Roasted Corn Chowder
Soup. Soup. Soup.
Every year I hear the debate as to whether one should drink hot beverages or cold ones to cool down on hot days. But I never hear that kind of talk when it comes to soup weather; and now is soup weather. Cold mornings, chilly afternoons, the perfect time for a spoon full of goodness.
This week we have a roasted corn chowder served with bits of roasted red peppers and chopped cilantro. Yum! I have to admit that I steal a cup every day for myself. Well, steal may not be the right word since I actually own the soup, but you catch my drift. We might have enough to make it to Friday but I am doubtful, so may I suggest dropping in and getting yourself a cup to go. I am pretty sure it will make your day.
Next Up: Butternut squash soup with carrots and orange. Haha!
Have a great hump day.

You Have Got To Love Mondays
It's that time again, the last Monday of the month. The day where Kat and I like to show our appreciation and thank you for all of your support by buying you a FREE cup of coffee. It really is one of our favorite days. I mean, we do need to make a living and your constant support has allowed us to do just that. My waistline is evidence for sure.
In other news: Soup!
I have a fresh Corn Chowder for you today topped with roasted red bell peppers and cilantro. I oven roasted the corn and caramelized the onions to bring out the best of their flavors. I even toasted some diced carrots and celery to balance it out. Stop in for a cup.
Well, time for me to get off to work and make the magic happen. Hope to see you today.
Thanks,
Tommy Judt

The Best Part Of Autumn!
There is a crispness in the air. Fresh and cool it seems to need a little extra effort to take it in and yet it doesn't. The sky is a little rosier, like Paris in springtime. The late beginnings of morning closely followed by the early onset of night. Like a protective shroud trying to shield us from the upcoming winter.
This weekend I spent amongst the cedars and pine. Had soup and broke bread with close friends. My thoughts so relaxed I said things I never would share with anyone else. A comfort seemingly afforded to me on the rarest of occasions. Sleep came easily, serenaded by the melodic snoring of this man's best friend. I awoke Sunday with a peaceful mind, one not felt with as regular a notation as in the past.
Weekends are meant for just such things.
See you for coffee.

Half Way There
Morning Morning Morning!
We got a funny little start to the week with Indigenous Peoples Day this Monday. That made Tuesday some people's Monday and now Wednesday is some people's Tuesday/Wednesday but still everybody else's Wednesday. Okay!
Clear as mud. Doesn't matter, we are all halfway there. Halfway to the weekend. As for me, just half awake. The coffee is starting to take hold, the fog is lifting, my brain is clearing and a semblance of ambition is peering around the corners of my mind. I can do this. I got this. I can make today happen. I'd love to back to bed now.
Wednesdays are good days. Studies from the 60's show that Wednesdays are the most productive days. Mondays we are just getting our bearings again after the weekend. Tuesday we are a little more organized. Wednesdays we are up to speed and hitting on all cylinders. Thursday we begin thinking about the weekend. Friday, well Friday is, I would argue, really part of the weekend so not so much work gets done.
Today though, today is Hump Day. Middle of the week. Most productive day. The day we earn our next raise or promotion. Arguably the most important day of the week to our professional lives. Wow, I didn't really think about how heavy a thought that would be until I wrote it out. Today is the most important day of your professional life.
I suggest coffee and a bite. We got you. We are up to speed at The Line Coffee. We have 4 sausages now: Louisiana Hot link, Beef Bratwurst, Italian Sausage and a Polish Sausage all wrapped in flaky croissant dough. We have quiches, egg bites, our infamous Breakfast Basket and of course our ever poplar Ham & Swiss croissant and Spinach Kale.
Anyways, wishing you all the best on this most important day. Let us know how we can help.
With gratitude,
Tommy Judt

