Yes, ADHD can run in families, suggesting a genetic component to the condition.
The genes you inherit from your parents can significantly affect your risk of developing ADHD. Those with ADHD parents, siblings, or close relatives who have it are more likely to have ADHD as well.
However, environmental factors also play a role in the development of ADHD. While ADHD shows a strong genetic link, this doesn’t automatically mean that your child will inherit ADHD.

The connection between sleep and health is real. Following a consistent sleep schedule is important for overall health and wellness in the long run.
Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day, including weekends. It’s important for your body to have a regular sleeping schedule.
Set a relaxing bedtime routine, such as listening to calming music, reading a book or taking a warm bath.
Finish eating meals 2-3 hours before bedtime.
Try to limit how many caffeinated products you consume in the afternoon.

Friends and loved ones can make a big difference. In 2020, only 20% of adults received any mental health treatment in the past year, which included 10% who received counseling or therapy from a professional. Friends and family can be important influences to help someone get the treatment and services they need by:
- Helping them access mental health services
- Learning and sharing facts about mental health, especially if you hear something that isn't true
- Refusing to define them by their diagnosis or using labels such as "crazy", instead use person-first language
