Cardinal Krajewski celebrates funeral of Italian homeless man 01/26/2021

By Benedetta Capelli
It's another Good Friday: Those were Pope Francis’ words on Sunday at the Angelus, as he spoke of the death of Edwin, the homeless Nigerian killed by the cold in the street. The Pope recalled what St. Gregory the Great said, that on "that day Masses would not be celebrated" precisely because, in the face of the death of a poor person, it was "like Good Friday."Today the community of many brothers and sisters born in the street mourns "Robertino," as they called him. Fortunately, he did not die of the cold and fortunately, in recent times, he had listened to the advice of volunteers, and after many bouts pneumonia, had moved to the “Binario 95” shelter at the Termini train station. It was here he passed away, in warmth and not from indifference, the disease that kills the most.

A closed door
Those who were close to him -- from the Community of Sant'Egidio, to the volunteers of “Natale 365”, to the police inspectors who have their office in the square where he spent part of his life – were present Monday morning at the parish of San Pio X, in the Roman district of Balduina. Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the Pope's almoner, presided over the funeral, concelebrating with Cardinal George Pell; Archbishop Arthur Roche, Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments; and a dozen priests.

Cardinal Krajewski personally chose the passage from the Gospel of Luke, in which Jesus recounts the parable of Lazarus and the rich man, because "Robert always slept in front of a closed door."

Kicking the ball
"He was a cheerful, sunny person, at the lunches we had he made everyone laugh," Cardinal Krajewski recalled. Because of this, he explained, "he was pampered" by those who knew him. Some, in the past, had even paid for a room in some bed and breakfast in the area around the Vatican for him to spend the night and to thank him for his spontaneity. He made people love him; "he donated,” the Community of Sant'Egidio said, “the jerseys of some soccer teams that he kept in his suitcase. Soccer was his passion.”

Millions amass unexpected debts due to funeral costs 01/09/2021

Millions of people have amassed unexpected debts covering the cost of a family member’s funeral.

Research polling 4,000 UK adults found 47 per cent had helped pay for a funeral after a family bereavement, setting them back an average of £2,000 – the equivalent of £49bn across the UK.

For two-fifths of those who have had to lend financial support by paying for funeral costs, it was not something they were prepared for.

As a result, nearly one-fifth had to pay for it using a credit card, while nearly one in 10 had taken out payday loans.

The research, commissioned by British Seniors Insurance Agency as part of their Funeral Costs report, also found 62 per cent had to take money from their own savings, while more than one-tenth had to borrow money from other family and friends.

A range of new services have been introduced by the Co-op to help mourners unable to attend funerals during lockdown.

The government has asked funeral organisers to keep the number of mourners at services as low as possible to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

Co-op says it has introduced cortege services that can pass by loved ones' favourite places or pass the family home to allow those isolating and not able to attend funerals a chance to pay their last respects.

The firm added it has also become the first national funeral provider to introduce a direct burial service, which does not have an attended service.

And with flowers in short supply, Co-op says it will team up with suppliers to ensure families and friends have greater access to floral tributes.

Announcing the new services, Sam Tyrer, managing director for Co-op Funeralcare said: “We are arranging funerals in a way we would never have thought possible just weeks ago so that bereaved families can continue to honour their loved ones in a unique and beautiful way and say their best possible goodbyes.

Hundreds turned out for memorial service in Birmingham with tragic consequences

Five mourners who attended a mass funeral wake died after reportedly catching coronavirus there, a Birmingham City Council boss has revealed.

Hundreds of people turned out for the illegal memorial service in the city earlier this year, the authority’s enforcement chief Paul Lankester suggested.

“It was almost a street party type thing to celebrate the life of someone,” he told a virtual meeting of mosque leaders. “We've heard that five people who attended that got Covid and passed away.”

He did not disclose who the wake was for or where precisely it took place.

Key things to remember when coping with the death of a loved one
Co-op Funeralcare is reminding people that it's okay not to be okay when you're grieving

Losing someone close to you is something we’ll all experience - and in a year like no other, many of us have found ourselves in that position sooner than we’d expected.

Grief is something we have no control over and with the constant uncertainty of the current world around us, many are finding it harder to process.

That said, as a nation, we’ve traditionally struggled to talk openly about death. But for much of 2020, the topic that we tend to brush under the carpet has dominated headlines and in many ways, brought the conversation more into the open.

Co-op Funeralcare’s recent report, A Nation in Mourning, has revealed that 9.7 million UK mourners have been able to attend a loved one’s funeral and that has hindered many people’s ability to process their grief.

So if you are struggling with this very thing, Co-op Funeralcare has compiled a number of points to consider.

Powys crematorium plan unveiled by county councillor

Plans for a crematorium and green burial site in Powys are being put out for public consultation.

Cremations currently take place outside Powys in places such as Hereford, Aberystwyth, Shrewsbury and Cwmbran.

Conservative county councillor Gareth Pugh has proposed a 34-acre (14-hectare) site in Caersws.

A spokesman for Mr Pugh's company, Powys Crematorium Ltd, said he would take no part in the council's decision over the scheme.

The facilities at Ael-y-Bryn, north of the B4568, would also include a green burial site and a garden of remembrance, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

'Open and accessible'
A design and access statement from the company says: "The scheme has... been designed to ensure an attractive and safe both public and private space with an open and accessible public facing realm, securing natural surveillance by design with clear and open aspects.

"The result is a design which relates clearly with its landscape setting and respects and enhances the open character of the site."

People are invited to have their say on the proposals in a pre-planning consultation until 4 December.

A detailed planning application would be submitted to Powys County Council at a later date.

Pressure builds on PSNI chief Byrne to explain 'deal' with Sinn Fein on Bobby Storey funeral

Pressure has been building on the PSNI chief constable to explain what deal - if any - was brokered with Sinn Fein ahead of the funeral for veteran IRA man Bobby Storey.

Asked about what arrangements were put in place with the party, Simon Byrne dodged the question saying it would be inappropriate to comment given the ongoing investigation into the matter. He said he would be better placed to comment in a few weeks time.

Mr Byrne also said his officers did not attempt to intervene to disperse large crowds at the funeral for fear of "widespread violence and disorder". Sinn Fein MLA Gerry Kelly rejected the suggestion.

The chief constable, in an interview with the BBC, defended how the funeral was handled in west Belfast.

Thousands lined the streets despite Northern Ireland being in lockdown during the first wave of coronavirus. Among them were senior Sinn Fein figures. Their attendance sparked a political crisis.