This Is How We Do It
What lovely Fall weather we had this weekend. My house is cool, my dog is happy. With weather like this we are able to go for longer walks in the morning. Great for both of us to be out and about as much as possible. The only little bummer was when I met a friend at Point Isabel, by the Costco in Richmond, to watch the Blue Angels fly but, the cloud cover was too low and they cancelled the event. Still we had a nice time sipping wine and catching up.
The cool weather also put me in mind to begin my fall yard cleanup. I started filling up the truck and later this week I will make it to the dump. Feels good when the yard is a little tidier. I have a pretty big yard and my dog loves to run up and down barking to make sure the squirrels stay on the top of the fence and the power line. I fear what will happen if they ever dare set one tiny paw on the ground.
I wish I could say that I have a grand lush lawn but I am not so motivated to keep it watered all year round. During the rainy months, and in the Spring, the lawn that survives does push up and I do love the large lush look of it all. This year I think that I will do something different. During the first rain, I think that I will spread a bunch of pollinator seeds so that come next Spring the bees in the neighborhood will have a plentiful food source.
You see my fruit trees and tomatoes did not come in well last year. I can only assume it was a lack of bees. Hopefully this next year I will have a yard that is chock full of those little buzzers. I sure would like to have so much fruit that I needed to can some. Wouldn't that be nice.
Well, it's Monday and I have to get ready to make you your coffee. Do stop in and say hi!
Thanks again,
Tommy Judt

Saturdays In The Coffee Shop!
Saturdays and Doggies
Last Saturday was great! We got to see some of our favorite neighbors who haven't had a chance to come in for awhile and of course their puppy dog buddies too. Stephanie and I are looking forward to this coming Saturday as well. The pace is a little slower, which can be nice, and it feels like there is a little more time to visit
Our hours are a little different for Saturday. We are open from 7 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. We wanted to be open so you could grab a leisurely coffee before you head out on your day and still give us time to enjoy our Saturday as well. I am hopeful these hours will be a win for us both.
Curious thought to share. So I purchased the larger bakery case in order to offer more savory options. So now we have quiches along with our egg bites and breakfast baskets. WE rotate between mushroom, squash and spinach galette/croissants. Our ever popular spinach kale croissant still dominates the favorites list while the variety of sausage rolls keep flying out of our oven.
For those of you who haven't tried it yet, our lovely Black Forest ham and Swiss cheese croissant with a drop of Dijon mustard and sweet honey is our take on the classic French Croque Monsieur. Light and satisfying at the same time.
Anyways, the bakery case will be full today and tomorrow too and we look forward to seeing you.
Always thankful,
Tommy Judt

Hot Hot Hot!
I would have died for an ice cream yesterday, it was so hot. So today, I am going to have one . . . or two. Scoops that is, in my coffee. It's affogato time. Affogato al café. (Drowned in coffee.) Yup, today you can either have an espresso affogato, maybe with a little caramel on top. Or if you are really feeling too toasty, a Nitro Cold Brew Affogato. Kind of like a coffee float! OMG, my mouth is watering already. Can you imagine? Two little scoops of delicious vanilla ice cream topped with a double shot of our rich chocolaty Guatemalan espresso? Personally I cannot wait to try our super tasty Nitro Cold Brew as a float!
Either way, we've got a couple new things to help cool you down today.
Quiche is back in the house and of course our super tasty egg bites wrapped in thin sliced potatoes, in case you are watching your gluten intake. The fan favorites are turning out to be the Italian Sausage and the Louisiana hot link though. What a toasty, tasty lunch those two make.
Traditionalists will enjoy our chocolate croissants as well as our homemade coffee cake. Complimented by the ever popular lemon poppy seed muffin and almond marzipan croissant. (I really need to stop writing about food, it is making me so hungry.)
Anyways, hope that your week is starting off well and I look forward to seeing you soon.
Gratefully,
Tommy Judt

My Favorite Day Of The Month!
It has been quite a month with all the up and down weather. And I hear that there is more heat coming! What the heck? Some way to start a Monday.
How about . . . I give you a FREE cup of coffee today? Yup that's right, it is the last Monday of the month and the day I choose to say thank you for all of your support. Kat and I are happy to give you a cup of coffee in the hopes that it will make your Monday just a little bit better.
As for me? I am nursing my 3 a.m. coffee and getting myself ready to bake off some fresh goodies for you to have for breakfast. Just a reminder that we have savory pastries as well to give you the energy to get through your shift. And some sweet ones too.
Looking forward to seeing when you stop in.

