Cleveland Metroparks
BIG Disappointment!

While fishing at the East 55th Street Marina, near the Cleveland Metroparks restaurant, one of my fishing buddies, Herb W. and I were approached by two Cleveland Metroparks’ employees. The restaurant manager, who claimed to be the owner of the facility and dock hand. They insisted that we could not fish within 300 feet of the dock.”

We explained that Lake Erie waters are public space, that no one owns the water, and there is no signage stating that we were not allowed to fish within 300 feet of the dock.

They responded that a sign prohibiting people from fishing within 300 feet of the dock is forthcoming. Hmmmm! We requested that they call the Coast Guard so we could resolve the matter immediately. At that point, they walked away, and we continued to fish.

Subsequently, I spoke with Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Cuyahoga County Wildlife Officer, Michael G. about this incident and asked if there were any areas within the East 55th Street Marina where boaters are prohibited from fishing. He said, “No, you had every right to fish all the waters at the East 55th Street Marina. Nothing is off limits. By fishing there, you broke no laws.”

I’m in contact with The Cleveland Metroparks executive staff: Brian Zimmerman, The Cleveland Metroparks CEO, [email protected] and Joseph Roszak, COO, [email protected] requesting a response as to whether a 300-foot restriction exists around its docks. As well, is a sign forthcoming stating that fishing is not allowed in the area. If not, I would like an explanation for their employees’ actions.

More to come…Dennis

So proud!
Won 3rd place at the (Ohio Bass Federation) (OBF), Region 3 fishing tournament held at the Ohio River in the Co-Angler division. Co-Anglers are non-boat owners who fish from the back of the boater’s boat. OBF is Ohio's largest organized bass fishing federation. There are six regions throughout the state. Most fun of all was hanging out for four days with my friends from my two bass clubs, (North Coast Bass Anglers Association) and (Cool Running).

This week, we went fishing with Hermanas Entering Reality (H.E.R.), from Max S. Hayes Career and Technical High School!

H.E.R. is designed to educate young ladies in self-esteem, etiquette, life skills, career exploration, job readiness skills, and socio-emotional learning skills.

We were happy to have them out in Oberlin with us, and it looked like we found some natural anglers!

Attended the Cool Running Bass Club’s yearly awards banquet earlier this week in Willoughby, Ohio. They recognized the top anglers of 2023.

How I wound up at this event is a story worth sharing. A couple years ago, my fishing club, North Coast Bass Anglers Association of Cleveland, Ohio, a predominately black club, and Cool Running, an all-white club, each operating independently of one another for close to three decades teamed up thanks to our shared passion for fishing.

In a world often divided by boundaries, our common goals of catching fish, becoming better anglers and passion for being outdoors has forged a deep connection between individuals who might otherwise never connect. At our meetings, tournaments, and social gatherings we laugh, share, hug, talk “smack,” respectfully and honestly.

The banquet included a delicious dinner, adult beverages, handing out awards, a recap of 2023 season, and what’s in store this year. Ray Gray, a member of Cool Running and North Coast, was recognized as angler of the year. I picked up a plaque for winning one tournament.

As our evening ended, I realized that the “catch of the day” was the emerging bond between Cool Running and North Coast.
I encourage anyone reading this to go fishing with family and friends, and discover the unique connection that comes from fishing.

Good fishing, DJK
