We love paddling at BORP's Aquatic Park, but we also love exploring! Last Monday a group of us headed to Los Gatos to check out the one-year-old accessible kayak launch at Lake Vasona. The location features two "adaptive kayaks" - sit inside tandem kayaks with optional outriggers and lightweight paddles. They also have an abundance of tandem sit-on-top kayaks, a few single sit insides, as well as SUPs and paddle boats available to rent. We loved the sunny gorgeous park location, the friendly helpful staff, and the accessible dock. Their adaptive launch has a long ramped access, is very spacious, and has both a lift and the ADA Compliant Transfer Platform. We hope to be back! You can reserve and rent at Lake Vasona online: https://www.lgsrecreation.org/vasona-boating/

A few BORP staff and a board member got to test drive an ATV, or in ADA speak, an OPDMD (other power-driven mobility device) at Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands. WOW, this beast was awesome.

The device is called, Terrain Hopper, https://www.terrainhopperusa.com and there is a move by some advocates to get parks to have these available to loan to access more trails. And yes, they are very expensive.

Are you looking for an accessible park in Northern California that best suits your needs?

Look no further! The article below highlights the work done by BORP affiliates Bonnie Lewkowicz and Lori Gray, who have dedicated themselves to helping create accessible trails in Northern California and making them known to the public!

Bonnie Lewkowicz has been working as a disability activist for over 40 years! Beginning as an intern for BORP in the 80’s, she eventually left and started Access Northern California, “An organization focused on digitally cataloging the accessibility features of trails across the Bay Area. Access Northern California merged with BORP in 2016…it’s just as important to look for what would make a trail inaccessible as what makes it accessible”

Lori Gray has also been working in the disability activist space for over 40 years! Lori is the adventures and outings program manager for BORP. She organizes, plans, and leads outings for participants in BORP’s programs. Her role is to find accessible parks and trails and plan the activities. “Gray, visually impaired herself, often searches for recreational activities where there are options for tactile or auditory experiences.”