Of Saturdays for . . . coffee!
Yes, it is time for us to add a few more hours to our schedule. We have a tremendous new employee Stephanie who will be manning the store on Saturdays for us. She has tons of experience in my hometown of Vallejo working for the very roaster whose coffee we enjoy - Moschetti.
Stephanie is a baker as well, specializing in cakes. It is my hope that we can get her to try her hand at making us something special in the next couple of weeks, once she is settled in.
Our hours on Saturday will be from 7 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Just enough time to get a morning coffee, croissant, quiche or sausage roll then out and about on your day.
The weather is still pleasant so enjoy your weekend, take a little time outside for a stroll, grab a coffee, and relax. We've got breakfast covered.
Hope to see you soon,

Hump Day!
Okay, we can call it coffee day. Hot coffee, cold coffee, coffee to get you through today and the week. A sip to nudge and to bump you through the day. A cup of tasty, bittersweet brew to get you over the hump, as it were.
For me it's the aroma of a freshly brewed pot of coffee. Something about that rich chocolatey scent that piques my interest and helps to pry open my sleeping eyes. I, personally, am a drip coffee man. A cup of drip coffee with a bit of sugar and I am in heaven. I tend to sip too. I start a cup and it will last me awhile as I nurse it along throughout the morning. Here at work, I pour short cups so it doesn't go cold on me. Occasionally I will steam it up if it has been sitting a bit.
Now cold brew, I have recently taken to cold brew. I am very pleased with the Guatemalan cold brew that we serve. Rich and smooth. Very refreshing. Some people take it with a bit of cream or a dash of vanilla. Anyway you want it is a great choice for hot days in need of caffeine.
Anyway, we got you covered for Wednesday. A cup of coffee and a Ham & Cheese Croissant for breakfast. That's who we are.
See you soon.
Thanks,
Tommy Judt

The Best Place To Start Your Monday!
Mondays are for Making-It-Happen!
Its just another Maniac Monday but you got this. One more time to wake up and step up. I used to dread Monday mornings but sometime when I was working on movie sets I came to enjoy them. Working with all those amazing people, heling to contribute a little to our cinematic culture. It was fun. Hours were long but it was fun.
The coffee shop is a little like that too. Mondays I get to see all of you, ask about your weekend and share a bit of a laugh or cry; as the case may be. Either way its great to catch up. And what a perfect excuse to stop in . . . Coffee. We've got coffee, and fresh baked goods. It feels like we have the largest selection of savory baked goods in Berkeley, and our sweet pastries sell out everyday. I specifically selected the little brown pastry envelopes we use so it is super easy to sip your coffee and eat your breakfast, or lunch, or snack while walking back to work.
That being said, I look forward to saying Good Morning and wishing you a fantastic week.
Happy Monday!
With gratitude,
Tommy Judt

Early In The Morning
Good Morning!
We made it anther week. As for me, my coffee is slowly kicking, my eyes peeling open, and my dog still snoring beside me. Oh the life of a dog. Hey, weird fact, I just saw a news piece where a zoo had painted dogs in an exhibit and was calling them Pandas. I guess if you have never really seen one before. A Panda that is. Without coffee I think I would have bought it.
You may have noticed the weather changing a bit. Just an FYI, this is officially the last weekend of summer. Although sweater weather has already started as I have begun to notice various knits of wool walk in for a drop. Always a smart look I say.
Whether its fall sweater or summer shorts you wear today we are always glad to have you drop in and share your weekend plans. The Brown Sugar latte is becoming increasingly popular almost as much as the Green Eyed Lady made with white chocolate and pistachio syrup. I don't know, I think it is kind of fun making and trying the different lattes we have. What's your favorite? What would you like to try?
Me, I am going to try on this weekend. I think it will be a sweater like fit. I'm feeling more cozy already. Have a great weekend.
With gratitude,
Tommy Judt

Or Vice Versa?
So the origin story for coffee goes something like this. Kaldi, a young goat herder, noticed that his goats stayed up all night after eating some particular berries. He told local monks at a monastery, who made the very first coffee beverage. I like to think this all happened on a Monday.
I mean, my Sunday morning coffee was delicious. Rich, warm and sweet just how I like it. But something about the Sunday-ness of it was more relaxing than 'up and at 'em Atom Ant!' Which, to me, describes Monday morning coffee. Full on, bring back my superhuman powers please, I have to drive to work. Just to drive to work.
Thankfully, I had the foresight to open a coffee shop so that I could have another cup of coffee; fresh and hot. Well, yes, I suppose that you too could come have a cup of coffee at my coffee shop, seeing that it is Monday after all. I like to share.
The winds of time are blowing as Fall sets upon us once again. I will share that in my personal life this summer was a little hard when it came to losing friends. Being a man of a certain age I have come to expect the ravages of time as seen on the faces of my contemporaries . . . and in the mirror too. This year witnessed the passing of a few seminal characters in my life. Even though our contact wasn't daily, a quiet spot remains that once was filled. It's crazy, the thoughts, a good cup of coffee will stir up. Quiet on Sunday, charged on Monday.
Seasons change, life moves forward. Thank goodness coffee is predictable.
Be well my friends,
Tommy Judt

