Approaching Backbends for Scoliosis
with Deborah Wolk
Sunday, August 6 | 1:00 - 3:00 pm
$45 (Online and In-Person)

Backbends can stretch the muscles of the heart, lift the chest and stimulate a depressed nervous system. But for those of us with scoliosis, backbends can jam into the lower back where there is concavity, overstimulate a distracted mind and exploit hypermobility leading to injury.

In this workshop, Deborah will offer a sequence using props and awareness of one's asymmetries in the spine as well as in the arms and legs which will encourage balanced strength and centered actions. Students will be able to enjoy the length and lift offered by spinal extension which is so needed in the scoliotic body without fear of pain, compression or injury.

Deborah will also offer modifications and alternatives to those with spinal fusion and disc herniation so anyone with scoliosis can participate.

1 year yoga asana experience is recommended for this workshop.

Yoga for Digestion
with Deborah Wolk
Saturday, August 5 | 2:00 - 4:30 pm
$55

The digestive tract runs through the center of the body and is considered external to the body—as food passes through, we absorb nutrients and more. (or don’t!)

Gut tube development begins very early (at 3 weeks). This tube and associated organs support the skeletal structure, contributing to the patterning of the skeletal and muscular systems.

As a result, musculoskeletal patterns are a major contributing factor to healthy digestion—for instance, a misaligned spine with a great deal of kyphosis (exaggerated thoracic curve) will create a lot of weight and compression on the organs making digestion more difficult. Yoga asana helps to align and repattern the body for better digestion. In addition, the nervous system also contributes to these patterns and the practice of mindful asana and pranayama can address these types of imbalances as well.

There are some wise suggestions for eating times and amounts offered by the yogic texts that should also be considered to maintain a healthy metabolism.

In this workshop, Deborah will present a yoga asana and pranayama sequence to address different types of digestive issues, observe where and how musculoskeletal imbalances may be affecting students’ digestion and she will offer suggestions for improved eating habits.

This special event is dedicated to the women of Iran!

In this special class you will be guided through a meditation and a restorative practice followed by a Persian classical music performance.
———————————————————-
Passion is paramount, but passion refined and sublimated so that longing and desire break through ordinary habituated consciousness to point to something unlimited, such as an overwhelming sense of the beyond.

The traditional poetry and music of Iran aim to create a threshold space, a zone of mystery; a psycho-emotional terrain of suffering, melancholy, death and loss, but also of authentic joy, ecstasy, and hope.

In the Persian tradition, music is not only for pleasure, but has a transformative purpose. Sound is meant to effect a change in the listener’s consciousness, to bring them into a spiritual state (hāl).
-Darius Sepehri

Sara has played academically since the age of 11 and performed all over the world. Her primary instrument is the barbat, a healing instrument of ancient Persia and the great-great-grandmother of the guitar.

Sara Saberi was trained as a yoga teacher in India and has been teaching yoga since 2015. She is near completion of the Advanced Study program at The Yoga Room Berkeley.

The Midline and the Plumb Line: Finding Your Center
with Deborah Wolk
Sunday, August 7
noon-2:00 pm
$40

The sirsasana must be like: Samamkaya sirogrivam dharayam acalam sthirah (B.G. 6.13) —the crown of the head, the middle of the throat, the perineum, the middle of the knees, ankles and feet should be in a plumb line. Then this asana is considered as a perfect asana. This way all the asana have to be practised to be in line to the core to experience the infinite that is within.
—BKS Iyengar: Astadala Yogamala—Vol.7 pg 124
In this workshop we will learn to see, sense and work with the landmark locations that define the center of the body. In the various texts on asana and pranayama, the Iyengars describe the midline as a line bisecting any \particular place in the body where one puts their focus. The plumb line in both yoga and anatomy is seen as the center line from the crown of the head to the space between the feet. Very often these lines are used to define alignment. But are these midlines aligned? Are the midlines and the plumb line our center or is there another center not defined by such linear markers? How do we perceive these lines and do our perceptions align with their reality? And lastly, most importantly, how do we really see balance and how does it help us?
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Join Deborah Wolk, Founder of Samamkaya Yoga Back Care & Scoliosis Collective from NYC. She will present new ways of seeing symmetry and asymmetry in an exploration of centering oneself and learning to see the body from a new perspective. Meticulous instructions, props and hands on adjustments (with permission) will be used during asana practice which may include standing poses, forward bends, twists, backward extensions, restorative and pranayama. (6 months previous yoga experience required)

Getting to Know Your Amazing Psoas Muscle
with Cator Schachoy
Saturday, July 23
2:00-5:00 pm
$50 (online and in-person)

The psoas is integral to sitting, standing, walking, moving… all of our daily activities. It’s involved in both forward and backward bending, connects upper and lower bodies, and plays a special role in the pelvis, back, ribs, and breathing. Starting at the lower ribs and ending at the top of the thigh, psoas covers a lot of terrain. We could say it’s like a road that starts in the plains, crosses over the mountains, desert, hills… and ends by the sea. Intriguingly, psoas is influenced by how we feel. When we feel threatened, psoas contracts. When we are at ease, psoas relaxes and lengthens. And no two psoas are alike – even within your own body.

Given the complexity of this muscle, it’s worthwhile to take a little time to get to know it. Class will include in depth investigation of this essential muscle through experiential anatomy, yoga poses, pranayama, breath awareness. Open to all.
