Last night, one of our guys slept in a bed for the first time in months, in his own bed in his own home, for the first time in years. Lots of hard times led up to getting his own apartment, and he showed such fortitude through his homelessness journey. He didn't complain, he didn't ask for sympathy, he didn't waste time being sorry for himself. It wasn't until he found out he was actually getting an apartment that the tears started. "I just can't quit crying," he said happily while he signed the paperwork, as he toured the apartment, when he turned the key in the lock for the first time. Tears of joy and gratitude and relief, and we all cried along with him. Today he was busy setting up house with items from our furniture barn - a nice leather loveseat, a comfy chair, brand new dishes and a fuzzy rug - but ask him what his favorite thing is? That bed. Because all the time he was homeless, sleeping on shelter cots and dumpy sofas and park benches, he dreamed that somehow, someday, he would have a bed all his own again. Now, finally, that dream has come true.