Is Better Wrapped In A Croissant!
I can almost remember the first time my mother open a can of Poppin Fresh Dough, pulled out a little biscuit round, wrapped a hot dog in it, set it in the oven then served it to me with ketchup and pickle relish. (I had a fierce sweet tooth back then which hasn't left me.) I thought my mom was the coolest ever.
Now a traditional sausage roll is wrapped in puff pastry. I find puff pastry to be a little too flaky at times but just love our croissant dough. Buttery and delicate yet ample enough to contain a midday meal. You see, we like to stuff our sausage rolls with things like mustard, cheese and onions. Specifically, the Louisiana Hot Link has stone ground mustard, red onion, spicy pickle and fresh Chevre (goat) cheese. Rich, sweet and tangy all at the same time. The Beef Bratwurst has stone ground mustard, red onion, a slice of jalapeno and Manchego cheese. Our newest offering is the Italian Sausage with caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, Manchego cheese and topped with our own marinara sauce.
Look, I think each one is a winner, so if you are looking for something satisfying to get you through the rest of your day, I suggest trying one . . . or two if you are really feeling hungry.
Have a great weekend.
With gratitude,
Tommy Judt

But Not At The Line Coffee!
We love our dog days at The Line Coffee. Some our best customers are furry and four legged. I know that we here all get a special joy out of saying hello to our funny, furry friends. The wagging tails, the shivering excitement, the overwhelming desire to come behind the counter and clean up crumbs?
To celebrate this love of canines, Kathya has taken to photographing all of our dog friends and pinning their pictures to our bulletin board. It gives me a smile every time I walk in and see their little mutt faces staring back at me. check it out the next time you are in.
So please, bring your dog to work and drop in for a visit. We have treats for them and for you! Here's to happy dogs.

Minus The Champagne
I mean, that would be nice. Champagne and oysters. Right!?
No, we don't do the traditional New Orleans style of brunch but I was thinking the other day, as I looked at our bakery case, 'Brunch, breakfast and lunch.' That's what we do. We have some fun egg dishes. Some great sausage rolls. And of course quite a few tasty pastries. All that and a cup of Joe! Well that's brunch.
One of the challenges to keeping the door open at The Line Coffee is to maintain a menu that is interesting, varied and tasty. We have worked hard to serve items that are more than just a sweet treat to go with your coffee break. The decision was made to make sure you had choices that were both original and satisfying. I hope we have met the challenge.
Fairly soon we will have to begin to rethink our offerings. Until then the Louisiana Hot Link is calling your name? Or maybe is the Spinach Kale croissant? How about the Blueberry Cheese croissant? Me? I am a traditional butter croissant man myself. Any way you go, please know that we work hard to make your break time enjoyable and satisfying. I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
With gratitude,
Tommy Judt

Kathya and Olivia have seized control. Cool. They have begun asserting their newfound authority by creating some amazing new lattes for you to try.
Brown Sugar Latte - flavored with a simple syrup made of brown sugar and spices.
Snickerdoodle Latte - flavored with a date syrup and nutmeg.
OMG! I don't know which one to try first! Please I need your help.
Today and all of next week, Kathya and Olivia will be giving away samples of both of these lattes. Please, please, please, I need your help. Would you please try them and let them know which one you like best? I will never hear the end of it unless you weigh in with your opinion. Rumor has it there are even more changes headed my way in the future.

