We are trying to help a rescue group in Costa Rica assist migrants from Venezuela who are bringing their pets along in this heartbreaking journey from South America to the US.

Here's Omar and Kira's story. Please help if you can
Proyectos Liseth Monge is one of the rescue groups in Costa Rica coordinating help for these people and their pets.

Omar and his beloved dog Kira are fleeing Venezuela like many others who are leaving the country because of the current unstable economic and political situation in that country.

The odyssey has taken them through different countries, often traveling by foot, including the perilous journey through the Darien Gap, a lawless land between Colombia and Panama in the middle of the jungle with no roads, venomous snakes, and full of bandits. It takes at least 3 days to cross the Darien and many turn back, get injured or loose their lives. Omar and Kira made it to Costa Rica safely in the last few days but had to sleep on the street since the migrant shelters will not allow animals.

His situation is not out of the ordinary, many immigrants who take this journey don’t want to leave their beloved pets behind and bring them along with them in this perilous journey. In Costa Rica, animal rescue groups are helping these animals with basic care and are asking the Venezuelan migrants like Omar, to leave their pets in Costa Rica since they will not be able to get across the US Border with them and they will have no choice but to leave them behind in Mexico.

We are trying to create a network of people in the US to serve as foster families for the pet while they wait for their humans to arrive and apply for asylum in the US and get settled, and then reunite them with their beloved animals.

We are looking for an es**rt for Kira to fly from Costa Rica, like a tourist going back home to Los Angeles, or to the San Francisco Bay Area, since Omar is looking to stay in Los Angeles. We are also looking for funds to cover Kira’s travel permits, vaccination and airfare. She will stay in a dog shelter in Costa Rica until she is ready to travel.

A foster family in California will take care of her until Omar gets granted asylum and is able to settle in the US.

Kira and Omar only have each other and they could certainly use any help they can get as they look for a better future together. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We will keep you posted on Omar and Kira’s situation!!
