Asha Tea House

Yesterday was Sharon’s last day at Asha! It was an unexpectedly busy day at SF due to the Union Square tulip giveaway, but it was also a fitting send off for one of our most compassionate, dedicated and tireless leaders. Sharon joined our team almost 7 years ago and has helped us build, manage and nurture our teams across all 3 locations. It’s hard to believe that our 1st kid (2nd pic!) was still growing in Diana’s stomach when Sharon first came into our lives. We will miss her at Asha but wish her the best of luck with her next adventure! 🥰

Over a decade ago, David left his engineering job, hopped on a plane to Taiwan, and returned with a 40lb bag of . Our vision for Asha soon emerged: a tea house that served premium yet accessible and drinks with , a tea-centric gathering place for friends and families, and an inclusive business where employees would be proud to work.

We had no idea how to achieve this—2011 was a time when food start-ups, social media and how-tos weren’t yet a thing—so we Googled our way along every step. 💪🏻

When we quietly opened our doors at the corner of Berkeley’s University & Shattuck a year later, customers had no idea what to expect. We were a tea house that offered familiar drinks like , but had the look and feel of a third-wave coffee shop. We had a unique collection of , but also served hand-crafted drinks. We made our fruit purée and almost everything else from scratch, even condensed milk! Word of mouth grew, especially after we created the now ubiquitous layered , and Asha soon became a Bay Area destination for authentic, high-quality tea.

Today, as we celebrate turning 10, our hearts are full of . We are grateful to the community for welcoming our with open arms, and to our who spread the word to friends, families and colleagues when we opened in in 2015 and in in 2021. We had actually planned on giving away delicious treats as a to our amazing community, but our baker fell ill at the last minute—yet another curveball from the . 🥲

We are also thankful for our amazing . They have been showing up when half the world hasn’t, and have been weathering all of the twists and turns of our “new normal” with unwavering dedication. Our friend Natalie made delicious for our teams at each store, and customized each one to reflect the personality of each location. It was an unexpected and special touch, and only goes to show that we truly have the most amazing and supportive community.

We have a sign! Shout out to the crew for matching our grey Pantone so perfectly and rolling with the wabi-sabi outline of our Asha logo text. This is our first push-out illuminated sign—so excited about how it turned out!

Here’s our bounty from the latest fruit to come into season— 🍊! Our team literally squeezes every last drop out of locally-grown blood oranges to create a tart yet sweet gimlet.