Just A Little Thank You!
I just wanted to take a minute to say thank you for all of your support. The Line Coffee have been open now for 2 and a half years and I could not have done it without your constant support. One cup at a time you came in, shared a story, ordered a coffee and a bite, and helped my dream to grow.
Now I have three amazing people helping me to bring you great coffee and baked goods. Olivia the baker, recently graduated from Laney College Pastry Program. She has such a nice way with pastry and I am so lucky to have their help. Kathya, who has her degree from SF state in Hospitality, is keeping our little shop organized and carrying on taking care of our most prized guests, the puppy dogs who come in. They have created the Doggie Wall of Fame. Take a look today when you drop in. I have to give a big shout out to Armando who comes in later in the afternoon to do the dishes and clean up. He never complains, always works fast and makes sure that we are all set up for the next day.
But without you, none of us would be doing what we love most; and the best way I can think of to thank you is to buy you a FREE Cup Of Coffee. Yup, all day today our drip coffee is FREE. Just drop on by, or order it online by clicking the button below, and get a FREE Cup of House Coffee.

Enjoying The Long Weekend
What is it about an extra day off that seems so delicious? Is it the sleeping in? Is it the extra time to catch up on chores? Is it that society frees us from the guilt of responsibility for an extra day that makes it feel so decadent?
To be honest, I really don't know and don't much care. For me it is the extra sleeping in that makes it so amazing. So this coming Monday we will be closed for Labor Day; coming back early Tuesday morning with FREE coffee day. Yup, just a little heads up, FREE coffee day on Tuesday the 3rd. Look for our email on Tuesday for more details.
Thank you all again for the amazing support you have given us over the last two and a half years. I am especially thankful for the opportunity to be a little creative and to have the chance to visit with you all when you can drop by for a cup. Please have an enjoyable and safe weekend and I look forward to seeing you next Tuesday.

Move In Day Has Come & Gone
The City of Berkeley, when there are major traffic days like football games, puts up digital signs to warn everyone of the impending crush of cars and people. Well, they also did it for Move In day at the campus dorms. Hundreds of Freshmen show up for their first home-away-from-home with mom and dad in tow. New Ikea furniture. Perhaps a trip to the thrift store for a few pots and pans to cook their meals. And boxes . . . all the cardboard boxes. The recycle container in my building has overflowed for the last two weeks with labels from Wayfair and such. At least the are getting reused somehow.
Hibiscus Tea - Nitro Style
We have a new lovely and refreshing Nitro Hibiscus Tea on tap. Cold brewed overnight with Star Anise and Cinnamon this spicy, refreshing iced tea is amazing on warm days. I find it slakes my thirst and tantalizes my taste buds. I prefer adding simple syrup to add a bit of sweetness, but I do realize that some of you enjoy a cold, bitter brew. Either way the Nitro Hibiscus is bound to please.
Save Time & Order Ahead
I just refreshed our Online Ordering Website. Cleaned up some of the older, out of date items and placed a few new ones in. Everything is separated into two categories DRINKS or FOOD. Berkeley Starts To Buzz
Dorm Move In Day
Those of you who live in Berkeley are familiar with Move In Day. A sea of freshmen and their families descend upon the University dorms, unpack their belongings, and settle in to their new forever-for-a-year homes. There is a palpable buzz around town with the sharp influx of bodies busy to begin settling in. Whole Foods sees a bump in sales as does t he florist across the street. I get the opportunity to meet parents from across the country as they get their morning coffees and pastries. It is an exciting time for the University and the City as well.
Coffee & Croissants
Most of you know this story. Sometimes I think the only reason I opened a coffee shop was to be able to have coffee and croissants every morning. A very happy coincidence. Something about a warm croissant with a fresh cup of hot coffee . . . yum. The truth is we have quite a few pastry choices now. Definitely worth working my way through the menu. Every morning we bake off a specific number. I consider us a micro-bakery, our production size limited. We will push the limits a little the next few day but I promise, if you get here early enough, we will have what you want to start your week off. Like I said, nothing better than a fresh croissant with coffee.
The Best Part
The best part of being on this email list is getting to push the button below. You can order, right now, and schedule to pick it up on your way to work. Most importantly, it saves you time waiting in line. With my memory of how busy we were on these few days, the last two years, ordering ahead is my recommendation. See! I am always thinking of you.
Have a great start tot he week and see you soon.

