Sometimes it’s just the people you have with you. Yesterday I hiked the red trail at Mount Tammany. It was tough. My knees weren’t ready. But through empowerment from some clients/friends I made it. Celebrating world narcolepsy day from my bed!

Back in 2013 I was feeling quite awful. I had just battled Lyme disease and thought things should be settling down, but they weren’t. I had severe mood swings, pinpoint head pain, loss of control of my extremities during intense emotion and weight I couldn’t lose despite my best efforts. I was also ALWAYS tired. I felt these things before as a teenager, but back then they tried to say it was depression or mental health related. So naturally I went to a psychiatrist who said “I think you actually have a sleep disorder”. (She had also caught my Lyme when my physician claimed all my ailments were psychosomatic!) Instead of putting me on psych meds she sent me for a sleep study, and that’s when my “ah ha” moment happened! All the really intense stuff I was struggling with was because my body wasn’t getting enough REM or deep sleep! After diagnosis and medication my whole world changed. It’s not perfect and sometimes I still need naps. I hate the meds and wish I could be off of them altogether. But today I can function in my life without losing my ability to walk or use my hands or head when I laugh or cry or yell! Narcolepsy isn’t what you see in Deuce Bigalow. It’s so much different and varies in different people. I do have excessive daytime sleepiness and I never feel fully rested, but it’s better today than it was. And I’m grateful to the community and for all the awareness they’re bringing to this !

Memorial Day always makes me cry. I do not love war, but who does?! I do know that if it wasn’t for those that were willing to sacrifice their lives for mine, I may not be here, able to live the life I live today.

Keep your heart open. 💕

There are so many topics in the news, politics and injustices in the world today. It’s easy to get caught in the rabbit hole of only looking at the negative. And this is NOT A TOXIC POSITIVITY POST... I’m not for dismissing what’s happening.

However, I am acknowledging that we are constantly bombarded with traumatic information at the hands of the media including social media and sometimes we feel the need to retreat from our perspective and keep away from the difficult conversations. And that is ok. Temporarily.

But we must keep talking and “thoughtfully problem solving” () if we want to see change in the world. And we also MUST keep our hearts and ears open to the other side to learn and grow.

🗣 This means stop yelling your perspective at other people.
👂This means practice active listening.
🫁This means breathing and calming yourself down when a topic feels heavy or hard.
🧐This means stop looking for things to be offended by and taking things personally.
🥰This means coming together in love and being willing to learn.

No one has ever changed willingly by being shouted at and disrespected. Sometimes it takes love and the art of non violent communication to help sway someone’s strong belief. I’ve had a few conversations lately where I disagreed with a perspective but I never said “you’re wrong”. I may have suggested that a statement was incorrectly stated, but did not attack the person. Because that is not going to open up a conversation, and only leads to anger and defensiveness.

How are you approaching the hard conversations? Do you need to have them on a public platform or would it serve you better to have them in private? Can you speak your truth without attacking others? What have your experiences been lately? How can you change your position to facilitate more loving dialogue?

Are you teachable? 📚 👩‍🏫

A few years ago someone asked me this question. Of course, I said “YES!” But at that time, I was as stubborn as ever. I knew what I wanted to do (and was willing to do) and my limits and boundaries were like moats around my castle where I was honored as queen 👸 of the know-it-all’s! 🤓

Fast forward to working with hundreds of clients on their own limiting beliefs... and now I know what “being teachable” means.

📌it’s the ability to show up where you might have knowledge and still open to new opinions

📌it’s the willingness to change your mind (and perspective at times)

📌it’s allowing yourself grace when you fail and advice to move further

📌it’s being in the presence of those that have walked the path before you and trusting them to help you along the way

📌it’s also trusting your gut enough to know when YOU are the thing in your way and getting the heck out of it so you can move forward!

Today I took a class with and while I could “do crow pose” before, today, I did it better because I showed up and listened.

Reiki Master ✅

This absolutely amazing soul became a reiki master today and I could not have been prouder. She has truly been on a beautiful journey of self awareness and reflection over the past year and I have been honored to witness it and be her teacher.

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing modality that can assist on a mental, physical, emotional and spiritual level. When becoming a reiki master, you have to dedicate yourself to live and breath the reiki way of life. (See slide 3). You also have to have an intention to use your reiki to help heal others. I trust that will make a wonderful practitioner and teacher herself quite soon. She will be offering individual sessions at my office very soon on Sundays. I’m there Monday through Saturday for sessions and trainings. Let us know if you have any questions!

The Department of Human Services (DHS) today announced the launch of a statewide Support & Referral Helpline staffed by skilled and compassionate staff who will be available 24/7 to assist Pennsylvanians struggling with anxiety and other challenging emotions due to the COVID-19 emergency and refer them to community-based resources that can further help to meet individual needs.

The toll-free, round-the-clock support line is officially operational. The number to call is 1-855-284-2494. For TTY, dial 724-631-5600.

To create and staff the support line, DHS has partnered with the Center for Community Resources (CCR), an experienced regional crisis and call center provider based in Butler County and licensed to provide crisis services.

CCR staff are trained to be accessible, culturally competent, and skilled at assisting individuals with mental illness, intellectual disabilities, co-occurring disorders and other special needs. Staff use the principles of trauma-informed care to listen, assess needs, triage calls, and provide appropriate referral to community resources to children, teens, adults and special populations.

CCR will collaborate with individuals, families, police, emergency medical teams, hospitals, schools, and human service providers on the local level to provide quality care to their community members.
