his comrades that were fighting right along side with him.
In case you don’t know your history, we won that war! That man came back home state side, & him & his wife are together today. From what I can tell they’re living a happy, healthy & I reckon a pretty prosperous life together.
Back then in those days people believed in the truth, giving your word & standing by it. Becoming a team, working together, figuring things out, he has her back & she has his back. I’m sure their life hasn’t been perfect, but then again, no ones is. Chances are they were together during the Great Depression, which also lead up to World War 2. In those days when things broke, you fixed them. You didn’t just throw them away, you appreciated them, took care of stuff, saved, planned, leaned with each other, grow together, & seek God together. They stood by each other no matter what!
Maybe I was born a lil bit too late. I was raised the majority of my childhood by Mammaw & Pappaw out in Farmersville, & Grandma & Grandpa on the East Side in Dayton.
Those two couples were married for over 60 plus years a piece. They took care of each other all the way till one of them went home to be with Jesus in Heaven. It was hard, but it was beautiful to see how much they love each other as I grew up, until their dying days.
I was with my Pappaw, & my Grandma both at different times holding their hands praying for them while each of them took their last breath. The lives they lived made an impact on me that I’ll never forget. I like to think that I’m built the way I am because of them.
Pappaw taught me a lot about being humble, being kind, being meek, working hard, being a provider, how to be a real southern gentleman, how to walk the line, & one thing I learned a lot from him is patience. He was the most patient man I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was cool as the breeze & never complained.
Grandpa taught me a lot of the same qualities that he had. They were a lot alike, however my Pops side was Pentecostal, & my Moms side was catholic. Grandpa worked hard in factories to send his 3 kids to St. Anthony’s, & he attended their mass religiously no matter what. A lot of times he would walk from Xenia Ave all the way up Bowen Street or St. Nicolas Ave’s hill to get to mass. He was a tough man, & a Korean War Veteran.
Grandma Babs grew up during the Great Depression pretty much raising her 5 siblings due to her mom dying at a young age, & Great Grandpa John always having to take care of the properties that he owned, & rented out. Babs saved everything, sowed patches, glued back together anything that broke. She also babysat my lil brother & me a lot! She did everything she could for my cousins too. She may have had a short fuse sometimes with Grandpa lol, but she was one of the most selfless people I’ve ever seen in my life.
I’m thankful to still have Mammaw aka Miss Kentucky, she showed me a motherly love all throughout my life, & still to this day. I’m sure that her prayers had a lot to do with God’s protection, & blessings. They helped me survive numerous street fights, fights in the bars & clubs I bounced at, getting shot at, really bad car crashes that I literally walked away from without a scratch, & helped me heal from countless times of me getting my heart broken from being with the wrong girls. She’s always prayed for me to find a good Pentecostal girl in church. I’d always tell her I don’t go to church to find girls, I go to church to find Jesus.
Welp I’ve found Him, & I’ll never stop seeking Him, as far as the girl goes she’s going to have to be able to work hard towards a friendship / relationship like my grandparents have each other. I’ll give her the same amount of work if not more. It’s got to be 💯% plus 💯% together.
I want what they had!
Happy Mother’s Day to my Mammaw, Mom Jill Smith McCown my lil sister Danielle Dittmar & Grandma Babs up in Heaven! I love all y’all!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mamas, Baby Mamas, Mammaw’s, Grandmas & the single Dads playing both roles.

Happy Valentine’s Day Y’all…
Im no professional foosball player or anything, but I’m just say’N… trailer swift shouldnt have been his #1 priority with this much on the line. He coudlve caught that winning touchdown. Truth be told Travis Kelce should’ve been more focused on…