Two Of My Favorite Things
Does Anyone Else Hear Mary Poppins In Their Head?
A Long Work Week
I am not sure what it is but sometimes it seems like the work weeks just gets longer and longer. I thought time was supposed to move quickly the older you got. Any-hoo, I am so glad Friday is upon us again. With my first cup of coffee in hand, my vision is starting to clear. The head throbbing is subsiding and the feeling of normalcy is taking hold again.
Oh! Something to share. I had a great bit of BBQ and a whiskey with a friend of mine yesterday at a new place on San Pablo Avenue near University: Heads and Tails Barbeque. What a nice, shiny new place it is. The most and least I can say about the place is that Rick, and his partner Drew, have figured out how to smoke a piece of meat. I have had their Brisket Sandwich, BBQ'd Half Chicken and their Pork Tacos. I can't remember the last time I have had so much fun getting my hands messy from eating.
Rick and Drew have also put a lot of effort into their back bar and generously poured us tasting of Uncle Earnest Bourbon Whiskey. A touch hot for my taste but oh so smooth. My advice is to drop on by, grab some BBQ and sit for awhile. Heads and Tails Barbecue 2121 San Pablo Avenue Berkeley CA. (https://headsandtailsbarbecue.com/)
When you drop in, ask for Rick and tell him Tom from The Line Coffee sent you.
Italian Sausages
Always trying to add something new to the menu, Olivia and I are working on a new Pig-In-A-Blanket for you to try: Italian Sausage with caramelized onions, roasted peppers and marinated mozzarella. Dang, it is so good with the sweet peppers, creamy mozzarella and the freshness of the fennel coming through from the sausage. I am happy for another tasty addition to our menu. Stop on by and try it out.
Online Ordering
A few folks have mentioned having a little challenge with using our online ordering system. I know it is not perfect and the reason I continue with it is because it works so seamlessly with my cash register system. When you order it goes right into the system, unlike those third party applications. This helps me maintain accurate inventory counts of the baked goods we are offering that day. It also connects you directly to your Loyalty Points so that you can take advantage of them even on your Online Orders. Lastly, the orders are easy for us to track and to let you know by text when your order is ready.
Thanks for sticking it out with us. We really do want to make it easy for you.

Traditionally Non-Traditional
I say non-traditional because I was raised in a household that was trained in, and espoused Western medicine. My parents, a nurse and a pharmacist, met a UCSF in the late 40's. Our family dinner table conversations included discussions of new medications and hospital ICU stories. All this grounded my implicit bias which presented as disbelief when Sara first said that she could help with my arthritis. How could sticking me with pins like a voodoo doll help with joint pain and degradation?
Well, my ignorance took the front seat on that ride. but, Sara supported me at the coffee shop and with respect needing to be mutual, I felt internally pushed to give her the benefit of the doubt. I am so glad I did.
My hands. My hands are how I entered the world as an adult. Starting off life as an auto mechanic, then working in restaurants and movie sets, onto being a contractor and now a (self described) coffee magnate. All requiring the use of my hands. Hands as hammers mostly. Sore all of the time. Throbbing when I fall asleep and soon after the first sips of coffee kick in.
While I take anti-inflammatory medication it wasn't until Sara examined and treated me that I found a measurable amount of relief. The second time in her office, she noticed my tense shoulders. Going to work again, she was able to treat, and immediately relax my shoulders. The wave of relief I experienced is hard to describe.
Sara has been a good friend to The Line and, to me, a great practitioner of Oriental Medicine. Thankyou Sara

All Things New
Olivia is at it again with new items almost every day now. Her latest test treat is a Summer Vegetable Galette. So tasty and so seasonal. Combine that with the Figgy Chocolate bite and the Almond Buttery Olivia-o's and . . .well . . there are some fun things to try. I really don't know what she will come up with next but I'm excited to find out!
Save Time & Order Ahead
Thanks to all of you who are using our Online Ordering System. It helps us to give you the service and quality we want you to have, now that school is coming back. The great majority of or items are listed in alphabetical order. Hopefully this will make it easier for you to locate the items you desire.
Many of our customers who use this service tell us how easy it is and how much time it save them during the break from the office. To be honest, I chose this location so that you might have a chance to stretch your legs and get yourself a great cup of coffee; and I am glad it's working out that way.
If you haven't had the chance to try it out yet, just click the button below and tell us what you want. It will be ready and waiting for you when you drop in. No lines, no waiting.
