Meet Hilary, a break leader for our San Diego service trip. ⭐️
When asked about her Alternative Breaks experience she shared, “Alt Breaks has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and become more outspoken about what I want and need. I have begun to trust myself and believe that I have the ability to be a person who can help others out. I also started to realize how important it is to work with others and learn from one another to accomplish our goals.”

Meet Gilberto, a break leader for the Puerto Rico service trip. In Gilberto’s own words, “My time in Alternative Breaks as a participant at first and now as a leader has motivated me to continue to cultivate Cultural Humility before and when entering a space or community. Cultural Humility is "a lifelong commitment to critical self-reflection and learning for understanding, advocacy, and change-making."(Tervalon, M. & Murray-Garcia, J.) From experience, I know that many volunteer and leadership opportunities can easily become extractive and short lived, but I have learned that with this approach, social justice work can become even more impactful. I will continue to carry this approach in my future endeavors.”

We’re excited to feature Kathia Osuna, a break leader for the Central Valley trip. In Kathia’s words, “Alternative Break's transformed my approach to service in unexpected ways. I had a lot of volunteer experience before joining the program, but seeing how mindful they are in their approach to community service really worked to help further ground me in the work we were doing. This program has helped me grow as a leader through their restorative justice trainings and has given me a space to raise Central Valley issues to the broader Berkeley community.”
